A Modal Lyric Romanza interrupted by Brutal Viking Blues.
The modes and scales in use are written above the keyboard. And small dots show the scales on the keys.
Title: Viking Blues Romanza
Bass: Fabricio Pereira
Drums: Erik Frandsen
Piano: Oliver Prehn

Why "Viking" Blues? Well, I'm a Scandinavian, so the 'real' original blues is not in my veins. But instead I can play a viking version of the blues ;)
Many warm regards from Oliver Prehn

Thank you so much to Fabricio Pereira (bass) and Erik Frandsen (drums). Please check out Fabricio’s awesome channel 'Fosmea': kzfaq.info In the A-section of this song I use a pentatonic hand grip to play all the 7 Modes. In this lesson I explain the technique in use kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hsWGp8mB0bW3Z3k.html In the B-section we play brutal Viking Blues LOL. Well, I'm a Scandinavian, so the 'real' original blues is not in my veins I suppose. But instead I can play the Viking Blues ;) Many warm regards from Oliver Prehn

Jazz is an expression of personal achievement. It is intellectual and spiritual athleticism combined with grace of perception. Jazz is a form so deep and inclusive that it sucks into itself all the world’s music and sublimates them into an idiom that blends blues and improvisation. A practitioner of jazz is much like a yogi or monk who undertakes a life of contemplation. When musicians arrive together to make music they bring their valise of masteries, their real and fake books, their tools and tuners. Nowadays we have no guides except jazz musicians. The world may not know this. But WE do.

Hey mr. Oliver prehn ... I'm a bass player and am currently struggling with my improvisation... it would be awesome if you could make a video about using scales and modes for underlining the chord changes in soloing and the the scale exercises that will help when doing so..... the chart you uploaded in the scale family list video really helped me out alot and it would be great if you used the scales in it.. i know you're probably working on the next video... And I'd greatly appreciate it if you could make a video about what i explained earlier, in the near future..... thank you...... awesome song by the way 😃

Oliver, this is not a comment on the piece now playing but a general question. I thought asking it by leaving a comment on your latest video might get you to see it. I realise not all jazz pieces (or for that matter classical and other pieces) are in 4/4 (though pop seems addicted to it) but why is 4/4 SO pre-dominant? 3/4 sometimes gets a look-in (and when I often set the tempo to 3/4 for some of the (pitiful) tracks I record (though sadly not yet in piano which I why I have subscribed and follow you here), but SO often it is 4/4. Why? If one of our intentions when producing music is to engage and interest (and perhaps even intrigue) listeners, abandoning 4/4 for something else would prove useful. PS Earlier I watched your video on your tips for playing free jazz - A C D E G etc - and that has intrigued me and I'm now off to give it a whirl. Thanks.
@NewJazz
@NewJazz 2 жыл бұрын
That's a really good question. Some years ago I made some Music together with my father Tom Prehn in 5/4 and with the subdivisions in 5/16 - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d657ptqCptiqmGg.html - That was crazy - in the start almost impossible - but you get used to it along the road. So the answer about 4/4 must be: "CONVENTIONS" - so many things are controlled by conventions ;) So feel free to break free ;) Cheers from Oliver
