I just have a small backyard garden that I really enjoy. Take care and stay safe! Donna

“Failure is just a steppingstone to success” - so TRUE! I realized that this year I started waaay too many seedlings of a lot of things. I’ve pulled out several things because I needed the room for something else and I knew I wouldn’t use the plant. I also found out that tomatoes need a LOT more room than I realized. So it’s always a learning experiment. I’ll do better next year, for sure. Yes, I kind of felt bad about “wasting” food and not being aware of what I didn’t know. It’s okay. I’m learning. Thanks for the message, Jill! I appreciate your clarity and honesty.

Wow, I thought that you were never supposed to dry herbs in a sunny window. All of my herb books (and professionals I've listened to) say that it destroys the color and flavor. Thank you for the pep talk today. I think that the flack people give are because they're afraid of "failure." Something I learned a while ago, I learned from Adam Savage and the Mythbusters. "Failure is always an option." Over the years that has morphed into "Failure is just another word for iteration. If something doesn't work, we learn and try again. I actually learn more from not really succeeding than I do from success. ALWAYS BE OPEN TO LEARNING.

Long time gardener here and my experience in situations like that is that ripping out the plant doesn’t always solve the issues. Usually they will persist throughout the season. If I were growing to sell, I would just step up my control methods to get the most off that crop and prevent the problem from spreading. Then make a note to not grow that crop again or if I decide to grow it again, locate it in a spot where the chances of any problems spreading would be less. I always “trial” new varieties in a separate garden from my main garden just to prevent this situation. During the off season is the time to address your pest issues by working beds and looking for larva that are over wintering, adding a biodiverse compost and letting the soil rest while keeping it covered.

Yes!!! I feel like the "failure" (which I like to call "lessons learned") is necessary and unavoidable! People get so discouraged in gardening so quickly without realizing how many variables go into it, a lot of them out of their control. But once you figure them out...there's that pivoting moment of success afterwards and it's glorious!!

I would have dug them up and moved them into containers put them on edge of property where they wouldn't infest other plants. I use need oil, omni approved, with a little bit of peppermint brothers to prevent and treat white mold. I know from personal experience when you grow indoors and tunnels air flow, wind can prevent pests or mold from forming. I love pest resistant varieties, so important. I've noticed hybrid varieties get more pests or mold over heirloom varieties.

Jill I had the pleasure of meeting you at the Farm Where You Live event in Asheville. After meeting you though it was brief, you struck me as a person who does what's best for you and your family. I totally agree with ripping those cucumbers out. Building soil health is way more important than what money you might have made off of those cucumbers. Because the amount of money you would have had to spend on getting your soil back healthy not to mention the time and effort. I say kudos to you for making a smart decision!! I would like to ask if you have ever grown the Mercury cucumber?? It is prolific as well but mine are close together and they are rocking it with no pest or disease. It is going to be a variety I will grow from now on. It also has a thinner skin and my husband can eat them, with out burping them afterwards.

The problem with todays society is the "failure is not an option" attitude that has permeated every part of the economic system. that attitude overflows into peoples non work life. I'm trying to figure out how to earn money but I refuse the contract idea. On a contract, you must fulfill it at any cost. If I have something to sell, I'll put it up for sell. If I don't, don't demand it! I work with what nature gives me and not more.

I hate that you feel you need to justify what you do in your own garden! Do you know what’s best for your own spaces there!
