He had kept the very strong Barkley sealed off with his right arm and shoulder, received the ball, pivoted and shot. Bird might have appeared to be, not so strong. and slow, but he was deceptively strong and quick handed and footed.

The reason why all 5 starters were double digit scorers is because Bird wanted it that way. They had issues with Fitch after the 1st one and got KC Jones because KC knew the deal. it was Bird's team. It's not just that he scored 60 points, it's the ridiculous shots he was making. He put on a clinic exactly what shots not to take.

I don't believe in having idols of any kind, but I was and still am a big fan of Wilt Chamberlain and Larry Bird. Even though I was only 6'3" at my tallest, I patterned my play after Wilt. That said, there is no other player I had rather watch play basketball than Larry Bird. He was phenomenal and more fun to watch than the Globe Trotters, while being as serious as a heart attack. For anyone who has watched him play, there is no need for me to go into details about what he could do on a basketball court.

❤Tiny❤ That bread and butter story made me snort laugh. Thanks for the best humor of this particular day! 😂❤😂 Red Auerbach statue FTW! ❤ I grew up in Massachusetts and then moved to Kansas. I can personally vouch that the blue-collar values of the East Coast are very much in line with those in the Midwest. I’m not surprised that Larry thrived so much in that environment. Sometimes now it seems players don’t come to play but they come for personal glory. Not all of them, obviously but definitely more than back in Larry’s day. I find your analysis very insightful and refreshing. Thanks so much! Yes that is how we dressed and looked in the Boston area in the 80s lol. Takes me back. ❤️ ❤Johnny Most❤ That wasn’t Dennis Johnson that was Cedric Maxwell #SixersHate lol

Commenting on this at ~ 17:00, Bird showing up to win, when other players showed up to play (even if it was playing their best): Bird doing whatever it took to win, especially keeping his whole team involved is why if you are drafting teams of all-time greats, the first player you take is Larry Bird, if you can. Other players are better at any one or two things, but Bird was excellent at everything. That's what made his fakes so effective, after all, because if your shooting's top-tier *as well as your passing*, the defender has to take any move to do either seriously. If a guy's a great shot and a good passer, you can defend the shot and take your chances, same goes for a good shot/great passer in that direction. If the threat's equal, you don't have a problem to solve, you are stuck in a dilemma. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, so what can you do? I think there's a good case to be made that Patrick Mahomes is the Larry Bird of the NFL, almost guaranteed to do something in every game that just blows you away, and just look at him rallying his players on the sideline, when needed. But maybe that's just me.

Larry Bird didn't play b-ball to bolster his stats , he played to win & done what ever it took to win , sometimes he never took a shot but he dominate the game with assists , his card was usually 25 points 15 rebounds 10 assists two blocks & one or two steals who else has done that every game , who has ever played 3 quarters of a game shooting with his off hand & score forty two points , three mvp's back , to back , back , Bird was the man

Great reaction-I learned some stuff. I went to a lot of these games and I don't think The debate about whether or not today's players could hang in the '80s is thought out or accurate. I think the big difference is that today's players don't spend their entire career on one team and so they trade in ball movement, hard defensive rebounds and ridiculous passing for endorsements and whatever team will give them. The Celtics today are a good example of it

There were two players in the eighties who were mirrors of each other. One played football, one basketball. Both were ridiculed for having no atheletic ability. They were supposidly bad passers. They played with backs so badly damaged that they would require spinal surgery. They both deeply, intensely hated losingbut neither cared about personal awards and accolades. They were simply born to be winners, and they both had that special 'something' that baffled everyone. They are Larry Bird and Joe Montana.

Growing up during Phys Ed in school. We were taught the game of bball,,that's the technically correct play...I always wondered why I hardly, if ever saw any other player in the NBA at the time follow thru and trail their shot, even back then. I'm a little tiny white girl, I legit had to chase my shots cuz it may not sink, but that was the fun in playing for me, I might dance it off the rim, but I ain't done yet, one missed basket ain't beat me, im coming at you for my redemption and self respect in a way. I mean, why play if you ain't all in, I believe that not playing like you mean it and half ass-ing your game is disrespectful to your opponents, especially in the NBA, it has to take the rush of real competition with serious players right the fuck out of the equation and why you play and love the game to begin with. The way you'd believe pros just do. I remember how I resented playing against teams with single celled, giggling amoebas , colonizing like bacteria on the court! Useless girls, not even trying to play. It's like when you're 7 or 8 years old and your mom is making you play t ball or some shit with your 3 year old brother before you bolt to hang with your friends and do stupid kid shit...a fate worse than death.
