Just throwing my 2 cents on this video having spent a lot of time playing Dungeon Universalis. DUN actually excels as a coop/solo game. In fact, I'd honestly say that coop actually works better than 1vsmany. The real shortcoming of DUN is the lack of a good random dungeon generator. I think the main draw to Dungeoneers is that it is designed from the ground up with a good random dungeon experience, just like Warhammer Quest.
@TheDungeonDive

For me DUN is best with someone acting as a GM because of all the hidden information in the quests and the amount of book keeping needed with the enemies.

I've recently spent a lot of time watching a playthrough of DUN and had decided to pick that up in its next campaign but this looks to scratch that same itch and I'm definitely going to be keen to see what the campaign offers. Double sided tiles is great, but not if it's the same art. Perhaps use different art on the reverse - it would save on the number of tiles needed which reduces the materials needed and weight for fulfilment/shipping costs?

Looks cool! Love the hexagonal map! I'd be playing solo though so it is maybe a bit too much work running four characters. I'd love to run a party of only dwarfs though, always wanted that! A band of grumpy dwarfs sent on a quest by their clan chieftain or king or whatever. Maybe 2 warriors, 1 warrior priest and 1 alchemist as my four dwarfs if I get into this. I'll be checking out the campaign and have to deicide then I guess. Great preview video!

Taking another look at this Daniel I think the only thing which could give concern is managing 4 Heroes. I play a lot solo. Working with this number of heroes in such a detailed game is going to be too much. You said that it may be possible to run 2 with some adjustments. Given that dungeon crawl games have a large solo following I hope the designer has some thought to this ready for the KS. I still really like the game it looks like a solid job has been done. But I will need to think carefully if it will work for me.

This has me really excited as a system and I will watch for it on KS. From what I saw it does look like it needs more than one pass by a good editor and a professional graphic designer to get in shape before it hits kickstarter. I also spotted some mind flayers (standees and named in the bestiary) and a beholder, two monsters Wizards of the Coast considers their IP and could lead to legal issues depending on how they are named/used.

Mind flayers and Beholder both show up in Final Fantasy IV, made in the early 1990's. They're not copyrighted by Square Enix, because they're not words that can be copyrighted. Their character designs can be, but not the words themselves because they're just English words that can be used in everyday language. So Wizards of the Coast can't copyright them either.

KS campaign is currently live. I'm probably going to back this... the only question is should I drop out of my Kingdoms Forlorn all-in pledge? This is so much cheaper, no minis, and rogue-like adventure elements. I already own everything Kingdom Death. I love KDM, but I don't need 2 massive campaign games that take multiple shelves, binders, and boxes, with more miniatures than I would ever want. I've never owned Warhammer Quest and I passed on Dungeon Universalis. Dungeon Universalis looked like it was way more than I was looking for. This seems like a good balance. My biggest hesitation is that this is from a first time creator. I also really wish this was a true solo experience. edit: I'm reading through the campaign page a little closer. There is a Companions expansions which lets you use Mercenaries instead of playing with multiple characters. Great.

Hi David! You might be correct, but with a bit of preparation, its really not that bad. The quests are themed towards a certain category of monsters, so you can pick out those standees before starting the quest. You will be filling out the sheets a bit, but it's fairly quick work once you get the hang of it. The lastest version of the character sheet makes it quite simple too with more checkboxes (and they are themed towards a certain profession to make them more streamlined).

The chart for the door is discouraging. Dungeon Universalis may have a better system with its special dice. With the app and the two campaigns, it's also very good for co-op, despite that spawning enemies, finding the standees and understanding their behaviors takes time.

I have a few questions : 1. How is the map used in the game? Would your party discover dungeons by travelling on the map? Could adventures occur solely on the terrain and not involve dungeons? e.g. a city quest or a forest quest? Do you think this game is similar to Journey to the Overland? Would you say Dungeoneers is better or not? Thanks for the video description. I might consider supporting this on KickStarter. Man, I got so many games.
@heidevolk_le_gueux
@heidevolk_le_gueux 2 жыл бұрын
The overworld map is used to travel (physically) between cities/dungeons/points of interest, so in a sense, adventures do happen outdoor (you have outdoor settings with tiles) and indoor

Daniel, thanks for the video! I have 2 questions: Firstly, if someone plays the DM in LOD, can that person be the fifth player (I ask because we have 5 in our gaming group)? Secondly, I saw that DUN can be played fully co-op with an automated DM. Which of these two games are better in that setup (does one stand out as much better without using a DM, fully cooperative)? Thank you very much!
@TheDungeonDive
@TheDungeonDive 2 жыл бұрын
Not really sure. My time with LOD was limited. IMO, DUN is best when played with a human controlling the AI / Darkplayer, and LOD seems to be focused more on pure co-op. As far as 5 players go, that's nearly impossible for me to say. Most of my gaming is done solo, and sometimes I play with a small 3-person group.

I'm sorry. Not meaning to be a party pooper but I'm just so over the trope fantasy dungeoneering (I guess it IS in the title). I mean, the character types are cookie cutter, the landscape on the overland hex map looks super generic, the tiles are not overly inspiring in design or use (especially cuz you pretty much randomize them = no dramatic story beats). I'm sorry but this may appeal to someone new to the hobby, or very grognard-y who has a real passion for this kind of elementary fantasy experience (and to them I genuinely wish them lots of fun with this!) For me, at least, I'm only really interested in pushing the envelope in terms of theme, gameplay structure, or - at the very least - a more original approach to fantasy dungeon crawling. For example, Chronicles of Drunagor. Despite being very easy and still having a rather meh story so far, it still manages to generate some really fun exploration, interesting character ability mechanics and a nice visual flair. Machina Arcana is another one. This has a more engaging theme AND mechanics (despite not having many different enemies). Okko Chronicles? Skull Tales? LOTS of flaws but unique feudal Japanese horror and Pirate themes respectively. I'm not saying these games were perfect but there's a difference between having flaws and, right out of the gate, not being very original in feel, look or gameplay. Still...I wish them luck.

I'd say the MAIN true interest in League of Dungeoneers is its interesting complexity and overall completeness, it goes deeper than all other boardgames of the genre. It does obviously not reinvents the genre in any way, you are absolutely right. What it does however is letting everyone that has already some bits from that genre (minis, furnitures, tiles etc..) play it and live a refreshing adventure that pushes every detail deeper in [good] complexity and "realism" in an already known and familiar environnement. It turns out to be, in my opinion at least, one of the most well-done dungeon crawler boardgame when it comes to TTRPG inclusions and actions diversity/choices.
