I've only seen 'Quatermass and the Pit,' though my first viewing was with the title, '50 Million Years to Earth.' The final images of the energy 'demon,' and watching James Donald sacrifice himself..... Still gives me chills

This is the story of the birth of Hammer Films as well, launching and then entrenching the most famous careers of at least 3 British actors if all time (Lee, Cushing, Guinness).

I honestly love this franchise. It is very well-written and general well-acted, with very dense and complex plots.

It was Quatermass II I saw on Peter Hawkins' family 10" telly in 1955 when I was 8. Very scary with the thing in the gasometer or whatever it was, the car driving out with an arm hanging out the window and the alien stuffing people in the pipes to block them with blood seeping out. I was only 8. No wonder I'm scarred.

This was a really scary movie of its time. British audiences could more easily identify with the characters because they were obviously British (other than the lead) and spoke with familiar accents and manifest British cultural characteristics, as well as being set in obviously British locations. The monster might've been next door. Whereas American SF such as the brilliant "Them" always tended to have that slight `otherworldiness' because of their American language, cultural nuances and setting...

Brian Donlevy's Quatermass was a very effective portrayal of what somebody called "the scientific power dream of the 1950s." This was connected with the scientific contribution to the Second World War. Quatermass , in these films, was an Anglo-American version of Werner von Braun, who developed the V2 rocket for Hitler and later the Saturn B rocket for the American moon missions. In the 1960s ,however, in "Quatermass and the Pit" the scientist was more like Nigel Kneale's original conception. I wonder how they would handle him today?

Donlevy was a total badass in his Quatermass stint, 'The Pit's' Kier was a perfect follow to Donlevy's balks-out interpretation. Donlevy fights zombie body-snatchers at an alien refinery/greenhouse with machine guns, Kier takes over a subway excavation and finds bugs from Mars hibernating.

Always liked the terse Brian Donlevy Quatermass. The original tv serial version was kinda flat. To me. Which is surprising (to me) since I generally prefer British actors. But, Donlevy was always a favorite in anything.

Great video! I really like Quatermass / Quatermass IV/ The Quatermass Conclusion (1979). I found it after I saw Threads (1984) and went on the search for other series/films that matched that kind of feel. I read that one of the reasons it was disliked was because of that bleak sense of hopelessness. But despite its flaws I really like it. It has some great themes like the youth creating a counter-culture (even if the way it's initially handled is a bit on the nose), embracing something alien which ****SPOILER***** is actually there to harm them *****SPOILER***** which is still relevant today. And I just love post apocalyptic stuff and it basically is that.

I thought The Quatermass Conclusion was a terrible ending for the series. It has some great ideas, but is so long and badly realized on screen. It meandered on forever. The version edited down to feature length was a bit of an improvement, but still not very convincing.

1:21 Nigel Kneale was much opposed to having Brian Donlevy as Pr. Quatermass. Val Guest overruled him and the result is fantastic. Nobody can match Brian Donlevy's Quatermass stern personality.

I have trouble with Donlevy because he's such an unsympathetic bulldog of a blowhard that whenever he shifts into self-parody with a histrionic monologue he makes it impossible for viewers to share Quatermass' passion for science. "Personal feelings have no place in science". Not a message anyone but a Nazi would embrace.

@@robvangessel3766 Entirely agree ! In his 1st Quatermass film, good old Brian is as unlikeable as possible. I remember being astonished (having seen this one only after the 2nd ''Quatermass 2 - Enemy from Space", (where he appeared in a more positive light ) by his sheer disregard for other people's anguish and grief. In the French version I saw, he was rebuked sharply by the astronaut's wife - played by Margia Dean : "Only to serve the selfish people like you !" when he tried to comfort her into accepting her husband's sacrifice ''for science" ! And in the end, he self-righteously walked away promising to ''do it again !" without a thought for the victims of his ''Xperiment" !

Interesting, one of my old ferrets had similar hair on its head and was equally cantankerous. Don't know if Donlevey stank as bad although I hear he was a functioning alcoholic by this point of his career. Andre Morrel, tv Quatermass and the Pit, had a wonky eye similar to one of our cats. John Mills as the Prof in the 80s sported massive bugger grips which made him resemble a demented hamster. Andrew Keir - the Prof in 1967 film Quatermass in Pit - had no features in common with any animal I'd owned so he stood out for me and is therefore my favourite.

The original BBC Quatermass character--as portrayed---was, at least to me--- seriously underwhelming (I say this in spite of being huge fan of British actors and films). Brian Donlevy is a perfect Quatermass, a very different type of "hero"---cantankerous, abrupt, tactless, but dedicated. He was the only Quatermass to me, though Andrew Keir, later, was good in the role. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the commentary and information.

Oh, man. These films freaked me the heck out as a kid. My personal favorite is the 1967 film Quatermass and the Pit. Any trailers you find on KZfaq won't do it justice. It's a Hammer film so the color in the film is just gorgeous. It really reminds me of the 1985 film Lifeforce (the original British cut, not the butchered American version). If you like over the top spooky mysterious sci f with a bombastic ending, I would highly recommend you check it out. Look around on the Net for a copy. I'm sure you'll find it. Seriously folks you'd think 3 into one would make him a new messiah, the pope would've sensored that gag but I beat him at the 18th hole. And speaking of holes Bings' wallet was found in a cave near Desmoines, apparently it was his round when Dean Martin walked in. If Jerry Lewis had been there who knows where it would've ended up - if your not laughing just know that gag was sponsored by Paramount. But I digress, this huge gelatinous blob is giving me the fear, it reminds me of the time I walked in on Ethel Merman changing costume. I figure if I go on long enough it'll sacrifice itself just to make it stop - it doesn't know me very well does it folks? Where are they Val? Have they left the theatre? Make my cheque out to Leslie Townes, its more tax efficient.

@@tablescissors People are simply not as prudish as they pretend. All people -- men and women alike -- fuck around like animals when it is possible and convenient for them; and then they often pretend to be "abused" when _that_ is convenient. You can never be cynical enough when you have to do with humans. It is NOT a big deal for ANYONE to fuck around unrestrained; but it is popular to pretend it is a big deal, and lie about what really happened.
