Happy New Year! What are you doing for your bullet journal setup in 2021?

I plan month by month. As one month comes to an end, then I set up my next month. I'm definitely not someone who plans their bullet journal for the year.

I couldn't do it either. I'm too indecisive and my schedules and needs fluctuate.

i love how you addressed how journals have to be flexible, depending on the progress you have or how the set up really worked for you for a time being.. so happy with that ❤ i mean i wanted to do journal back then but i didnt like the idea of having to set it up for the entire year coz it might not work for me later on, which was what happened..

Absolutely agree. In year 2022 now. What I have learnt, for my future log, I do not even want to do in the bullet journal anymore. Life changes too fast. The monthly / weekly & daily log / collections is more than enough.

Yay to 2021! Planning out a new year is a ritual I enjoy, and I’ve simplified mine this year and embraced some of the Nice to Have, but not essential lists (futures log and assorted lists) to the back - as you recommended. It’s definitely lovely to get straight to January at the start. Last years journal had a lot of goal planning at the start... although that all went to hell with COVID, and my journal took on more of a journaling role as my anxieties increased. So with this habit formed, I did my January monthly log, monthly tasks, I’ve introduced a weekly task list of areas of focus (thanks for that)... but then just followed with Friday 1st for my first daily log entry - end of pre-planning, allowing a day-to day space for brain dumping and planning of each day (my daily morning ritual as I wait for the water to boil for my cup of tea). I also appreciate a space to dump a thought throughout the day, an emotion, an event. I also supplement with calendar, reminder, note apps as my secondary brain.

Thanks for this! Your set-up is truly minimal and seems to work so well for you. My set-up has a simple future log for Feb21-Jan22, reading list and a few pages for a running diary. And that's it! After these I'm ready for the January monthly spread (much like yours, but with weekly tasks included) and rolling dailies. My dailies can be anything from 0 lines to 2 pages, I can't set them up beforehand like you do. So I just make use of my future log and migrate to monthlies when it's time to set them up. It's great how we can all adjust the bujo method as it best suits us. Hoping for a peaceful and productive year for you!

Cheers to a good and healthy 2021!!!! I love this idea. I used to do the whole year in advance but now like you say I’m stating small with only one week and day at a time, and that’s ok.

Avoiding set up is why I like the Rhodia goals book. The perpetual calendar and future log are already printed and then I just freestyle my way through the rest of the book

Great video! Ive been bullet journaling for a few years now. I use google calendar to sync with hubby's calendar and future log in there. I have a heard time sticking to the future log in a bullet journal. With that said I definitely do weekly layouts and daily layouts. Most the time weekly. I do go back and forth with the layout of the weekly spreads though.

I tried a major layout for 2021 and 2022 because i needed to put something related to 2021 last year and wasnt able to do 😂. Something that works for me is that I keep all my "miscellaneous" speads in the back of my bullet journal or else it will be "mixed up" with my monthly spreads. For example, a spread about books i want to read goes in the back of my bujo as this is not necessarily linked to a specific month / year. This way I could get back to it the next year snd that way it won't be forgotten. Ah i don't use an index in my bujo.. never been a fan of!

I follow the original method and I don't set up even the week in advance as it constrains the daily logs. The "variable length" daily log is one of the main advantages of BUJO imo.

Hi Matt, really enjoying your videos. Im struggling to get BuJo off the ground however. I want to use BuJo to also do goal setting for the year. Im bot sure how to set and track goals, especially aspects of goals that are required on a daily/weekly basis.

I have never seen anyone put more than one monthly in their journal at a time (a whole year? who does that?). Even here, where do you put the other monthly pages? Since dailies take a variable amount of space, you have to thread like crazy if you put in a monthly ahead of time -- Feb monthly will either be right in the middle of january dailies, or there will be feb dailies before the monthly.

This is the most "ahead" planning I have ever seen. I've never actually seen anyone plan a whole year from the get go. I don't think most people setup more than a month at a time. The original Bullet Journal system doesn't do any setup ahead of time.

Ryder Carroll actually advises against early set up other than the future log. I agree with you in your statements.

Curious take. In the intro and, indeed, throughout most of this video Matt explains the need for embracing flexibility, starting small and growing slowly. Multiple times he argues against planning more than 3 months ahead. One instance, starting at 3:36, Matt explains he starts new journals with layout for the first 1 or 2 months “but no more than 3 months at a time.” Which video did you watch? 🤔
@alexreith4877
@alexreith4877 3 жыл бұрын
Brian Richards I watched the same video that you watched. Three months in advance is more than I've ever seen anyone setup. Like I said, most people don't even set up a whole month at a time, so it was weird that he said some people think they need to setup a whole year from the beginning.

@@alexreith4877 I only set up the monthly spread and todays daily log. In the beginning of a new year, there is a bit more. I like to have a "books read" collection for example in the first pages. This year, I had a whole month where I actually didn't write anything down - those pages would be lost if I had planned them ahead. I like to use the original system, add my collections in the beginning (books, films etc) and the dailies come as they come. 😁
@joycehuff9769
@joycehuff9769 3 жыл бұрын
@@rzenmedia it is true that anyone can set up however they like but the bullet system by Ryder was intended to not have a long set up far ahead. Future log is designed for that. If you read Ryders book he thoroughly explains why it’s not a great idea. Again though, everyone can do their own way
