Josiah Marlow because I have been up front and personal with this very situation. I love my Marine Corps, but I am very realistic about the upper echelons. It’s going to take a lot more than a PSA to solve this crisis. Follow through is needed. Marines are being stretched thinner and thinner. I wish you luck sir. I hope you make the Corps even better. Remember that leading Marines is an honor and a privilege. An officer must serve his Marines as much as they serve him. “Rank has no privileges, only responsibilities.” - Brigadier General Evans Carlson

@@milesmayhem5440 Thanks for the support, Sgt. People like you are the foundation of the Corps. I have quite a few friends on the enlisted side, active and prior. I can only hope to make y'all proud at some point. Some hated it, some loved it, one is trying to get back in through OCS. Guess it's different for everyone. Good luck. Semper Fi.

KZfaq is really a horrible platform for putting out a message or a political message. But the marine corps and the other branches utilizing social media as a tool to help reach out and do all sorts of stuff is amazing considering how easy it is to relay information.

Rank, age, nationality, doesnt matter. I dealt with two attempted suicides in the Marines as an NCO and its not pretty. Even after Marines leave active duty they continue struggling. Unfortunately, it will take more lives lost to fix this problem. -high divorce rates -cheating spouses -hazing -ptsd -long hours, weekends, holidays, deployments, duty -barracks life is terrible -food is terrible I know some will say “well you signed up for this” ,but do you really want to draft people who don’t want to be there at all? Every time someone says “suck it up” when a Marine really needs some help they are turning their back on a brother/sister.

Marines do care care of their own. A few years ago I was on vacation with my family. We stopped at a rest stop for a short while and I was checking the oil and washer fluid in our vehicle. I noticed a truck pull up in front of me and the guy driving was staring at me. He walked up to me an asked if I needed some help. I said no sir just checking the oil. He asked me when I was in. I was puzzled then looked at the back window on his truck and saw a USMC decal. Then I realized I had a MARINES shirt on that my father, a Marine, had given me. Semper Fi Marines.

It's all well and good for the top brass to pontificate about how "caring" they are when a Marine (or sailor or soldier or airman) is having a problem. It isn't necessarily the Marine Corps itself that doesn't care about these types of things like depression. It's the units and those within the leadership of the units. Generals care. Colonels care. Does 2ndLT care? Does Staff Sergeant care? Hell, does your Corporal care? Do they try to understand what is going on or do they shove a Page 11 down your neck because "you are failing to perform" or whatever reason they can think of? Do they sit you down, take off the chevrons and say "What's on your mind" or will they chew your ass obnoxiously in front of everyone because you aren't putting in full energy when you were a week ago or two days ago? When I was in, this was a big part that I saw with a lot of different people in a lot of different units. I understand that we need strong bodied warriors with strong minds but you can't fight a battle outside when you have your own battles you are trying to win and it doesn't help when you are mentally exhausted and your NCO is chewing your ass because "you are a fucking piece of shit Marine that can't do anything right" when you were a model Marine last month.

Reality is.... there’s a few marines I trust, and unfortunately none of them are the leadership. It’s driven by institutionalized rules where ncos seem to care more about their fitrep more than their own Marines. All they see is that E-3 and below on your collar and assume that you’re just a piece of shit but little do they know is that we’ve been for years too and have things to offer to the table if they give us a chance to show it to them. Depending on the time you’re in determined when and how fast you promote and because we didnt promote as fast as them ,thus “we must be not as good as them”.They call us sensitive when we won’t take the hazing and when that happens they are the ones getting butthurt. They are more concerned about their ego than the welfare of their marines. It seems as if they only ask if we need help when the command instructs them to, but by that time we’ve already lost trust in them because of the uncomfortable work environment that was created by them. We could be in a shit ass environment with each other but if we have trust in our leadership, then that is exactly what I signed up for. It takes a tougher individual to stand up to leadership like that because we’re taught to respect and fear our NCOs most of the times. This results in the junior enlisted and some NCOs who get the shit end of the stick to rely on each other to “survive”, which is sad tbh. It should be the leadership that suffer along with us. Not use us to make their lives easier.

I saw that too when I was in, that's why when I became an NCO, I was always there for my Marines...... Whether it was work related or something they were going through personally...... Sometimes all it takes it time to sit down and listen to what they have to say...... It could be the difference between them making the right or wrong decision on their free time

I’ve felt the same way. Ive only been in a short while, but I’ve got more deployment time under my belt than most junior corpsman who’ve been in as long, if not longer, than I have. I trusted the leadership I deployed with. My intelligence was never insulted, I was never treated as lesser, and I trusted leadership enough to call them brothers. When I came time to embrace the suck, we had each other’s backs and got through whatever Hell navy had to through at us. Can I say the same about my shore command? Well, can’t say I’m not relieved to be deploying again very soon.

You sound just like I did back when I was an E4 in 2007. You're gonna have a bad time. As long as you keep hanging onto that garbage attitude and hefty sense of entitlement. If you're blaming everyone else you aren't going to grow. Have some humility, look at yourself and make change happen. Quit blaming your leadership and authority figures...hell, I bet you did the same thing with your parents.

WTF this man reminds me of the top sergeant that ran our company office in Nam . I would never guess this man would be the Commandant of the Corp . He looks like he may well have PTSD himself and I don't mean that to be disrespectful . I've heard that the suicide's are way up . If anyone is thinking of going into the military ask what the reason is for the particular assignments . And don't settle for short answers that leave no room for a conversation . Marines were and are assigned to ships which I've heard is no piece of cake being around alot of sailors . Also they can be deployed to Afghanistan , Iraq , parts of Africa and all for no particularly good reason . If we were attacked I would sign up in a heart beat . I won't fight for a corporation . And that's why too many Marines are taking their live's imo because they can't live with the decisions they made . Remember you are their's once your in , they own you and saying no becomes very difficult !

What the corps or I’m sure any branch won’t tell you is that when you do seek help you’re forced out ASAP because you are now not considered mission ready. It’s much easier and cheaper to send a marine home than give them the help they need.
