This video is a look inside Write by Number, a 1st grade-12th grade writing curriculum. ⬇️ CLICK TO SEE MORE INFO ⬇️
📝 Write by Number is a systematic, explicit writing program for students in 1st grade-12th grade. With clear mastery-based stages instead of grade levels, it is designed for a student to work progress as they are developmentally ready and have mastered the appropriate skills of previous stages. In this way, students can move through the program at the rate that best suits their needs. It can work as a stand-alone program and be the only program your student needs for formal writing instruction or it can be paired with another language arts or writing curriculum. Because it is skill and craft-based, not content-based, you can easily integrate it into your literature and content area studies.
🧠 The research on writing instruction is clear - all children benefit from systematic, explicit, skill-based writing instruction. For more on the research, check out the links here:

As a college professor turned homeschool mom I can't tell you how awesome this program is. I wish all my former students had learned these skills coming into college.

Can you please do a comparison of Write by Number & IEW, especially with regard to outlining? Thank you so much for the video walk through. Was much appreciated 🙏 ❤

I'll add it to my list. Both programs teach outlining. There really aren't a lot of differences when it comes down to it. The main thing when considering writing curricula is that the curriculum teaches the writing process explicitly.

Thanks for sharing such a thorough video. Since homeschooling I can confess to having knowledge, but still growing in the (systematic) process of teaching it. Sometimes, I can forget the puree food before mixing in the solids if that makes since. I think it’s also nice to know there’s options of material that is useful long term and not so school model and setting specific.

Thank you so much for this! Curious what your plans for writing instruction with your first grader will look like next year? We use LOE and I was planning on leaning on IEW for writing. Now I want to throw this in the mix, too. You had me at “liked TWR but not sure how to implement it”.

The struggle is real! So my first grade *wants* to do IEW People and Places. We are will also be doing PW 3, which includes some writing. I figure I can throw in WBN pretty easily because she would only be ready for a couple of stages and once she knows the basics, it is pretty easy to integrate with content area. I am working on some checklists (that I will print/laminate and stick in my planner) for language arts areas so I don't forget different things we can incorporate. Hoping to share that soon!

@@homespun.childhood I'd love to see the checklists you develop. I'm using Pinwheels, elements of MCT and Oak Meadow, and now WBN with my children.

Thanks for the video! I ended up purchasing this based on your review and I know it will be a great resource. Do you have a goal for how many stages you want to do by the end of the year with your third grader? I also have a third grader and I know every kid is different but it would be nice to have an idea about what we should be aiming for each year.

Great question! We have been working on writing for several years now. Last year we worked up to Stage 2 independently and stage 3 as a shared writing activity. This year maybe we will get through stage 5 and be working on stage 6? We are also doing IEW structure and style A this year, so we shall see.

@homespun.childhood why are you doing both? Does WBN not cover outlining and dressups like IEW???

Thanks for the walk through! If you were to recommend one writing programme, which one would that be?
@homespun.childhood

It really depends on the kid and the family's needs! I tend to lean more IEW because there are more options, but again, depends on the family.

Yes, there are a lot of overlaps, but in order to use the program the way it is intended, you need both.

On the page about can I use with current language arts does she detail about what curriculum it may pair well with? 😊

No - which makes sense business wise, right? She's not going to be like "Oh hey, go use this with xyz writing program!" We will use it with IEW, literature, and content area studies.

Hi. I have 3 kids. Next year they will be 5th 8th and 10th. Could I use this for all three and where would they begin?
@homespun.childhood
@homespun.childhood 3 ай бұрын
You sure could! Families who have multiple school age kiddos really get the best bang-for-your-buck with WBN. You would start them all at the beginning and then each child would move at their own pace. Your 10th grader would move through it much faster than your 8th grader, and 8th faster than your 5th grader. The teacher guide has a section on pacing.

So with this program they can write on anything they want, correct?
@homespun.childhood
@homespun.childhood 3 ай бұрын
Yup! Any content they want. This is the beauty of the program, for me. We integrate language arts into all our content studies, so we usually apply these lessons to our science/social studies writing.
