so i tried... You ever see someone smile and pledge to yourself that you will make sure they never lose it? Such was hers. Felt like I was drawn her smile even though I had no knowledge of her and got to know her just this morning. I did not expect I’d have a thing for girls who don’t mind getting their hands dirty. It’s just so fascinating to watch. At least to me it was. She didn’t seem to mind it at all. I was tempted to tie her hair back for her but I’d be asking too much from a girl I just met. I was just thankful to her for letting me help with her pottery. It was a regular day; I was walking to class when I was called by the professor from the pottery department. I followed him to his classroom where he asked for my assistance with hands…? There she was by the window. Her luscious hair almost covering her face was what I first noticed. Her overall small size was what came second. ‘Can you help her? She’s working on this long vase and needs some help with the detailing’ ‘Yeah, she needs help with the hands as hers are small’ the girl sitting to her right spoke up. At that she looked to the side defensibly and opened her mouth as if to say something but said nothing when the professor cleared his throat. I inhaled at once when her eyes met mine. Man, I must’ve underestimated my lung capacity. Yeah it’s just my marvelous lung capacity and no, I did not ogle at her beautiful face at all. I crouched low to look at her piece and it was quite massive for her little hands. I also could not help but take in her extra big facial features that stood out more due to incredibly small size. Oh no. Think she caught me staring. Just when I became this way. But she wordlessly handed over her vase to me and showed me where to place my hands. She did not seem to wear perfume, and instead smelled like baby oil. I must be turning into a backslider. Yeah I should just focus and study her later. She surely wouldn’t like me if I ruined her hard work. After about an hour it was done but my hands were covered in clay. I could not attend class in this state. I look at the time and realize class must be over by now and any minute now… ‘Aristotle?’ ‘I’m dead’ I say before hopping out of the classroom through the window sill and running away. I’m sure I must have been imagining it but I thought I saw her laughing out of amusement from the corner of my eye as I took off. Yeah, I must have been daydreaming. A pixie like her wouldn’t have noticed a no body like me. Being an art student, she must like artistic men too. I was a sports major and pretty all over the place. Would I be able to catch her eye if I switched majors? Okay, now I am thinking of such blasphemy. I must be losing my mind. I slow down as I am running out of breath. I felt pretty safe here as I had reached the other side of the campus now. Far away from the sports block. I approach the water cooler to wash my hands. I realize my hands were pretty much rigid now from running in the wind, running like my life depended on it. To be fair, it did; our professor made us run 10 laps around the field for being even 5 minutes late to class. I could not seem to open the tap. After at least half an hour of struggling, I had decided to give up and leave. That’s when she appeared from behind me before opening the tap for me wordlessly. I felt the need to say something. Oh my god, what do people talk about with their crush? College third year but look at me acting like a school boy in front of my crush. But she saved me; ‘Aristotle huh?’ ‘Yeah, Mum thought it’d suit me’ ‘Did she expect you to grow up to be someone who does well academically?’ I thought I head my neck bones crack as I turned to her ‘How did you..? She named me so praying I’d grow up to be good at Mathematics’ She smiled. ‘Was she disappointed?’ ‘At? Oh… nah, she said she could see me achieving great things this way too. What about you? When did you discover art was your thing?’ ‘I’ve liked earthy things ever since I was a little girl’ ‘Littler than now?’ I apologized after her half glaring at me We talked every day from then on between classes before I walked back to my block. It was the beginning of something that I hoped would not end too soon. I often came by and helped with her work whenever I had time off and she would sit around and watch me play. Often when our hands brushed while our outdoor walks and between working with the clay I was tempted to hold it and not let go, to not let them get cold but I held myself back; consent matters and perhaps, I feared that I was just a friend to her and maybe unlike me, she did not wish to change it. Then one day, I finally mustered up the courage… ‘Hey, so do you…’ She waited patiently as I fumbled about for the right words. ‘Could you see yourself in the future with a very umm..unartsy guy?’ She had a blank face on. ‘I mean could you see yourself spending the rest of your life with a footballer?’ I waited this time. I watched as her facial expression changed from blankness to one where she’s pondering before her chocolate brown eyes lit up and her beautiful lips curved into the most beautiful smile I had ever seen throughout my life. She walked me to my block this time before I insisted on walking her back until she reluctantly left for class. I realized everyone was staring at me. I realized that I probably had the stupidest smile on my face at that exact moment but I did not care. I get to be me and still like her and have her reciprocate my feelings?
