In this video I bring you along as I swap out a leaking and cracked manifold on a 2008 Toyota Matrix 1.8 that is filling the cabin full of exhaust fumes. The car is pretty old and rotted so I use an aftermarket manifold (Dorman) and of course it doesn't fit like it should. I wouldn't expect any thing less. -Enjoy!

Evening Eric Just a quick thanks for all the great Video's you've done this year, you don't know how much you have helped a 60 year old Field Mechanic fixing Access Equipment last week. A 41 year old machine had its wiring mucked about with to fix a relatively simple fault by a so called electrician ( must have been a house hold one) . All the wiring was in the wrong place, burnt and corroded relays, insulation falling off. I spent 4 hours tidying it up literally so I could identify the wiring numbers, then managed to get a scanned copy of an old manual, all 5 pages of it. I was going to give up on it but thought start from the beginning. So rewired the whole thing from top to bottom with a new 42 core loom. 6 hours later all up and running. With a lot of by passed wiring back where it should be, and that's mostly because of you showing the diagnostic side of finding a fault. Anyway the main reason for this message is to wish you and Mrs O, and the children and the dog a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. All the best for 2022. Richard 🇬🇧

congrats on figuring out not all rust-proofing types are snake oil. also, for not falling for any of the snake oil ones! electronic gadgets, tar coatings and plenty of others are fully useless or would need factory applied during assembly and still fail due to heat/welding. the oil/wax/animal fat based coatings are about the only effective things on the market, even regular yearly oil sprays work, obviously some work well and last multiple years.

Despite our HEAVILY salted roadways in Ontario, a yearly trip to Krown and an annual coat of paste wax on the shiny side have kept the car as solid as new. The engine and manual transmission have been lubricated with Amsoil's top spec products since the first change interval and they are also factory fresh to this day.

I think you're the only mechanic I've ever heard talk so bad about dorman. I've used their products for years and never had an issue. They always improve over the oem stuff that's common to fail. And they make a lot of oddball parts that no other aftermarket company does which I really appreciate. Every part can and will fail. But I've never had a dorman part fail and I've used and installed thousands of parts from them. And sold thousands in the 12 years I've worked in the parts business. And I've been working on vehicles for 14 years.

Unfortunately I don't think anyone wants to make them here in North America so we are stuck with sketchy foreign quality. I was shocked at the Buick dealership years ago when the new suspension parts that they were putting on were make in Thailand and Vietnam

Kind of funny how up north a 12 year old car is ready for the crusher. In the south, you could put 1500 dollars in it and go another 2 to 3 hundred thousand. miles. Different climates, different life choises. My newest car is 2003 Corolla with over 250,000 miles on it, and it is going strong. Not much need in replacing a car when you only have to replace a defective part occasionally, and keep its maintenance up. Great video Mr. O. Thanks.

If you rust proof them every year they can go forever. I had a Honda civic last 23 years here in salty road Canada.

@@1232bluejays That doesn't surprise me much dave. The key is maintenance. Even in Fla, you don't drice the car on the beach unless you are prepared to do a lots of cleaning rinsing, and rustproffing. LOL My pld 1999 silverado was a rustbelt special, but with tlc, and a little elbow grease it's got over 360,000 miles on it and going strong. KZfaq has good vids on how to rustproof, and repair vehicles.

I had about the same milage on my 06 Matrix when the stock exhaust manifold started leaking from cracks. Was prepared to put a Dorman cast-iron Chineseum replacement, but decided against after reading the bad reviews regarding fit and finish. Pulled it, welded the cracks and put her back in.......that was 40K miles ago, no problems since.

Ps- Dorman has both saved me and ruined me. Dormans saving grace as of late is a AC flow sensor they make that Toyota doesn’t make on its own as a standalone part. The flow sensor goes bad on some of their compressors - it only needs that sensor to fix the problem. Toyota dealers will charge for an entire compressor job instead of just replacing the bad sensor. The sensor is 50$ from Dorman and is only held on by a c-clip. The compressor job is 500$ bare minimum.
