What’s happening in this A League of their Own movie clip?
At the end of the baseball match, Kit (Lori Petty) gets a second chance when she comes to bat with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Under immense pressure she gets a hit, and ignoring the third base coach's sign to stop, scores the winning run by knocking her sister (Geena Davis from Thelma & Louise) over at the plate and dislodging the ball from Dottie's hand.

What’s the A League of their Own movie about?
During World War II when all the men are fighting the war, most of the jobs that were left vacant because of their absence were filled in by women. The owners of the baseball teams, not wanting baseball to be dormant indefinitely, decide to form teams with women. So scouts are sent all over the country to find women players. One of the scouts, passes through Oregon and finds a woman named Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis from Thelma & Louise and Stuart Little), who is incredible. He approaches her and asks her to try out but she's not interested. However, her sister, Kit (Lori Petty) who wants to get out of Oregon, offers to go. But he agrees only if she can get her sister to go. When they try out, they're chosen and are on the same team. Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks from Big, Forrest Gump and Philadelphia), a former player, who's now a drunk, is the team manager. But he doesn't feel as if it's a real job so he drinks and is not exactly doing his job. So Dottie steps up. After a few months when it appears the girls are not garnering any attention, the league is facing closure till Dottie does something that grabs attention. And it isn't long Dottie is the star of the team and Kit feels like she's living in her shadow.

Dottie got hit very hard in an earlier scene and she still held on to the ball. While it's quite convincing, I find it very unlikely that she would unintentionally drop it, especially when it mattered the most; she did it for her sister, but she also forced Kit to earn it. If that isn't love on display, I don't know what is - I love this movie!

Yeah, and I noticed a couple of new things. 1. In the beginning of the film when they were playing back home, Kit doesn't attempt to hit the ball on the third row, it just goes straight into the catcher's mit . Here she takes a long look at Dotti just before (making her slightly nervous), and does attempt it. 2. She didn't have a Team backing her up (encouraging her) back at home. Here she does. So the stakes are much higher, and there's way more pressure, but at least she's part of Team who encouraged her - way more than the Peaches did.

Please, believing that Dottie intentionally chose to drop the ball makes the whole movie worse. There is also evidence to support that she DIDN'T drop it voluntarily; she even goes out of her way to tell Ellen Sue that Kit can't hack it against high fast ones. No, Dottie wanted her team to win as they had earned it. She most likely wanted Kit to learn her lesson the hard way; tough love is quite common between competitive siblings. And it works much better plotwise if this is Kit's victory when Dottie is at her A game, anything else is a great disservice to her and her skills. I grant that it would be so easy to have Dottie actively fail for the sake of her little sister, but that's such a cop out Hollywood ending and from what I understand, Dottie herself is actually impressed by Kit finally overcoming her most difficult, personal obstacle; not just the high fast ball... but also her, Dottie, her big sister, who was always better.

@@Egobyte83 There's a detail which one could argue contradicts that - she dropped it from her non-gloved hand; why would she unnecessarily switch between hands? Either way, I think we can agree it's a blessing and a curse that it's not made clear what is right - a blessing because we the audience can determine it for ourselves, and a curse for being so controversial as a result. But whatever the truth is, I don't think it really takes anything away from this scene or the movie - it's still fantastic.

I think this scene shows that Dottie really understands her sister. Earlier in the movie Kit says that she likes the high balls. I think Dottie realizes that Kit could never stand just being second best. By telling the pitcher to throw high balls she's giving Kit what she always really wanted, a chance to be truly great...

As I'm english, I don't really understand baseball, but for some reason I really love this film. The cast are terrific, especially Tom Hanks and Geena Davis, even Madonna was great. Near the end when the girls meet up again, and they are older, and that Madonna song starts, I get really emotional, it's a real gut punch.

In order to understand baseball, you must know the rules, then watch a few games - live in a stadium is far superior to watching on television. The strategies are unique to the game, and one comes to understand all the strategies that are in play. The twitch re-actions of the players when a ball is in play, the speed and strength employed, comprise the amazingly athletic part of the game, but such things as, how to pitch to one batter vs another, the ball control of a first-rate pitcher, how the fielders align for a particular batter, or plan to control the runners once they are on base, are the things of strategy and beauty.

It is a much overlooked climax to a film which is about more than it appears. The music, the timing, the details that are gone in an instant that are payoffs from earlier on like Evelyn getting her throw to the relay woman dead right then Jimmy losing himself and truly committing to the game and the moment that the ball drops there is the most amazing switch from excitement disappointed to joy at Kit being relieved of a burden and triumphing unexpectedly.

I absolutely loved volleyball but was only just pretty good no matter how hard I practiced. Why would I deserve to win over someone who is naturally better? Even if my childhood had more adversity I don't "deserve" to win. You could argue that kids deserve to be treated fairly by parents or deserve to go to bed with a full stomach. @@scootergeorge9576 She didn't drop it intentionally. Why bother coming back to play in game 7 at all? Remember, she left the team when her husband came home, only to turn around and go back in time for game 7. On top of that, Hinson drove in Rockford's two runs with two outs in the top half of the inning. Why not just let Kit strike her out and end the game there, if she was planning to lose? Just before Kit's at-bat, Hinson makes a catch going into the Rockford dugout. Why not drop the ball there? All of this happens BEFORE Hinson tells Ellen "High Fastballs." There is NO WAY Hinson could have known how Kit's bat would unfold. She looks shocked after Kit hits the ball to deep right. If the fielder is playing back (as Jimmy said to before the game) it may be caught or certainly gotten to quicker. Hinson also has no way of knowing that Kit would blow through the 3rd base coach's stop sign. Why not simply drop the relay throw before the collision? I’d say she didn’t drop it on purpose. It’s also extremely patronizing the notion that kit could only win or succeed because her older sister let her, Sometimes you have to give the player their due, kit was determined and as to Dottie nobody’s perfect. Dottie just came back after being Away and she was surprised kit ran through the stop sign so she was off balance a bit when she got the throw. Even the best of them make mistakes. Plus Dottie taking a dive is disrespectful for her teammates. Plus she got the go ahead hit the previous inning. If she wanted kit to win just strike out. Dottie was all in to win and on that day kit got the best of her. That’s why they play the game. So I say rubbish to those who say Dottie goofed it on purpose.

If Dottie really would have been willing to let her teammates down (which i don't think she would do) just to give Kit her moment in the sun, she wouldn't have told Ellen Sue Kit's weakness regarding high fast balls. Keeping her mouth shut about that would have been easier than dropping the ball on purpose. I think it was killing her to see her little sister so upset, but she knew that "letting" her win would be no victory at all. And Dottie showed herself over and over again to be a very committed person...she may not have been as invested in the League as the other women, but she seemed to be the type who believed you do the very best you can at every job you take on no matter what. I believe Dottie's intention was for Kit to hit the ball and allow the game to tie up, that's all. You can see the look of panic in Dottie's face when Kit doesn't stop at 3rd at 1:47. Now she has more to deal with. Do I let her win or do I play for my team? @@SearchIndex No that was earlier in the film. Watch the beginning.. Dottie makes it clear to let the younger one win. The ending was bringing the story full circle. The rivalry was completely in her sisters head. She was negative from the get-go. Always blaming her parents for sharing stories about Dottie and how she was treated like trash. Then a scout comes looking for Dottie and Kit tries to make it all about her again. When it was Dottie's moment. Dottie was right.. she got her sister on the train.. that was all. The rest was up to Kit. And when the moment came at the end of the film.. win or lose.. Kit "won" by getting a hit from the high pitch.. but Dottie also gave her that "win" by dropping the ball so she could experience a life without her. It still shocks me that people think she didn't drop the ball on purpose. The entire film foreshadowed it from the first couple scenes.

Such a great ending. It leaves doubt in the viewers mind as to whether Dottie dropped the ball on purpose, but one has to assume she did not because she was purposely trying to strike kit out. Also, if Dottie had held onto the ball, it wasn't "game over", it would have been tied 2-2 and gone to extra innings, but Kit would have looked foolish for not staying on 3rd base and ignoring her coach. FYI, no baseball player would ever do that (ignore a coach and run to home). That would never happen.

Thinking that Dottie dropped the ball on purpose is looking down on Kit and belittling the progress she made. I am convinced Dottie did NOT dropped the ball on purpose. If she did so, it would be letting her sister win, like you do with a kid. But for an equal, it's insulting. This scene is about Dottie finally treating her sister like an equal, and so going out with everything she had against her. Why else would she have told the pitcher about the high fast balls ? She saw her sister, not like a kid she had to protect, but like a fullfledged baseball player she had to defeat. So, dropping the ball and letting her win would have been utterly condescending. And to think so is utterly condescending too. Kit won this game, fair and square. Don't take that away from the character. That's what allowed the two sisters to get reunited.

People suggest Dottie dropped it on purpose. If she really wanted to 'help' Kit win the game, she wouldn't have told Ellen Sue to throw her pitches she struck out on all day long any other game. And the look she shot her before she want down in position to catch was that of 'If you think I'm doing you any favors, forget it.', even though Kit wasn't even looking at her. She was being ruthless. I think she had every intention of hanging on to the ball, and this was Kit finally being unintimidated, and getting a victory over her big sister. Dottie was smiling because she was damn proud of her sister stepping up like that and legitimately besting her for the first time. If you look at their exchange between strike two and Kit hitting the ball, you can tell Kit knew Dottie told her what to throw, Dottie was looking right back like 'Yeah, what are you going to do about it?', and Kit's look changed from nerves to determination. You actually see the roles reversed when she rounds third. It's the first time you see Dottie look completely unsure, and Kit has a stone cold look of 'I'm going right through you.'
