My father worked for Mrs Dupont with Kelso as a young horse. If I remember correctly, he had an ionizer grid over the top of his stall, One of his bad habits was he liked to escape his hot walker sometimes and run all over the barn area at Hialeah Park.

Kelso might be the greatest animal performer in American history. He would have been capable of winning the American Grand National Steeple Chase at nine. He performed as a show horse in his later years. As a thoroughbred he, of course, had no equal. His defeated international competition on grass alone puts him ahead of all other American race horses. He defeated 30 of 31 competitors (6 of them champions) on grass with his lone defeat being a 2nd finish to Euro great Match2 in DCInt. In all he defeated 20 different champions a total of 34 times in stakes races. That number 34 is more than MOW & SEC have combined career stakes wins. BTW, those wins vs champs includes 3 different races in which Kelso beat multiple champs needing less than 100% effort.

He was the only one who could answer ALL the questions. He won 13 stks carrying 130+ (6 straight stks @ >mi), he beat 6 international champs on their surface, only one to win hndicp triple crown under 130+ all 3 (SEC never under more than 126), won 2 stks on severe off trks (MoW never ran on such trks), beat 20 diff champs total of 34 times, beat multi champs needing less than 100% effort THREE diff times, set 2 American records in back to back stks races on 2 diff surf (dirt/grss), was a great 3yo (In GCGC won by 13 L over Bald Eagle who won his 2d straight DCInt 2 wks later). He was the greatest and it's not close.

He was and, is the greatest race horse of all-times. Only 3 horses ever won the whitney, the woodward and, the jockey gold cup[when it was 2 miles] in one year, kelsos' the only horse to ever do that 2 times!!! I could go on about kelso but, there's almost no end to his acomlishments. Most amazing thing was he looked like a deer and, weighed 900-something pounds and, still was carrying all that weight and, beating big horses! KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN .

Thanx for the info on 83 Gold Cup sir wow what thats fortuitous. And yes thank dirt mile record still stand and thats incredible to me the only way they beat Dr Fager was use a rabbit and burn him up or a bad trip. He was as dominant against any sprinters in history. I just love him. Sure wish i could see them run in person. Oh well long ago and to far away sigh smh lol.Been researching Your Kelso and most dominat little horse ever in my opinion.

Ran 3 1/14 races under 2 minutes; only horse to run under 1:08, 1:21, 1:33, 2:00; only existing world record with more than 130lbs; carried 130+ 8 times in arow, second to Round Table in the modern era{10}. Yah, well that weight gets heavier becoming a bigger burden the further you have to carry it Eistein. Kelso was great at all distances. To be one of the greatest horses of all-times you have to be great at all distances and, not just be a great sprinter. It alot easier to carry weight at shorter distances einstein! Live and, learn, Kelso was and, is the greatest race of all times and, he only weighed 900 pounds and, look at how much weight he carried for his weight einstein, go do some math. Fager was also a sucker for rabbits, no discipline, man. Give me forego over him and, easy goer had he not got hurt who knows. KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN.

Kelso was a beast with a capital "B." He would have been even better if he wasn't weighted down like a govt mule. He was a small horse who initially weighed less than 900 pounds and never exceeded 1000. but under handicap conditions frequently had to carry 130 pounds or more (136 pounds twice, both wins), even when he'd been out of training, and even when he was believed to be in decline. The weight was telling, as he lost roughly half of those races. Under weight for age conditions he had a much better record. He may well have won six straight HOTY awards except for an eye injury that washed out most of his eight year old season. My favorite horse, and one of just a handful that had no limits.

So true, if you go pound for pound, it was darn unbelievable how Kelso carried all that weight and, still beat many bigger horses. He was a phenom and, a real freak. I loved him and, always will. My God, what a great horse he was. What a story also. Dick Jenkins who was kelsos' exercise rider, may he rest in peace, use to tell me fascinating stories on the great kelso. First thing he told me was how kelso weighed about 1000 pounds if,he did weigh that much, and, how that alone is scary being he carried all that weight and, won most. He was very special.

I have my doubts that even Secretariat could have won 5 consecutive two-mile Jockey Club Gold Cups, breaking the world record three times the way Kelso could. Kelso was a svelte horse who was built for racing two miles and longer in the same way that light and slender human long distance runners are built for those distances.

Go look at kelso at the dc international race and how he did that just 11 days after breaking his won record for the 2 miles jockey gold cup on a sloppy track and how kelso is the only horse to win the whitney, the woodward and the jockey gold cup in one year, two times ! He is also the only to win the handicap triple crown, the whitney, the woodward and the jockey gold cup in year! When he won the handicap triple crown he was only the 4th to win it but they only one to win all 3 races carrying over 130 pounds and, as much as 137 pounds and giving away 20 pounds to a runner up. Problem with yu and alot of people today is that you don't know much about the great kelso. Kelso was in a class by himself. KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN TEDDY.

Kelso could win at any distance. Fager was a speedball and his best distance was 7f to 1M. Kelso carried more weight at longer distances against the best horses that I ever saw. Every time he went to the post he was out to win.

I saw Big Red win the Belmont but he didn't race after 3. Kelso ran at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 and continued to win against all horses at every age. He ran to win every time he ran. He was a small but gallant horse who carried weights that would have stopped any other horse. He ran at every distance from 6f to 2m. Fred Capposella used to say "Kelso the strong horse in the middle of the track whipping and driving and coming alongside". Goosebumps!

Michael I apologize for not responding to your post before this. I well remember Dr. Fager setting the world's record for 1 mile at Arlington in Chicago. I remember listening to Phil Georgeff's unique call when he set the record. I had goosebumps watching that race and hearing Georgeff's telling the world that "Dr. Fager was spinning out of the turn and into the stretch". By the way Georgeff wrote a book about Citation and considered him to be the greatest horse of all time. You have to respect Phil Georgeff's opinion. He called thousands of races and saw the best of the best. I did see Dr. Fager run at Rockingham and beat the field handily. I believe that he was best at a mile or lBess, though he could steal a race if he had the lead to himself. By the way the trainer Johnny Nerud was operated on at Dana Farber in Boston and the doctor who operated was Doctor Fager.
@teddylopez509
@teddylopez509 7 жыл бұрын
The great Allen Jerkens told he really thought Fager ducked the triple crown. Why? Because he wasn't a very smart disciplined horse and , was a sucker for rabbits. Fager was a great sprinter but he never ran 1 mile and a half never mind 2 miles. That's where kelso said goodbye to all horses. No horse was tested more than man of wars' great grandson. kelso could sprint and, go the distance and, rabbits didn't work with the great kelso, like Eddie Arcaro said kelso could run all kinds of ways and, he had great tacticle speed. Hell of a thing he turned out to be that great considering they had to geld him to calm him down and, still they say he was never really a nice horse[laugh]! What a story, somebody said why don't they make a movie out of him. He was and is the greatest race horse of all-times. Mindboggling how the year he became only the 3rd horse to ever win the handicap triple crown which some say is even harder than the regular triple crown, he was and, is the only horse to win all 3 races carrying over 130 pounds in each of the 3 races and he only weighed 900 pounds! In one race he was giving the runner up 20 pounds! That same year he became the only horse ever and, it still stands to win the handicap triple crown, the whitney, the woodward and, the jockey gold cup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and, the jockey gold cup was 2 miles then! When he broke his own record at the jockey gold cup the last time and, that was on a sloppy track he did 3.19 1/5 for 2 miles on dirt than broke the record for grass for mile and a half on e tight turns at 2:23 4/5 againts some of the best horses in the world, and that was just 11 days apart, they should have also voted him dirt champion and, grass champion, don't you thinK?Kelso was in a class by himself like some one said, that says it all. Just that he beat more great horses and, real good horses, giving away weight to most of them, makes him a hell of candidate for greatest racehorse of all-times. Never mind all the crazy things he did, some that only he's done! He was mindboggling really. I'm a kelso fan and, I find some of those things hard to digest[laugh]! Fager was a great sprinter, lacked discipline though. I would have liked to seen easy goer had he not got hurt so much. Might have been the secound coming of the great kelso. Just kidding, but, easy goer would have been one of way up with the best ever. Prove out had he not got hurt so much when he started, he ended up having to retire because of innjuires again after Allen Jerkens' had kept him healthy and, kept him from loggin in. He beat 4 hall of famers in the span of 2 months! So the secretariat fans shouldn't feel so bad that he beat secretariat. Prove out would have been one of the real greats. KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN.

i respect your knowledge Mr Jones but i still rate Forego as one of the greatest hanicap horses to run on dirt but ill concede that Kelso was probably the most versatile horse ever esp at his size best little horse ever but at a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half carrying 136 pounds my moneys on the great Forego and hands down Dr Fager is the best miler to ever run on dirt 58 years and his mile time in Chicago still stands. But opinions are like
@teddylopez509
@teddylopez509 7 жыл бұрын
Yah but look at kelsos' size and weight, forego was 17 hands something and, weighed about 1,200, I think he weighed more than secretariat. Forego had a bad leg sometimes but, kelso or his size was carrying 12 pct of his body weight [900 pounds]. He was carrying more weight than forego they said. When kelso did the 1 mile at his best he did 1.33 3/5 now that was carrying 133 pounds for a horse who weighed 900 pounds and looked like a damn deer. Kelso also could run the distance as you all know. Forego never won the whitney, the woodward and, the jockey gold cup all in one year. As a matter of fact Mike, only 3 horses have ever won that combo in one year, the great grandson of man of war is the only horse that ever done that package 2 times! Yes sir kelso was from another planet. Secretariat never won even one of those. He got his ass kicked in the woodward and, his butt kicked in the whitney and punked out of the 2 mile jockey gold cup to not face speed demon andm stamina horsey prove out. Kelso is also the only, only horse ever to win the handicap triple crown, which was harder than the regular triple crown, the whitney, the woodward and, the jockey gold cup all in one year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only 4 have ever won the handicap triple crown and, kelso was the only horse to win all 3 races carrying 130 or more in each of the 3 races andm mind you he weighed only 900 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kelso was and is the greatest of all-times and like some fella said on here, man, it's not even close. Kelso beat 5 horses that had won triple crown races 12 times in his carear!!!!!!!!! He was beyound them all. KELSOS BIGGEST FAN.

Forego, you've got to be kidding. He was an average 3yo and faced mediocre all-time competition. Kelso at over mi 1/4 had 8 wins & 4 2ds in 12 stakes starts, won 2 as a 3yo. He beat 6 diff international champs on grass at mi 1/2. How many international champs did Forego beat? Forego only won stks races on 4 diff tracks while Kelso won on 11. Forego was beaten by multiple horses in 3 straight stks races TWO diff times while Kelso was beaten by multi horses in 2 straight only once. Kelso won 8 stks races needing less than 100% effort (incl. beating multi champs 3 diff times) while Forego never won with less than 100% effort. This is not just opinion. It is facts supporting a clear logical conclusion that Forego comes up short like all the others when being compared to Kelso as a true thoroughbred.

Man, kelso carried 12 pct of his weight definately more than forego was was 17 hands 2 and, weighed more than secretariat. That;s the most incredible thing about kelso that he looked like a deer and, still was winning carrying all that weight. Forego falls short with kelso, he was one of the greats forego and, I know he did have sort of a bad leg. So they say that would have to water him down after a race. Kelso was just in a class by himself. It's not like kelso was completely sound neither, kelso sufered from colic most of his carear, sopposedly he died from colic. KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN.

Your boy fager weighed about 1,100 pounds and, Ed Bowen told me so, I would think you would know who Ed Bowen is, so that if the great kelso weighed about 900 pounds, that 200 pounds more then the great kelso, so if you're gonna compare how much these horses were carrying let' go by pound for pound for what they weighed and, common sense kelso was carrying more. All those horses were real good horses but, they all fall short when you compare them with the great kelso, for many reasons. Again fager was a great sprinter but, never even ran 1 mile and a half, I've seen his pps. He was a sucker for rabbits also. KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN.

No 1) Kelso was a late starter and Carl Hanford often would enter him in one or two early prep races in order to get him ready for the rest of the year. Often those races were "tighteners" at shorter distances that Kelso's trainer was conceding. If you take out all the races that were strictly ""tighteners" then you see a horse that once the season really began was nearly always was first or second. No 2) In those days Handicap races that Kelso ran in were based on the racing secretaries adding weight to horses with better records and letting horses with less stellar records in with often far lighter imposts to carry. Take a look at the races where Kelso lost by a small margin and you will often see that the winner was often given a far lighter load to carry in races of 1 1/8 miles or more. Rarely did Kelso carry less than 130 lbs while his competition was conceded 10 to 15 pounds. Imagine carrying 132 lbs while your competitor is carrying 110 lbs or less. @@roundtable3501

@@richardyanco3229 Richard, I know all of these things. But that doesn’t change anything I said in my comment. My comment was entirely a response to the original commenter. It was challenging his point of view of Secretatiat vs Kelso. It wasn’t detracting from Kelso in anyway, but rather challenging his narrative about Kelso being far better at any distance, surface, etc. Which simply isn’t true. I have Kelso ranked top 5. It wasn’t an analysis of Kelso’s past performances. It was stating objective facts. Because Kelso had more races and carried more race, it’s obvious that he’s allowed more losses than other horses. Though I’d say it’s hypocritical as many Kelso fans love to justify Kelso’s losses, but give Secretatiat no excuses for his loses. However, with some of his losses, it goes beyond weight and early prep races. Kelso struggled at two main things. The first is races below 1 mile. Especially ones at grade 1 stakes level. The second is races on hard tracks. By hard tracks I mean the fast hard surfaces that were present in the Midwest and the west. He needed the soft and sandy tracks of the east to dominate. Because of those two main weaknesses, I think that deters him from being the GOAT. Someone like Dr. fager has the same weaknesses except in reverse. He struggled at the longer distances and struggled on softer tracks.

@@roundtable3501 Good stuff and quick too. What a surprise. I am working off the top of my head so excuse me. I saw Secretariat win the Belmont. He was outstanding in the 73 Triple Crown. Outside of Sham there wasn't that much competition. While Secretariat was great he also threw in some puzzling "clinkers", Onion for instance. I never saw Kelso when he didn't try his best. He was often beaten at the scales where Secretariat was beaten on the track. Do me a favor and look up Kelso's Past Performances and delete his first start or two of each season and then see what you are left with. Then look at who beat him and look at the weight spread. Kelso ran 63 times during his career and when you scratch his first starts of the year he was always in the hunt. Some of his other non-wins were possibly due to the weight disadvantage.
@roundtable3501
@roundtable3501 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardyanco3229 Okay, I’ll start with hard tracks, since that’s one of the major 2 weaknesses I listed. He was 0 for 4 on hard tracks, out of the money all 4 times. 2 of these were at Arlington, 2 at Hollywood. And just to clarify, by “hard,” I mean the dirt surface they used for those Midwestern and western tracks was a harder dirt composition than the softer more sandy eastern tracks that Kelso raced at for most of his starts. The first one I’d like to look at is the 1960 Arlington classic. It was at Arlington. He was 3 years old, it was his 3rd start that year, and he won the precious 2. He was carrying 117 pounds, so weight wasn’t a factor. He finished 8th beaten 7 1/2 lengths. Now, like I said, this was a habit of him underperforming on these hard tracks. The idea that he needs a specific type of surface (softer tracks) to dominate is problematic and very much hurts his case for being the greatest in my opinion.

Richard, I meant kelso and, citation, not kelso and, man of war when Torcotte said Arcaro told him that secretariat was even greater than them, Again Torcotte is the same man who says huge sweeping turns are harder than tight turns. Teddy Lopez, yes you can believe him. When Secretariat took those "huge sweeping turns", he went faster after each turn! It's called centrifugal force, that is what carried Secretariat. Ron Turcotte was Secretariat's jockey and rode him to many victories!

@@lired70 Those 2 huge sweeping turns sec took at belmont on that fast track right by the rail from tyhe begiinning, which is the shortest way around any track were way easier than those 3 tight turns kelso took for the dc international in 64' when he did 2:23 4/5 and, for 1 mile and a half on grass and, he did the last quarter faster than he did the first quarter!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn the stamina on that deer looking horse!!!!!!!!!!! Most people give that to kelso over secretariats' belmont. Oh and, look at the competition kelso had that was againts some of the best horses in the world. All sec had at belmont was sham and he broke down and, the other 2 horses were bums. @@lired70 How many horses ever set a record on a sloppy track? Some can't even run on one and, kelso set 2 records on w sloppy tracks with standing water on them! Neither secretariat or man of war ever set a record on a sloppy track. Oh, kelso did it when he was only 3. He was still setting records at 7, something else no horse has ever done. You just don't know much about kelso.It's easy to say one horse was better than the other when you don't know much about the other. Not knowing better can be pathetic alot of times. Kelso i in a class all by himself and, you'll find out. He was something else and, my God he only weighed 900 pounds and, at times was carrying 12pct of his body weight. Eddie arcaro who rode both citation and, kelso said that kelso would have beaten the shit out of citation and, he rode citation before citation got hurt and, citation was and, is one of the way up top greatest of all-times. For example citaion ran the 2 mile jockey gold cup at 3, before he got hurt and, did 3:21 3/5 on a fast track, kelso did the 2 mile jockey gold cup and, did 3:19 2/5 and, broke the record on a sloppy track with standing water!!!!!!! What the hell would kelso have done on a fast track then? Maybe 3:18 flat or, better? Go figure. Maybe Arcaro was right when he said that kelso would have beaten the shit out of citation. You have to ride a horse to really know. He rode some triple crown winners and, still said that kelso was the greatest horse he ever rode, he won about pct of the races he had with kelso. Somebody said it was so sad cause it was the greatest jockey at the end of his carear riding the greatest racehorse at the start of his carear. They were almost unbeatable together cause nobody understood kelso more than Arcaro, he had those strong hands and, kelso was a tough little horsey which was why he was gelded, amazing he turned out to be so great when he was so hard to train. Eddie said that at the very beginning he would hold kelso back a bit to keep them from putting even more weight on him! Imagine how many more recoords kelso might have set and, races he would have won by double digits had Arcaro let him go all out!!!!!! Then again they would have killed poor kelso would allthat freakin weight and, he might have lost to horses he would have beaten the hell out of at equal weights or, giving them less weight away. Kelso was something else Patty, he is in a class by himself, he was really mind boggling especially for what he weighed. Miss Dupont ws gonna sell him cause he was so hard to train but, they must have said 'wait a minute this man of wars' great grand son maybe there's some hope for him. It took the great trainer Charles Hangsford to bring it out in him. Kelso beat more champions, more international champions and, more hall of famers than any racehorse in history. Mind you and, his timings would have been even faster had he raced more at belmont than at aquaduct which has tighter turns!!!!!!!!!! Indeed kelso was something else, he was the freak and, to realize when he was horse of the year 5 times in a row for 5 years he wss beating the 3 year old champions of those 5 years and, at 4 he was beating them giving them the advantage by giving them weight away!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crazy cause some of those horse won triple crown races!!!!!!! Nobody did more. I just wonder why Kelso was a gelding? Lasix was supposed to be used for bleeders! A horse's blood pressure goes up 4X the norm when racing. Then some cook, and bleed through the nose. A horse can pee out 10-20 pounds on a single dose of Lasix! Gee, does that make them lighter? They are prohibited to drink 4 hours before the race! Some of these horses really need it, then again there are horses who don't and get it anyway! Maybe Kelso was a gelding because he was a hard to control stallion? That is usually why they geld. My state of mind today is: I love these horses, I am beginning to hate the sport!

Well, yes, the great kelso had a terrible temper and, was hard to train as hell. They say even after they gelded him he was never really a nice horse. It's amazing he was still so great, because they have to be obediant. He was some horsey. He not only inherited his great grandfather man of wars' talents but also his temper. Man of war was also hard to train but, thanbk God they didn't geld him cause look at all the great horses that came out of him, his son war admiral who was a triple crown winner, grandson count fleet who was another triple crown winner down to his greatest decendent the great kelso. Mostly when they geld them it's because there is too much testostorone in them and, they take some out when they geld them. Kelso was the greatest racehorse ever all things considered all respects to his great grandfather man of war who was a hell of a horse considering the conditions he ran under.KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN.

No doubt Kelso is a great little horse but if we compare weights and times that would be ludacris. Dont try the awe he is a bigger horse on me i know the weights on both and Forego carried more weight over same distances and also as per average way more versus his opponents than the lil horse. while i agree kelso was great amd the best little horse to ever run to say he beat better horses is crazy who Gunbow and Quadrangle jeesh no way im buying that one. Also Dr Fager would smoke Kelso from 7f to A mile and a quarter and no comparing times Kelso never carried 140 like the Great Dr Fager who btw stills holds the Dirt mile record after 48 years and is the only horse to win all four big awards in one season for the ages 1968 Champion Horse of the year Champion Sprinter Champion Turf Horse and Champion Handicap horse Even the great Kelso never did that Dr Fager was asked to carry more weight over and over until after 140 in a prep race he was asked to carry 143 in the Met mile and surely would have been the same in th Suburban that year which btw his trainer refused to run him. ill concede that after 1 mile and 1/4 Kelso would prevail but short of that Dr Fager with equal weight would show him his tail. btw if you look at his mile record run he breezed the last furlong so he could have easily ran sub 1:32 in my book and also he ran 20 3/5 seconds for the second quarter the fastest second quarter ever clocked by a horse then and now. Check those facts and forty eight years that record has stood the test of time whil carryin top weight. KELSO the greatest not hardly but most versatile horse to ever run ill give you that one . just saying

I always considered Dr. Fager to be an outstanding "sprinter" who sometimes carried his speed a longer distance. When he won at longer distances it was usually because he "stole" the race and the jock was able to "rate" or "nurse" him safely to the wire. A sprinter carrying highweights was different than a router that had to carry highweights for 1 1/4 mile or better. I did see Fager win at Rockingham at 1 1/4 miles but I can't remember if there was significant competition. Also, "The Rock" was a real speed track. Again, I remember Phil Georgeff's call of Fager winning at Arlington and setting the world record for a mile. By the way, the horse was named for a Boston cancer doctor who saved the life of either Nerud or the owner and they named the horse after the doctor from the Dana Farber Clinic.
