A woman joins a contest to win a Wii for her three children. The rules are simple: drink as much water as you can, without taking a bathroom break. However, the contest was flawed, and caused 10 people to lose their jobs, along with her life. How could water be toxic, or even dangerous? Isn’t drinking water a good thing? What about sports drinks? Let’s get into it.

This is why students should never not be allowed to go to the toilet. Teachers always say you can’t go because you should’ve gone at break time even when you didn’t need to go then. They also say you can’t because they’re in the middle of a lesson. Going to the toilet when you need to is more important than finishing a lesson.

The main problem is that most people are unaware that the overconsumption of water does have negative effects, which is usually not taken into consideration because it's generally assumed that it's the best thing you can drink, especially since so much of our bodies are made of water. Because of this, she probably didn't realize how harmful it had the potential to be to her by drinking too much, but that doesn't make this case any less tragic

its nice of the nurse to phone in and warn the organizers about the dangerous repercussions of the game mechanics. this reminds me of a doctor who happened to watch a lady in tv and tried his hardest to locate her and advise her to get checked for throat cancer or something after seeing something suspect on her throat ( i think there is a small mass on her throat).turns out she really has something and thanks to the doctor it was operated on early.

Those hosts of the radio contest also didn’t think about negligent homicide. They didn’t listen to that nurse nor probably others who called in- - who were very worried about those contestants. Ignorance is no excuse, if they were holding this contest- - uhm- - how about knowing what the worst case scenario is!! So when she (or any contestant) complained about severe pain, they could have had emergency medical ready. I remember this. I thought it was just a tragic accident though. that no one ever thought about the idea that drinking too much water could hurt you. I remember the news (or at least, some of the news) acting like no one could have seen it coming and it was a big wake up call, something we'd have to keep in mind in the future. the fact that they actually had people calling in and telling them exactly what could happen, and they were dismissive of it, paints this in an entirely new light for me.

They actually replied "It's okay, they signed a waver!!!" They were actually so narcissistic that they they thought the caller was calling out of concern for the radio hosts!! I don’t know why but this story always illicits a strong involuntary feeling of dread and anxiety from me. I’m not implying that I’m somehow mentally channeling similar effects of water intoxication through osmosis (terrible pun not intended). This story is just tragic. I can’t imagine how her family must have felt, how SHE must have felt in the hours leading up to her untimely passing. Wanting to do something difficult and painful in order to bring a smile to her kids’ faces, not knowing the gravity of her mistake (the radio station’s mistake) until it was too late. I don’t blame her in the least bit though. It was 100% the responsibility of the radio station. They should have been made aware of the risks and canned it before they ever promoted it. I once heard a case in a hospital that a woman had arrhythmias and tachycardia. The only background was that she was doing a "Water diet" to lose weight. She said she drank like 20 litters of water the last day. This time the greatest problem wasn't the loss of Sodium, but instead of Potassium, which lead to many cardiac problems. Luckily this situation had a good ending, stabilizing her ions and everything ended up alright.

Most people have to force themselves to drink a fraction of the water humans need daily. You are supposed to get 80% of water from your food, but most women are dieting! There are literally alarms you can set to remind you to drink your water. I heard a cautionary tale of a teen who drank so much water (because she didn't want to get dehydrated from taking Ecstasy) that yes she died, so I learned to keep track of how much water I drank, which was alot, lol, and sorry for rambling on!

But it's pretty well known now that too much water is fatal (just like any other substance in too big amounts). I typically read the amount of 6 liters (though it's obviously somewhat individual and depends on other circumstances like how much electrolytes especially sodium one consumes). Too many runners died from electrolyte problems to make this even more well known but scientists knew about this thing before... It's sad people often don't learn this - though for most of us (I think) our body keeps us from being in danger. I am a very thirsty person but after some sane point I can't drink any more water. My throat may feel parched but my inside is hydrated and water is very off-putting. But as we know not everyone feels it this well or they still force it.

@shiNIN42
@shiNIN42 2 жыл бұрын
I've read 6 liters. It's just an approximate amount of course, it's not that clear but you don't need insane amounts to mess with your electrolyte balance. If it's proper electrolyte water (really, really salty, I couldn't drink that but some people are okay with it), it should be higher but we probably still can burden our body too much with some probably near impossible amount (except water torture done "well" I suppose)... But I don't really know about that. Once I fasted for 5 days out of curiosity. No sodium intake as I did nothing about electrolytes, it's not something school teach you and magazines are about other, more or less true things... My last 2 days were definitely odd and I strongly suspect it was due to electrolyte problems. And my body is pretty resilient regarding that, some people need to drink salty water all day just because they eat keto or fast just 16-20 hours a day! Or they get dizzy, that's a common symptom of lacking sodium.
