Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled his entire life until he entered college. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and bands from before 2000.
John (the guy in the dark on the right) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave (on the left), on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play for him, but tends to take lyrics literally, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.
We did not write nor do we own the Copyright for the song used in this Educational Video. This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

Love your choice John for a new listener of PG rich songs catalogue. This song is a great start to appreciate the great musicianship, the beautiful production of a more accessible song of him. Eventually, you should go to Biko. A fantastic powerful song.

If I recall correctly, the melt effect was the result of messing with a Polaroid picture as it was developing.

From a news story in 2015: "Andre 3000, we love the outfits, but you're just wrong. The Polaroid company has issued a statement in response to the refrain of OutKast's infectiously catchy hit song "Hey Ya!" - you definitely should NOT "shake it like a Polaroid picture." "Shaking or waving can actually damage the image," the company writes on its Web site in answer to a consumer's question about the song. "Rapid movement during development can cause portions of the film to separate prematurely or can cause 'blobs' in the picture."

Great reaction and interpretation(s). Either way, a very good song by PG which fits very well with some of the angular music of the times

2:00 For those confused by this: vitreous humor vs aqueous humor. Aqueous humor is a water-like fluid that lies in front of the lens. Vitreous humor is a gel-like substance that lies behind the lens and in front of the retina.

Too, to a Backdrop, of furthering a Contextual Framework to the Genesis ( ;) ) of this Song, and if Memory serves me correct, in 79' Pete temporarily Institutionalized Himself. - as a Colorization to that Time for him, witness here his Lyrics from Lead a Normal Life, also from his PG3 Album - "It's nice here with a view of the trees Eating with a spoon? They don't give you knives? 'Spect you watch those trees Blowing in the breeze We want to see you lead a normal life."

His first 4 studio albums & So( save for sledgehammer, big time) are gold & great for you both. Hard to find one song that's not engaging. Self reflection & human condition is a common theme. Biko, Intruder, Red Rain. Shock the Monkey, Modern Love, D.I.Y , On the Air, Games w/o Frontiers, And Through the Wire, San Jancinto, I Have the Touch, Red Rain, Don't Give Up, Mercy Street, That Voice Again. All very interested in both impressions.

Yeah, that 5 album run is fucking incredible and really shows how creative Peter Gabriel was from album to album. You got the first one that was very theatric and baroque, the second having a more stripped-down aesthetic to it with an almost proto-punk bent, the third (my personal favorite) getting weirder in both sonics and songwriting, the fourth merging world music influence with the burgeoning digital technology of the time that gives it a very unique sound, and So just being one of the great Pop albums of the era, maybe even of all time. That's not to say there aren't enjoyable songs on the albums after So, but I feel like they got much less adventurous after that and weren't as cohesive in terms of song-to-song bangers.

A different interpretation that I heard from another source has the protagonist of this song as a former prisoner of war who currently suffers from PTSD, and the person with their "mouth to the soda" is a girl he's on a date with. In that situation his date is most likely only staring at him like a "bird of prey" in his imagination, due to his heightened senses. I think the video backs this interpretation up the most of you watch it. It shows him being interrogated and it also shows him with a girl. In addition to that, the people in the video sometimes magically turn into these white-painted creatures who move in a really hurkey-jerky, alien way, and that is a total question mark and I can't figure out how to integrate that aspect into any of our interpretations. I came upon this reaction because I was searching for responses to this song and its video in the hopes that someone would have an explanation for the white-painted people.

@@LiteralistReactions Call it an affectionate nudge. It's along the lines of a story, that may be true but likely apocryphal, about the film 'The Madness Of King George III'. The story goes that they had to remove the 'III' because an American audience would demand to know what happened to the previous two films. 🙂
@LiteralistReactions
@LiteralistReactions Жыл бұрын
The film’s title was not changed nor was it different in America than it was in other parts of the world. The film was always called The Madness of King George, and it bore that title everywhere it was exhibited. The confusion came about because the movie version was based upon a play entitled The Madness of George III, but the film’s producers opted to call their movie The Madness of King George rather than sticking with the play’s title. This is a typical "those dumb Yanks" story that some British like to tell. I find it sad and not much different from telling a joke about any group of people from a particular location, as in Polish Jokes. - JD

7:25 Rather than being advice about remaining silent when questioned by police I've always assumed it's the silence and amnesia of a jailer or policeman during public enquiries following a scandal, such as a death in custody. This is in the context of other tracks on the album, in particular Biko; the South African anti apartheid activist beaten to death in police custody in 1977. There was the usual coverup seen under such regimes: 'Biko was examined by a doctor... who stated that there was no evidence of injury on Biko' 'the country's police minister Jimmy Kruger initially implied that it had been the result of a hunger strike, a statement he later denied.' ' The security forces alleged that Biko had acted aggressively and had sustained his injuries in a scuffle, in which he had banged his head against the cell wall. The presiding magistrate accepted the security forces' account of events and refused to prosecute any of those involved' [All quotes from Wikipedia]. This remains topical see also: "We were asleep at the time", "The cameras stopped working" "The recordings are missing/wiped" etc. The album has the general theme of personal moral responsibility or shortcoming, either personally or collectively. Games Without Frontiers looks at the absurdities of wars, especially proxy ones, but my stand out track is Not One Of Us, about setting people against one another with the key lines: "There's safety in numbers When you learn to divide How can we be in If there is no outside"" You should tackle the album as a whole, it comes from the time when track order was crafted to take you on a journey.

Dave is a person who wishes socialism worked but knows it doesn't, he also knows pure ANYism is flawed. He offers his preferences that he believes would be best for humanity and welcomes discourse on his opinions. This guy started out as a conservative Christian. I met him while he was starting his transition. - JD

@@LiteralistReactions Does he welcome discourse? I don't get that vibe. Most Gens Y & Z I talk to have a "my way, or the highway" attitude, with a generous dusting of moral superiority.
@LiteralistReactions
@LiteralistReactions Жыл бұрын
Not the case with this one. Dave is more open than most. But, think about it... the very concept of "retiring after a long career from the same workplace" is all but extinct while retiring with a pension in general is becoming more and more elusive. Boomers will likely be the last swath of American humanity to fully retire while young enough to enjoy it. Y, Z, and whatever's next have a little right to be upset. - JD
