A Chinese man’s AirPods suddenly exploded inside his ear when listening to music. A gym-goer set down his AirPods, when one side started to smoke, and could’ve gone through the same ordeal. Using electronic devices is just a part of daily life, but when batteries can suddenly combust, what damages can they cause? Why do batteries explode, and what precautions can we take? Let’s get into it!

Lithium ion batteries exploding is an extremely rare occurrence. As Brew points out, there must be multiple failures and oversights by companies designing products for this to happen at all, and with the sheer number of electronic devices powered by lithium ion batteries (more than the number of people on the planet at this point) it is bound to happen. That doesn't mean that these devices are dangerous or harmful.

Few mistakes in the video: The Li-on or Li-po batteries do not necessarily have to have a (hard) metal case. Some have a "metal pouch" instead. And if you completely discharge these, you do not break them, but you severely degrade them. In addition to this, if your device has the option to cap the charge to about 55 to 80% you should use this to allow safe unsupervised charging (like overnight)

Everyone forgets about lead acid batteries. They're old tech but still used everyday in cars and battery backups such as UPS devices. Also rechargeable from the beginning.
@legoferrari14
@legoferrari14 8 күн бұрын
Unfortunately lead-acid batteries have a lot of problems that make it unsuitable for a lot of modern applications. Performance-wise, Lead-Acid batteries' energy density is rather low; requiring a large volume of it to reach a comparable mA/h to other battery types, especially Lithium-ion. In terms of reliability, Lead-Acid batteries can't be discharged anywhere near as deeply without resulting in performance deterioration and thus doesn't last as many power cycles. Lastly, in regards to safety, while Lead-Acid is nowhere near as volatile as Lithium-ion or Lithium-polymer batteries when damaged, Lead and Acid's health hazards are pretty obvious. They're almost entirely relegated to powering the starter-motors and auxiliary functions of combustion powered road cars as a low-cost easily-replaceable power supply for functions not dictated by the ICE.

I got slapped in the ear once, tearing my eardrum in half. Going deaf feels like being underwater. It came back after 15 minutes, with frequency response being bizarre (I could hear chairs being moved around a floor away over the noise of the classroom I was in) and decades later my hearing is still horribly off balance. I set the balance on my phone to 75% to the right to get an even sound. (the rupture also got infected and this caused it to burst again, although "burst" is the wrong word for such a slow tearing process)

@@chaos.corner That, wouldn't protect things around it, it would only make it worse. It seems that when they send fire fighters to fight these fires, they simply aren't trained to fight lithium fires. So they try smothering with water, but it doesn't work, so they end up pouring water on it for hours, until all the lithium burns away. To put out a lithium fire you do need to smother it, but it is extremely dangerous to use water to smother it. Great PSA... Lithium Ion batteries are freaking terrifying if they malfunction. Its amazing how many people have no clue how explosive they are. One thing to note on the chargers though. Its perfectly fine to leave smarter devices like your laptop or phone plugged in. Most devices have fairly smart charge controllers and will stop charging the battery once full, and will just use the charger to power the device. This is more of an issue with simpler electronics. With that being said, leaving a lithium battery at 100% for extended periods of time is also bad for the battery, and will make it degrade faster. Pro tip to make your lithium batteries last longer is to only charge them to around 85% capacity. This puts less stress on the battery and can extend the life of the battery.

@robw3610
@robw3610 Жыл бұрын
@@charlielucas3386 It has to do with failures rather than normal operation. Lithium itself is highly combustible. Any and all lithium based batteries have a chance to randomly explode if certain conditions are met. Most commonly if they are over charged or an internal short of the battery components. I guarantee if you took a sharp object and punctured your Ebike battery, you're gonna have a bad time. Most Lithium batteries have small embedded charge controllers that are responsible for controlling charging, discharging, temperature regulation, etc. In theory the conditions for a battery to explode should never happen, but in reality, sometimes the numerous safety systems in these products fail. And in the case of lithium based batteries, they explode when they fail.

@@probropalzlive6961 probably has more to do with the age of the laptop than anything. Lithium Ion batteries are really only good for about 2 years. Most cellphones, laptops etc. have safety mechanisms, that automatically separate the battery from the electrical circuit when done charging, after they activate the device (almost) fully draws its power from the charger and the battery just sits there as if connected to nothing. This prevents overcharge damages. In the HP laptop seen in the CCTV footage in this video it seems like that mechanism failed and kept the battery connected for too long, or any of the thermal safeguard failed and let the battery overheat and thermally run away.

Can I just say, I never understood the concept of air pods. 1) they fall out and good luck finding them 2) they have dangerous batteries inside that can cook you from the inside out if accidentally ingested. 3) they can explode 4) they have limited battery life 5) expensive as hack Conventional ear pods: 1) you can't really lose them 2) literally tied to your phone so you will notice when and where you drop your phone on accident 3) don't explode 4) no battery required 5) cable is long enough for you to comfortably work out while wearing them

Airpods i can understand wireless earbuds in general idk. Wireless earbuds can be had for 20$ which still have a battery life of 5 hours And wireless is just more convenient cuz the wire doesne get stuck behind a door handle or something and i can go upstairs without taking my phone with me. (I have both wired and wireless i like the sound quality of wired more thats why i mostly use those)

There were videos a few years back about a safer and completely dry battery that used some new tech at the time to be a lithium ion battery that couldn't explode. It could also handle being cut up, it just lost a max charge capacity depending on how much was lost.

@@Klust413 I mean they're no 200 dollar buds or anything, they are skull candies. I'm being facetious when I say an hour and a half. Probably closer to 2 or 2 and a half. if I'm using only one while the other is charging, I have to swap them 3 times throughout a work day. Maybe they used to hold more when they were newer, either way I just prefer wired buds. Probably not gonna go out of my way to get airpods or the ones youtubers promote all the time.

This is good coverage on these batteries here. Brew should do a follow-up video since he forgot to mention Nickel-Cadmium rechargeable batteries and Rayovac had rechargeable Alkaline batteries, too and Rayovac was the only brand to produce them (to my knowledge, anyhow). When Rayovac first made the rechargeable Alkaline batteries (AA and AAA) which had the full 1.5 volts (rechargeable AA and AAA batteres were otherwise always 1.2 volts) it was great! However, Rayovac later manufactured a newer charger with the same design while a slightly different look and the rechargeable AA and AAA batteries got the same treatment - I went through several sets of these newer Alkaline rechargeables and the newer ones ALL corroded in the Alkaline chargers which is probably why they stopped manufacturing them!

Feels like a wasted opportunity to also mention the Peugeot 307 models that also started self combusting. Still, I have a phone with a headphone jack, that I use for wired headphones. Only issue is one of the shirts I have that seems uniquely suited for making static electricity that zaps the cord so hard I can feel that in my ears. I no longer use headphones while wearing that shirt.

I'm not an airpods fan myself, but it should be noted that their are hundreds if not thousands of airpod knockoff look-a-like products being sold around the world, and China is where most of those fakes come from, and it's a race to the bottom for cost. Airpods being one of the best selling wireless headset in the world, the clones and knock-off's are everywhere and things like safety, water-proof rating, proper battery, are expensive. Linus even reviewed some knock-offs, you get the point. Make sure to get the real 1st party product when it comes to this sort of thing. Apple has confirmed that in nearly all cases the airpods were knockoffs or refurbished using incorrect parts. Just should be noted I'm a Sony fan, and yes there are fakes that have also exploded.

How it happens is the batteries inside the wireless earbuds will start to get hot from long periods of usage of the buds. When this happens most newer wireless eardbud models such as airpods, and Galaxy buds will notify the user through the app. And to either take them out and let them cool down. Or in most cases when they overheat they will automatically turn themselves off to stop the battery from overheating and possibly causing an explosion. My guess is since the airpods he showed in the video were 1st Gen airpods. I was thinking that could've possibly been the reason that they exploded. Because they most likely didn't have that capability until either they got a software update which allowed them to perform the safety measures. Or airpods gained the ability when the airpod pros were released.

Allegedly Sodium batteries handle high temps better, although Sodium + Oxygen still kinda explodes. Lower cost of production, and apx 90% as efficient as Lithium batteries, and a higher thermal rating might make them the future. Even with a slight step down in performance it could be better option for most use cases due to safety and cost.

I had a Note 7, preordered it for my birthday. I remember it having weird charging issues, going dead at 30% battery. I also remember taking it off the wireless charger one night and it was hot to the touch. Afterwards I heard about them exploding and the recall. I had to fly later the next month so I had to get rid of my Note 7 immediately.

About the electric car batteries, we had an expert on that subject give a conference at my college. In the field, spontaneous combustion was in essence combustion without external factors (so not really spontaneous). Also, lithium batteries really aren’t the best because of this risk, so they’ve worked on a few variants that don’t start burning randomly.
