Native plants are particularly good draws for beneficial insects. I planted some ox-eye sunflower and purple coneflower in my garden and I’ve noticed much more lady bug activity around them than my traditional non-native landscape plants

I’ve had good luck deterring cabbage moths with an onion spray. Just chop onions, put them in water and allow them to steep for a few hours. Strain the liquid through a cheesecloth or coffee filter, and fill a spray bottle with the onion water. Spray directly on and around your brassicas, repeating after rain.

I need to try this! My brassicas have been fighting for their lives! I've been alternating DE,BT and neem and it seems to be helping some. A few years ago I had a couple of tomato horn worms on what few tomatoes I planted and I used a garlic spray and never had another one. I burned some of the leaves though.

I’m having the issue of moles/voles wiping out my beautiful planted spaces.. it’s never ending. But I go to Lowe’s every week and hit up the clearance section and bring some plants home half price and revive them to put in place of the mole/vole damage.. I understand the pain of all that hard work and hope for blooms/food and then it’s all gone instantly.. replant and give it a second chance!

GRATZ Jill on your monumental achievement. Hat tip to you. My biggest issue being in the PNW are gigantic slugs and snails as well as ants. I have found the marigolds which I now seed start in mass to inter-plant amongst my entire garden aids greatly in slug control. For the ants i use borax, sugar and water in a plastic bottle in which I create tiny holes in one side for ants…then i simply lay it on its side and i can say last year all the bottles were loaded with earwigs and ants and not on my plants. I simply dispose of the bottle at season’s end and refresh for the next season of growing. It worked beautifully as well. I also use DTE throughout my garden but having to reapply after every rain, esp here, became too much of chore early in the season when its wetter. As i move into dryer months i resume using it. I want to try your peppermint oil remedy this yr to add to my arsenal of pest deterrents. Organic takes lots more time and care but is truly worth the extra gardening effort in healthy benefits to humans and is safe to use around pets.

How much borax, sugar and water do you use? I have lots of ants and earwigs and it's driving me bonkers! I'm pretty sure ants are gnawing on my strawberries. I saw a few on one one day. I'm confused about how you make holes in the bottle.

ANTS! I can't believe how many ants we have this year. Truly being overrun in our raised beds and in ground. A combination of very tiny ants and regular sized ants. MIgardener recommended 1 part sugar, 1 part borax, and just enough water to make a paste, then soak with cotton balls and place at the ants hills fir yhem to transport thru the nest to the queen. So yesterday, I did that, making about a cup+ of it and soaking 15 cotton balls. I placed the ball in as many places as i could find ant hills or very heavy trails. Today, I was shocked to see most of the ants were gone. I dont know if they died, moved or went deeper into the ground, but they are mostly gone. I will continue doing this regularly and hope its the natural magic bullet. Tonight its suppose to rain so I am going to pick up the cotton balls, resoak, and put out again after the rain.

Thanks Jill for reminding me about the essential oils, I had a fits all over my baby rose bushes, never seen it before, but I didn’t like seeing them on my roses 🌹 I will be using the peppermint oil and the dish soap the next round. Hopefully it won’t be one.👌🏾✨

Congratulations on your certification! Something I am trying this year to deter pests is thai (holy) basil. I noticed last year when I planted one in a bed of tomatoes, I had no pests! The other tomato beds...not so much. It has a much stronger smell than most basil varieties, and I love it! So I started a ton of thai basil and have it planted in every single bed and so far, so good! Too bad I didn't think to plant some in my Greenstalk because I saw aphids on my parsley today.

When it comes to aunts I found that charcoal is perfect it gets rid of them ASAP. It doesn't kill them but it makes them move out of where you don't want them. I found that out by accident when I had a 50 gallon drum half barrel and I wanted to plant in there but there was a massive and I made a massive fire ant colony in it and I have some charcoal right by me LOL I threw it in there and walked away thinking I Was Defeated and on the whole of them days they were out of there as a matter fact I think all insects in the dirt we're gone except maybe a spider

Great Tips! Thank you! I hang bird feeders during the winter filled with black sunflower seeds only near my gardens and am blessed to have birds hanging out year round eating seed when there are no bugs and then bugs when there’s no seed. I just watched some cow birds fly into my potato patch and come out with something that they immediately took into the old dead tree on my property - chirping baby birds are loud. 😊 Occasionally I get a random sunflower growing too!

Very good info! I think I'll try the peppermint oil. I've had a lot of pests. Slugs and ants are the visible ones but there are things getting gnawed on by who knows what. I've been alternating DE, BT and neem oil and things seem to be getting better. Why don't you grow anything in the beautiful raised bed garden?

I also implement trap crops. You can put let's say eggplant to attract flea beetle to keep them off other things. Unless you are really wanting those eggplant lol.

I'm having slugs on my brassicas. Do you just sprinkle it around the plant? I've been using DE, BT and neem at different times and it seems to be helping. I've just been alternating what I'm using.
