Mike, I'm sorry for the loss of the calf. As you were pulling that calf with the straps, I caught myself leaning back in my chair mentally trying to help you. I was raised in a rural area and spent my summer days as a teen bucking bales, cutting pigs and anything else the farmer needed help with using some young strong teen boys. Thank you for sharing the reality of life raising livestock, the good , the bad and everything in between. I think most people don't have a clue in what it takes both manually, financially and emotionally. As a side note; I am waiting on a 1/2 beef I purchased from one of my local farmers, should be ready in a couple weeks. Everyone out there should be doing the same thing, LETS SUPPORT OUR FARMERS AND RANCHERS!!!!

Mike, hold you're head high; you did one hell of a job! You immediately picked up on the problem, did a dynamite job getting the pregnant cow into the barn; and did everything humanely possible to help the cow deliver the calf. I also was very impressed with how, at the very last second once you got her into the chute you made an incredible move; switching immediately from leading with you're ❤️ to leading with you're brain 🧠! You were emotionally determined, when approaching the cow in the rear to save that calves life. But, at the last second you STOPPED; head took the driver's seat, heart sat in the back seat. You put the safety bar up to protect both you & the cow. Wow! This is what a true professional does. It's easy, in this type situation to put blind faith into an animal; thinking they trust you & thinking they know you'll do right by them. WRONG. This is exactly where & how livestock accidents occur. You instantly prioritized SAFETY; it worked. Once again Mike, you didn't miss a beat; from beginning to end, so yeah I was truly impressed watching you do what you did. As you know only too well, this is all part of cattle ranching. You have a great touch with all of you're animals, don't ever change that. Questions: 1. Can you ultrasound her before breeding her again to see if she has any internal problems? 2. Do you give the cow antibiotics right after losing a calf? 3. Is Oxytocin used on cattle? I know it's used for dogs to not only help induce labor; but to also deliver the pups more easily. I've bred, raised, trained, shown & imported German Shepherds for years. I spent a month in Germany; showing, training & buying a few dogs before returning home. I can't say enough about the breed! As far as cows go, I have 2 good friends who have farms near by. One has 150 Jerseys (have to keep a very close eye on those Jersey bulls 🐂😡🐂!!!) and the other has a herd of 40 which consists of mostly Simmental & a few Black Angus. Love going to both farms each week! Nothing like drinking raw Jersey milk; BEST,,,,,,,🤗. Have any of you seen, "Cattle First Documentary"; on KZfaq? Wow! Yeah, it was that good! Educational, very family oriented, historical, entertaining, fun, motivational,,,,,,,Yup, I'd have to grade it as being an A+ all the way around! One of the many things I found of interest was how the cows calve throughout the month of May; vs January - April with countless farms across the country. They obviously claim, that by doing so; success rates are dramatically higher. Makes perfect sense.

You can tell by his demeanor that his cows are not just his business ,this was personal for him, and anybody who watches this video and sees the dedication that he has to these cows should never criticize this man ,or the type of the business this is yes I did say cattle business but it’s not only just a business to this man

We lost plenty of calves on our dairy farm. Everyone we lost was a hit in our paycheck and our heart. It's not easy to have a loss. Take care and god bless.

I know it's hard losing a calf. We've lost a few. We lost a heifer & the calf couple weeks ago. Making a long story short she wondered off and we didn't find her back on the hill the next morning. Here in S. E. Ohio it's hilly and it was just in a spot that was hard to find. I sure momma cow will be alright. Good educational vid. for those that don't really know what goes on on a ranch. Sorry about the calf. Part of farming. Just was thinking, a lot of times when a cow is in the crush and I'm using the jack the cow goes down when the calf is out a little, just you put that bar at the back of the cow, if the cow goes down and the calf is out even its legs that bar will be in the way. I bred my goats to kid in April because I was taking a trip in March. came home from the trip to find one of my goats in labor. She had already miscarried one little goat when I found her. With the help of my neighbor who raises cattle a second was delivered. Both too small to survive. His first time delivering goats but he has helped many cows. I have the best neighbor in the world. So sorry that it ended the way it did for you. My heart goes out to you.

Sorry Mike for the loss of the calf. I know you look at things differently then I do. I have 5 pet cows. A birth is a glorious thing. Of all 3 calf births here on my property , I've missed all 3. It’s always a thousand times harder to pull a when the calf isn’t alive, which I think most folk who’ve never been involved in all this don’t perhaps understand. Always a shame - it’s just a crap start to a day for you both, no doubt. I really hope YT doesn’t pull this down on you; this sort of experience is vital and critical for learning, especially for farmers who’re just starting out and perhaps don’t have someone more experienced to learn from. Those last few weeks are so vital to healthy calves - I’m still playing catch-up on your videos, but fingers and toes firmly crossed that this is a one-off for that cow and the rest of your 2022 season goes smoothly from here on out.

So sorry for the loss! Unfortunately, farming of any animals has it's tragedy's. Anyone who has watched your video's knows how much you care for your animals, and how much passion you have for what you do. When that passion and compassion is gone, it is time to move on.

You did a great job assisting your cow. I worked with a vet for many years and helped pull calves on several occasions. Some joyful and others not.

Know the feeling mike, had a cow abort the calf late in the term as well and had to try and pull it, really rough situation as long as mother makes it through thats a plus in my mind in that situation.

I think the stress on the family with the drought has passed on to the heard as well the land couldn't provide this year all the farming in of hay may have came into play as well, I'm praying for better outcomes with the other moms this is a hard blow to you all be dealt with so late in season you guys have done what you could now it's up to the powers that be! 🇨🇦

The calf looks as though it never had a chance but when we see that during a hard pull delivery, the focus becomes saving that Mom. You did everything right on! I am dumbfounded when KZfaq, and other online sites, dont allow natural things like animal births to be shown. I often find that non-ranching folks just dont understand the natural processes anymore. There's no APP on your phone, no Google search or KZfaq video that truly gets you through the life & death things that we deal with on a ranch. Bottom line? You do your very best. So sorry Mike that you had to start your day this way. Never a good time. But you do always learn from it.

You did everything you could. Having come from a dairy farm, my dad always said survival of the fittest. There was probably a defect with the calf (heart, etc) that caused mom to abort and this was best. Thankfully you got to her in time.

Between my own experiences and those I've known during my horse and cow years (God I miss it, but I'm disabled now), there were of course bad experiences. Even one where my former farrier stopped breeding afterwards from the heartbreak. But such strong efforts to help come from love and passion for our animals and jobs, even if it doesn't work out. ❤

Mike so sorry for the loss of the baby I know how hard you work to save them when you can but there was nothing you could do for this one but at least you were able to save the mother this time, because I know you had in the back of your mind while you were working on this mother and and baby you were thinking about the mother and baby you just lost a little while ago under basically the same circumstances going into labor way too early and you lost that cow and baby and that had to be so hard on you especially with all the restructuring yall have just done and you're down to a smaller herd so every cow and calf really count so to lose both and mother cow and her calf really hurt and now to lose another calf but at least this time you were able to save the cow so count your blessings where you can and praise God that you caught this one in time and saved her. Just know you're doing everything right and you're an excellent farmer and you take care of your all of your animals the best you can. Yall are an amazing family. God bless yall
