🧠 The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) offers explicit and systematic writing curricula. People & Places in Our Community is one of their theme-based writing programs - meaning the IEW structure & style method is taught through an overarching theme. Join me as I walk you through People & Places in Our Community and share my thoughts as a former teacher, turned homeschool mom and literacy specialist.

Great video, very informative. Are you going to use Pinwheels along side IEW? Just curious how you would work that out if so. Thank you!

So, I wasn't planning on using IEW alongside PW yet, but my daughter really wants to do this program so alas. If you have a kid who loves writing or you feel like you want more writing, then People and Places is a great one to add in (it's gentle and fun).

Love this! Looks like such a valuable writing tool, even for parents like myself who feel this wasn’t incorporated well when I was in school. I always struggled when it came to writing a summary or retelling a story in my own words. Thank you for going through this.

Wow! What an excellent review. Thank you for sharing! 😊 This seems like a topic my upcoming 3rd grader would really enjoy. We’ve never used IEW but have been seeing such positive reviews on this program. This specific one you shared seems like it would be a great intro into IEW. I’m just not sure if Structure and Style level A or B would be a better fit for my rising 6th grade student considering we’re brand new! 🤔

Yes, the theme-based programs are great for beginning writers. For your 6th grader, if they have some writing experience and can handle writing a paragraph, then I would say Structure and Style B. If they have no formal writing experience, you could start with A.

I appreciate all of your videos so much, they’re so helpful! My son is in second grade right now. We started writing with ease at the end of first grade because he didn’t seem ready before that and we are in the middle of it right now in second grade. I’m really attracted to this as well though and feel like it hand holds the parent a little more in the upper grades. Do you think this would be a good start in third grade or is there another book they have that’s between this and structure and style A? Jumping into structure and style A seems too much in third when we haven’t used it before. What are your thoughts?

Hey - sorry this response is so delayed! Yes, I think IEW does a great job of supporting both the parent and the student. They have several other thematic programs that are a better fit for students in 2nd-4th grade. Check out my blog post on IEW recommendations here: www.homespunchildhood.com/blog/iew-a-guide

I was under the understanding that with IEW that you have to have a computer because there are parts of the lessons that are online? Can you do it all thru textbooks, or is it also on the computer, too?
@homespun.childhood

Nope! Only the video-based classes like Structure and Style need a computer. All their theme programs, like People and Places, do not need anything other than the student book and guide (free pdf of the teacher guide is included with the student copy).

Great review and very thorough. Question: I have not started a writing curriculum…could I start with this one or should I start with PAL from IEW? My daughter 6.5 yo and is a solid reader and has great penmanship just wondering if this better suited for a child that already knows how to construct sentences to write on their own yet or can I just jump right in?

You don't have to do PAL! You can jump right in to People and Places 😀

Do you feel it is too much for a first grader? I love the look of it, but wonder if older would ve a little better?
@homespun.childhood
@homespun.childhood 11 ай бұрын
I think if used appropriately, no. It really depends on the kid and their skill set at this stage. With my daughter, 6.5, we will use this and I will scaffold as necessary - she won't do all the reading or writing, it will be a shared process and I'll write down some things for her. Content wise, it's going to be a hard sell for kiddos much older than 7.5, in my opinion.
