I love what you're doing here. I'd replace the nut and bridge and hope for the best.... This would be the first instrument I'd ever repaint....

Yeah, the nut and bridge do need help. The bridge itself is a disaster. The Tailpiece is a catastrophe. The cheap laminate top is a death sentence for a Mando, especially considering there are manufacturers with great laminate tops.

I traded web work for a Fender electic mandolin about 15 years ago and I still like it. I'm not a pro, so I don't really tear it up, but also not being a pro, I don't necessarily know what I'm doing and it still sounds good enough to me. (Not a pro mandolin player; played bass for money for a long time.) You can get a Fender used for $150 in the US. Not sure if that still counts as 'entry level.'

@@joeldcanfield_spinhead wow, then you got yourself a good deal! That's great. You don't need to be a too to fully enjoy playing music, and an instrument doesn't need to be sound like the best in the world to be acceptable. However, an instrument does need to be playable and the instrument in this video is absolutely not playable. A Fender mando is a fine instrument indeed.

@@MountainHomeJerrel Yeah, I was stunned that the strings were evenly spaced. Poor poor execution. While I paid money for a few of my instruments, most were in trade for web work (first, for a music store in San Diego, woohoo, then for various other folks.) I got a Yamaha classical piece of junk for 5 minutes of text editing, and these days it's a tenor guitar tuned an octave lower.

@@joeldcanfield_spinhead nice one! That will save you some money trading services. That's a good use for that guitar! I've got a scrap classical that I'm going to convert into a 12 string but I need parts from a 2nd guitar.

@@MountainHomeJerrel It did, before I retired a few years ago . . . curious about the neck of a classical supporting the stress of 12 strings. what kind of reinforcement do you have in mind?

@@joeldcanfield_spinhead I am going based on prior research of someone having added extra strings to a classical guitar. This person didn't report needed to add extra reinforcement for the neck, nor did he report any issues due to the added tension.
