I use to work at a airfield in Japan. Birds would constantly fly against the wind like that because that's them working out and strengthening their wings.

Actually, this is a Kestrel and it is known for doing this. It's actually a bit easier for them when the wind is going against them as they can hover with much less effort.

1:01 that’s a kestrel, and that’s completely normal for them to hover like that. I see them loads and they literally just hover for a few minutes before diving down to catch the voles and mice

Off the coast of Perth I saw a water funnel. It was very narrow and very stable, a cylinder of water, just chilling out from the bottom of the cloud to the surface of the sea. It stayed in the one spot, swayed only a little, and when I squinted I saw it was rotating. Took me a moment to figure out what the hell it was. Nature is full of interesting surprises.

As I've seen in some of the comments, the bird is a kestrel. This is how they hunt. Fairly common in the UK and other areas. IRL they look just as gravity defying as in the clip.

Avians' ability to stabilize their head movements is found in a lot of birds. You see it in chickens when they're held and tilted to the side.

When I was young, like 7 or 8, I went down a slide and the wind blew real hard and at that moment this sparrow was flying about 7 feet or so away me and it was just standstill. Blew my mind and I remember telling my mom or dad immediately as my feet touched the ground.

That falcon is actually called a kestral, and they're the only bird of prey capable of hovering. They can also see in the near ultra violet light which means that they can see urine tracks of mice and voles, and they are able to keep themselves focused on their prey without moving it's head much :D just thought I'd share this (Also they are classed as part of the falcon family so it's not totally incorrect)

Falcon: high frequency, multiple decoupling with air pressure sensing through two pitot-like tubes (nostrils) and linear decoupling of position of body from wing-tips and tail to body. Low-frequency decoupling from body to head. Head must be held still as there's no eye-muscles to move to keep their eyes on their dinner (a little mouse).

Falcons do that all the time. Heck, even seagulls do it to some degree, like when you’re feeding them. They make constant adjustments and ride updrafts, which is also why some birds’ flocks are so mesmerizing

Fun fact, the "falcon" is specifically a kestrel, and male. You can tell because the females have brown heads rather than grey. Kestrels can be easily identified at a distance by that same hovering or kiting behaviour, often over roadsides. :3

Thats how gliders (small planes without engines with large wings) gain altitude as well, the pilots look for thermal columns or any rising hot air (like the wind hitting the side of the cliff in the video) and the way a glider flies is basically slowly loosing altitude in order to produce lift (the force acting on the plane to push it up, keep it afloat) and generate speed. Most gliders have a cruising speed of around 100km/h, thats when the drag coefficient is at its lowest value (ofc in flight) and the lift coefficient is at its highest (it is calculated by measuring the altitude of an aircraft and the distance it travels on the ground until it lands or reaches the ground)
