A Macro photography walk with some spring bugs

In this video, I go out for a walk to find something interesting in the hedge row, and I was very happy with what I found, I also go over my technics for taking insect photos

Great images and a helpful video. Now I'm waiting for my 2 1/2 feet of snow in my yard to melt here in Canada.

Thanks Tom, wow as much as I love snow for photography it can be a real pain, we had snow cover the country last week and it completely missed us thankfully. Hope it clears soon for you.

Hi Keith hope you're well, a great set of images on what looks like a brilliant sunny day. I've done some test macro shots with various cameras and I think I'll use my Nikon D300 which will be the best choice, it's only 12mp but is a cropped sensor,so my 105MM macro lens will in effect be a roughly a 150mm macro lens. My favourite images were of the lady bug (in Wiltshire we call them lady birds), hopefully I'll be able to get out over Easter for a photo trip so I can try some macro. Hi Jon, hope you are both well, it certainly was a lovely day, a crop sensor is a good choice, I did debate on using my crop sensor camera, which has less mp than my full frame, in the end, I decided on using my full frame for convenience as it would be another set of batteries for me to forget lol, we call them ladybirds too, I think its an English thing, the rest of the world call them ladybugs, don't ask me why I called them ladybugs lol. Good luck with the macro trip.

Very nice video, great “tips and tricks”, I like your idea of moving a bug from one place to another with a stick, it’s a good think you’re not photographing cows🤣. I'm not going to ask you about camera settings because it always depends on the situation, but I’m curious about the flash, are you using TTL or manually setting the flash power?

Hi Enrique, thanks for commenting, I am very glad I'm not photographing cows, I can't imagine the size of the stick I would need lol. I use a manual setting for my flash, mine has two sides to it so I set them individually, I usually set them around 1/16th and 1/8th power and take a test shot, then adjust the strength based on the test shot, on this particular day I had to adjust mine to 1/4th and 1/8th, once I have adjusted my power according to the test shot I generally don't need to adjust them again unless I'm photographing something on a bright background, then I usually overexpose the image because I forget to change the flash lol. But generally for my flash 1/16th and 1/8th will usually do the trick.
