I like the ending a lot-it's very refreshing. Most horror games take the route of having the protagonist killed or rekilling the vengeful spirit, so having the protagonist just sit with their friend and be there for him in his final moments is very touching. It's nice to see some games that acknowledge that in the end, ghosts are just normal people who need help passing on.

I think the ghost blamed them somewhat because not only did they not go with them, they gave them the headphones so they couldn’t hear the train coming. But more than that, I think they just wanted someone to be with them at their final moments because Marcus didn’t die instantly. His legs were crushed and he died slowly from blood loss and the cold.
@vinesauceobscurities

It's actually much worse. He got sliced into two at the waist. Some IRL train accident victims have been known to end up like that and stay alive long enough to know what happened to them. In one case the victim managed to make a phone call to a loved one before he passed on.

in defense of the protag, 1. you could still hear the train even with headphones as they are very, very loud. 2. trains tend to have lights on them so you can see them coming at night 3. you can feel the vibrations on the track 4. peripheral vision is something we have to see dangers coming from the side

You know, this is one of the rare stories I see in horror games that touch on a redeeming/healing ending. It's mostly like say, the ghost of your past does kill you or your memories continue to haunt you forever, a bad end if you will. Characters must be punished for something they've done, even if they were kids or it sadly had to happen. So it's nice and bittersweet to see that change. Chilling atmosphere throughout and I really like the premise. Also, flashback to all the ps1 demo games I came across. This was a memory trip for me with that one bike game. omph I'm old.

Jesus that's dark. So we're haunted by the death of our friend Marcus and we blamed ourselves for his death because we gave him the headphones. He blasted it so loud that he didn't hear the train and got hit. Which... Idk if headphones are so advanced that they can block the sound of a TRAIN, but it was snowing so maybe the noise was deafened. Either way, poor Marcus and protag.

i believe it can be! it can be a distraction, making it more likely that you could get hit :( which is what likely happened to our dear protagonists friend. esp if theyre nice or even noise cancelling. One more thing is that when a train passes by, it creates a bit of suction, making it more dangerous. " Fast trains can create a vacuum called a 'back draft' that can blow you over or suck you under a train." thats why kids are told not to wear headphones near train tracks and to steer clear of train tracks in general.

Back around 2002, a newly orphaned me and the group of homeless teens I ran with had found ourselves getting worried about winter approaching Detroit, so we decided it was time to go train hopping westbound. A couple of the guys were like 18-20, and had made their way out tehre and back a couple years in a row, so even young bloods like myself who hadn't hoped trains before - well we trusted in the experience of others in the group to keep us on the right track... To keep this short, I'll just say right now that we never ended up leaving the state.. We were kicked back onboard tossing back swigs of vodka when a friend got way too trashed and decided to explore the different carts on the train.. He was climbing around on top of a cart drunk. We all saw him afterwards... It was terrible..

The biking was good and the sound effects for the game in the game were appropriate, got a good chuckle from that. The scares here aren't too memorable to me just due to their jumpscare nature, but the ending more than makes up for it. Both in the Dread X Collection games and just horror in general, you don't get that many happy endings all things considered. Not only is this a happy ending, it's rather touching. Getting to say goodbye, to apologize for not being there, is surprisingly poignant for this.

I think the first jumpscare was actually really good, but then the next couple where the ghost was just like "lol hey what game u playin" was where it started to cheapen. If there were a few more where the ghost was maybe seen in the reflection of the tv when the screen went black or the protag closed their eyes for too long, or even the face just faintly in a shadow, it would have completely knocked it out of the park. The simplicity of the whole thing and having a healing type ending made it something that sticks out for me.

The initial jump scare at 6:47 was well done (if cheap). It's the sort of scare that you can see coming if you think about it, but the developer did a good job of not making you think about it so it works out well. And the scare at 7:25 had that nice sense of dread about it. Nothing better than strange thing slowly approaching you out of the darkness! But, yeah, the other scares felt very disconnected, both narratively and mechanically. They were just sorta there. Refreshing ending and a pretty cool game overall!

All anyone wants in their final moments, especially when in that state, is a comforting touch of someone they call a friend or more
@Demonskunk

Lots of other people have said it already, but the reason the character is being haunted seems to be his guilt over borrowing his friend his headphones before he got hit by the train. He feels like it's his fault because he didn't walk his friend home, and because he borrowed him the headphones that might have made it hard for him to hear the train coming. So the haunting could just be a manifestation of his guilt. The jump scares and fucked up graphics are the memories and pain coming to the surface in a spike of anxiety, and finally finishing the game gave him some kind of closure.

12:59 Okay that part got a great chuckle out of that part. But overall another great short but unique experience (although agreed the jumpscarws were cheap) I do like that it doesn't end in that cliche bad ending where protag dies, but ends in a gory yet somber way.

Hes scared to go alone walking home in the woods but the player is tired thus lending Marcus headphones to keep his feeling of uneasiness fade. Everyone had experienced that feeling so to cancel that out we do things that keeps us focusing on doing what we need to do. Sometimes the discomfort is so overwhelming we push ourselves to do it faster, like im so scared to cross this long road and im alone so im just gonna run.

back in the day of PlayStation1 cathode ray tube were most common tv, not to mention all consoles put out 4:3 ratio video signal, that PS1 f.e. was best played with SCART (kinda like primitive version of HDMI) connected to TV, so yeah ontop of the nostalgia factor for protagonist there are some tech limitations the orig hardware can manage ^^

@@maikt904 I'm well-aware that old things are old, I said I didn't see a NEED for it to be a CRT. The other TV would've been perfectly capable of displaying the game.
