The first time my friend Italiansupercarvideo and I saw and recorded this beast was during a rainy qualifying session at Imola Circuit back in 2018. After that, we managed to record it at two editions of the Dix Mille Tours at Circuit Paul Ricard but last weekend, our 4th time, we decided to try to ask to get some on board footage. The coincidence is that this time the Chevy Monza was in Monza, for the 2020 edition of the Monza Historic weekend by Peter Auto.
The car in this video, built and driven by Gilles Ceron of Vintage Garage, is a recreation of the Chevrolet Monza DeKon IMSA (chassis 1006) that took part at the 1976 Le Mans 24h driven by Michael Keyser and Eddie Wachs. Starting from the chassis of a rusty 1975 Chevrolet Monza, Gilles and the guys of his company modify it in order to be suitable to house all the necessary components and be approved to obtain the FIA and FFSA passport.
For the engine they went for a Chevrolet 5.7-litre V8 engine linked to a 5-speed transmission. In the past this engine had Hendrick Motorsport valve covers so it could be a Nascar Chevrolet SB2 engine, able to produce almost 800hp, but I'm not 100% sure about this. What I'm definitely sure is that it really sounds like a Nascar race car!

I watched GM unload three of these Monzas at Road Atlanta in 1976 for the IMSA race. They were body-in-white versions with just the numbers 1-2-3 on their respective doors. Porsche was the brand to beat at that event and the Monzas beat them like dogs and sounded fantastic doing it. I still get chills thinking about it. Thanks for the flashback.

@Stance1988 common misconception. Porsche is only the "brand to beat" because usually there are 10x more of them on the field than every other car.. go look at all Porsche le man's wins and a decent percent come from when other manufacturers weren't even competing. Yes Porsche makes great competitive cars but they aren't "the brand to beat"

@johnz4860 3 жыл бұрын
@@atomic.universe Some will never have an iota of character even if they live to be 120, while others have loads of it . You either have it or you don't. Character, rareness, desirebility, beauty all determine whether a car will be a future classic. I seriously doubt a Citroen C3 Cactus, for instance will ever be a sought-after classic, while a Bugatti 57 Atlante has been a timeless classic even before rolling out of the assembly line.

The new GT3 Corvette for IMSA next year has a 5.5L NA V8 making 600hp (capped by regulations) with 70% production parts. Apparently these Monzas made about 600-650 so not far off. I don’t think stock parts are for sustainability, it’s to keep the cars relatively similar to their road-going versions, and limit costs.
