YES, I KNOW I REFER TO PRINCE ALBERT AS QUEEN VICTORIA'S WIFE - I RECORDED THE VIDEO LATE AT NIGHT AND UNSCRIPTED!!!!
Last year Prince Philip was buried in the Royal burial vault in Windsor castle and recently Queen Elizabeth II was laid to rest temporarily in it too. In this video, I look at the history of the vault, how it came to be built, what it looks like, how it is used and some of the members of the royal family that are buried within it.

Thank you. I’ve wondered about this for a long time because of a story told to me by my late Mum and Dad. They were married in March 1954 and went to London on Honeymoon. One day they visited Windsor and in those days it was very quiet and not the tourist attraction it is now. When they were in St George’s Chapel there were no other visitors there and my Dad asked a gentleman (probably a Verger) where the King was buried and was told that he wasn’t, he was in the Vault and would stay there until the Queen Mother died. He then took my Dad down into the Vault (Mum stayed in the Chapel all on her own) and he was shown the Kings coffin. Dad always laughingly described it as “being left in a dusty old corridor” but it wasn’t until the death of Prince Philip last year that Mum and I realised where he had actually been taken and that this was a huge privilege as Dad had been allowed somewhere where the general public are not allowed to go. I always imagined it as just a plain old “corridor” as Dad had described it so it has been really interesting to find out more about the Royal Vault and it’s history.

I couldn't imagine being buried in a vault. A person's resting place, no matter who they were in life, should be the ultimate momento mori. In a couple thousand years, no amount of embalming fluid, pressure and temperature monitored vaults or formaldehyde can reverse the fact that these vaults will be nothing more than a relic of a forgotten time, same with the Romans and Egyptians with their "marvelous" burial conditions.

I worked at Windsor Castle for about 10 years, and an old employeed told me that there was a tradition that, when the coffin of Henry VIII was opened, some liquid was in the bottom of the casket, which was quoted as being "odourless, colourless and flavourless"! Visitors to St George's Chapel should look out for the memorial to Princess Charlotte, which is very moving.

There is a spiral staircase near the altar that takes you down to the vault, Queen Victoria was a frequent visitor - I'm not sure of the present family go down. Windsor has long been a favoured residence of the royal family, it was George III's residence of choice towards the end of his life hence the construction of his vault. Prior to him only one king had chosen to be buried here, Edward IV, who began the construction of the present St George's chapel. For the Queen it was really the place she felt most at home.

Most likely, the entrance I believe is in the floor under a black stone that currently bears the name of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. So they will probably see the coffins of both of them as well as the Queen and Prince Philip. @@allanbarton I don't believe that the number of spaces for coffins is six. I remember reading that there are four spaces in the small chapel, meant to accommodate the remains of George VI, his wife Queen Elizabeth, the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II. Princess Margaret wished to be buried in the chapel with her parents but, as there was no room for her full-sized coffin, she asked that her body be cremated and her ashes laid with her parents and this was done.

@@corrietapp3178 I have read both four and six - George Pace the architect's instruction was I believe to create a vault for three sovereigns and their consorts, which explains why Margaret's cremated remains could be buried, but not her body. I suppose we will only know when the King dies.

Sovereigns' funerals were much more private affairs than they are now - the Queen's funeral is the most public and ceremonially complex that we have ever seen. George III, George IV, and William IV lay in state and were buried in Windsor very much in private.

@@docjackal8511 what I mean is there are kings and queens in the vault in coffins along with other members. Our current queen will be buried like her father and alongside Philip. Why aren’t the other members in the vault also buried like this?

@@04jorambo Just to clarify, our late Sovereign will not be buried in the conventional sense you and I understand (into soil). She like many royals before her, including the late Prince Philip, will be interred in the Royal Vault and on a 'shelf'. Her coffin made over 30-years ago, is lined with lead, to prevent moisture entering the coffin that could hasten decomposition of the body. This is why she was able to lie in state for many days in Westminster Hall without any noticeable smell.

@@04jorambo good question… I think she means why isn’t there going to be a tomb for them given they were monarchs in their own right

Who buries Queen and prince Philip in the final resting place? Is royal family members or their heirs do present in burial site for the burial process?

The royal family will be present and the Dean of Windsor who is in charge of the chapel will officiate at the service.

In looking at the crypt that holds QE mother and father it appears they are buried underground with black marble marker on top? It appears very small space. Will QE And DE be buried in this room or coffins just set inside it. It’s hard to figure out from the picture.where is PM I know she was cremated.

Under the black stone that marks the burial of George VI is another vault containing space for six coffins. The two remaining spaces now the Queen and Prince Philip have been buried there are for Charles III and Camilla. Princess Margaret had to be cremated in order to be buried with her parents.
