It wasn't horribly officiated either until that last minute, the refs were letting them play. But that call is unacceptable, I am sorry. As an Eagles fan, I wanted the 2 seed. But not like this.

There was like one pass interference call that got missed in favor of the cowboys and a bunch of missed calls in favor of the lions. The refs were good this game. The lineman should have reported.

@rachelleintexas338 that’s a dumb argument. First of all, the second attempt was from seven yards out due to a penalty that shouldn’t have been called to begin with. More than that, though, saying that it’s their fault they lost because they missed the next attempts is the same as saying that the refs should have called back Lamb’s touchdown and said “okay, it only counts if you do it again.” They could have missed 100 subsequent attempts and it wouldn’t matter: you only have to be able to execute a scoring play once for it to count. The Lions did that and it didn’t count. Whatever happens after that, they still got screwed.

This ending is so suspicious and infuriating as a Lions fan. Like Mitchell Schwartz said on twitter: If the refs are to be believed that it was Skipper who reported eligible and not Decker, then the penalty should have been illegal formation thrown right at the start of the play. The fact the penalty wasn't thrown for illegal formation means Decker was reported as eligible. Literally makes it seem like they just called a penalty just because they felt like it.

If I understand it right, that flag was thrown. There were at least two flags on screen, and according to the ref’s post conference there were two penalties on the play, one being illegal formation for a covered receiver. I saw some post commentary analyze that he believes the ref is telling Dallas that 70 is eligible, and that potentially the three linemen coming up to ref made him pick the wrong one. Detroit seemed very earnest and assured they did it correctly, and I’m incline to believe them. The post game commentators said it’s the players responsibility that the ref knows and that maybe they didn’t get the signaled acknowledgement (in part by being discreet by not giving away the play). As I understand it, the ref is supposed to let the defense know who is eligible, and part of why 68 was so open is because no one on Dallas thought he was. But if I’m wrong feel free to correct me. Regardless, even as a Cowboys fan I can agree the ref messed up pretty bad (and they missed pass interference a couple plays before) and it sucks when it come down to finicky penalties.

I was talking to my mom about this play (we’re both Seahawks fans) and she said that she does believe that Decker did communicate with the refs about their eligibility. But what happened was that in as most of all the adrenaline in the moment, the refs didn’t comprehend what the Lions said. And after watching the clips and interviews, I believe the refs completely screwed over the Lions. I feel so bad for them and that should’ve been a good conversion.

There was an illegal formation, so not only did they screw over the lions, but the refs made themselves look worse by not calling it. The refs wouldn't let the Cowboys lose on Jimmy's special day though, obviously.

I wouldn’t say it’s a good conversion still. Refs screwed the lions but completing a pass to an uncovered receiver after the wrong guy was called eligible doesn’t mean they would’ve made it had the play been properly called.

The refs have been the worst I've ever seen this year honestly. In every game I've watched, they miss easy calls, call phantom calls and seem to be making up calls at times. Which has been a roller coaster of emotions, confusion and starting to believe the conspiracies of the NFL knows who is going to win this year 😐

The only reason I wouldn't blame Campbell for going for it all three times is that because both teams are going to go to the playoffs, neither team in the grand scheme of things needs this game if the goal is to simply make the playoffs. So, by going for 2 points, Lions do not risk a needless injury in the OT and to say the least wear and tear on their players. He had been aggressive all night. One thing that is funny is that earlier on Saturday, the Arizona Bowl between Wyoming and Toledo had an "illegal touching" by a lineman for a touchdown. First rule a touchdown, then on second review they took the score off, then an additional review added penalty for an "illegal touching". NFL Script writers saw what college bowl games were doing and copied their homework. Lazy writing in my opinion.

That's true for most NFL teams, to be honest. Especially with how the refs seem to have forgotten what "Holding" is in most cases even when it's as egregious as Micah Parsons (different game from a couple weeks ago) getting held around the neck by one player and the waist by another on his way to the QB for what should have been a sack, complete with a snapshot of said moment going viral on social media. The tape don't lie. But the refs sure love to.

I think it would be borderline neglecting their fiduciary duty (as a business) to not fix games somewhat. This game didn't hurt Detroit. In fact, it made them look like they might have a path to playing good defense. Dallas got a win they needed. This makes both teams look like contenders right before the postseason. It's perfect what it did for ticket sales/intrigue.

It isn’t that the refs have a beef with the Lions, per se. It’s just that Jerry made sure the opponent wasn’t going to win on Jimmy night, no matter what it took.

I liked the call by MCDC to go for 2 no matter what, Lions lost in Seattle in OT without the offense getting the ball because the defense couldn't stop them in OT and the Cowboys were 7-0 at home with 40+ points/game in those games at the time of the decision. He doesn't want to lose on a coin flip, he wants to put his team in a position to get the win without relying on the 50/50 of an OT coin flip. I love Dan "The Gamble" Campbell going for it even earlier in the game in spite of not getting it and losing by less than those 3 points left on the field. His job is to put players into position to win the game and going for it there does that better than hoping a coin flip goes his way.

Their defense was playing well all night though. Hell, Goff threw a pick with 2:20 left and they still got the ball back...I'm sure they'd be fired up for OT since forcing it in that situation means Lions momentum, I doubt Cowboys get more than a FG as they'd probably be shook... but then again it was a strange game overall

Longtime Lions fan here. The Pistons comment made me LOL! The Lions didn't lose due to that 2 point call. So, yeah, it appears that the Refs blew it as not only did Decker say that he reported and Skipper said that he didn't, and the Refs say the opposite happened and that Skipper then was in illegal alignment, but Dan Campbell revealed that he had informed the Refs that IF they were to EVER go for 2 in that game that Decker would be reporting as eligible. But for me the problem is that in the first quarter when the Lions got near the goal line that they went for it instead of kicking a FG even though their drive pretty much had sputtered out. The next time they got down there they continually moved forward so going for it made sense, and they got it. But I've long said that if they're inside the 10 and moving to go for it but if they're basically sputtering, stagnant, or moving backwards to just kick it. Had they made a FG back then, they'd most likely have won as they'd have been up by 2 after the TD instead of being down by 1 and they'd just kick an XP to go up by 3 with only 23 seconds left for The Cowboys to do anything. The Refs appear to have screwed them at the end and lied about it, but going for the TD instead of the FG early on was the real cost to that game.

The Refs did nothing wrong. The Lions lined up wrong and they could have called an illegal formation penalty on it. There were 2 penalties on the play. Each one was going to be called. There was nothing wrong with the Refs on that play. The Lions were wrong with how they lined up to begin with. That's coaching. Also, they missed clear and blatant holding again on the first play of the drive on Micah Parsons. Complete holding and illegal hands to the face on the same play. If you want to start anything about the refs, start with the missed penalties again for holding.

Also if I am not mistaken, that illegal Formation doesn't become a problem if the refs listen to #68 instead of turning around. The refs messed up big time here during this game and their incompetence is ruining a lot of games this season. I know because my team (Eagles) have benefitted from the incompetence of these refs, and so too have the Cowboys. This needs to change.

The main problem I have with how bad the refs have been this year is that nothing will change or be done. Knowing we are going to suffer through this again next year just sucks. I know they are just humans and arent perfect, i expect a few bad calls a year, but good lord its been every week and they have been high stakes, game changing penalties. Maybe players need more discipline, maybe rules need to change... idk.

Gosh, a ton of whiplash in those final two minutes. It hurt seeing the first 2pt conversion attempt get called back, and when the Lions couldn't get it done the first two tries the third try just felt risky as hell. Though I do think Parsons’ doesn’t get a lot of holding calls (not necessarily this game, I only saw the ending; and not just him, Miles Garrett and other really good DE as well). But agree with the original comment. Everything after the last interception was terrible on our end. Sorry the game ended that way.

The refs were even briefed before the game of the play and formation. Skipper was to go over to be a tackle on the other side shifting the other tackle to guard etc making Decker the "legal" TE on the play. Goff even made Decker declare as eligible. There needs to be an investigation done or else refs wont be allowed in Detroit or risk their health

I’m not saying it wasn’t a bad call, because I do think the ref messed up (even as a Cowboys fan), but if I understand it correctly three linemen were talking to the ref, and only one can report. The ref reports the wrong one or doesn’t hear Decker as reporting. The ref then has to tell the defense, and reports 70 as eligible (part of why 68 isn’t guarded is because they don’t know he’s a receiver, and the defense is supposed to know as I understand it). The postgame commentary said onus is on the player to make sure the ref knows your eligible and get a signal back, but it seems there was some miscommunication, potentially by the multiple lineman talking or by Decker trying to be discreet and not give away the play. But ideally the ref wouldn’t screw it up in the first place, and either way it sucks the game ends that way.
