A Live Edge Bench from an Air Dried Walnut Slab - A Project for the Beginner Chairmaker and Turner.

My friend Jason gave me three slabs of air-dried walnut a couple of years ago. When my wife and I decided the kitchen window needed a bench, I knew one of these slabs would be perfect.
In this video we mill the slab, get an introduction on the geometry and terminology of chair and bench leg design, show how anyone can make beautiful legs on the lathe (just say no to hairpin legs!), and add design elements to a slab to make it stand out from the pack. And we complete the project with a foolproof hardwax oil finish that makes the curly figure of the lumber really pop.

Nice build. I love the way you created that bevel, especially the swooping one at the end. That's a detail only hand tools could achieve. Beautiful slab too, can't wait to see what you do with the other two!

Great video. Need to flip that cleat around when you’re milling. The planer is pushing the material, not the sled. The cleat is doing nothing following behind.

Yep, you’re right. Appreciate the correction. Thankfully, wasn’t an issue as the piece was screwed to the sled but I’ll remember for next time. I was so fixated on the direction of the cutters but the rollers would have things under control, just as they do when you run a piece without a sled. Thanks for watching and the feedback. Definitely an “a ha!” moment for me!

Absolutely stunning. What Osmo product(s) was that? I saw top oil in one clip but did you use their Polyx as well? What sheen? Satin?

Much appreciated. I use Top Oil in satin for most projects. If I want it to be glossier I’ll just sand to a higher grit (600 and higher) and it will give me a beautiful, shinier finish. I use Polyx Raw on maple and ash when I don’t want the light wood to get too yellow. Hope this helps!

@@quillwoodworks Well, your finish came out amazing. Is the top oil considered a hard wax oil as well? I’d love to try out Osmo. Totally a viable way to finish inside your shop without having to spray chemicals like lacquer although I do like how lacquer looks. This seems like a much healthier option.
