This disturbing film tells the inside story of a mother, Terri Milbrandt, who pretended her daughter had cancer and appealed to her close- knit community for help to pay the medical bills. Seven-year-old Hannah had her head shaved and was given sleeping pills by her mother. It seems that when she awoke she was told she had had chemotherapy. Her teachers arranged counselling for Hannah to prepare her for her death and when she visited Santa she asked to be spared. But there was no cancer and there were no medical bills. Now that close-knit community wants justice and a jury must decide whether they were the victims of a sadistic fraud.
This film talks exclusively to Bob Milbrandt, Hannah's father, who is standing trial for conspiracy to the crimes of theft, child endangerment and felonious assault, and to Hannah's grandmother who is also standing trial for theft. Friends, fundraisers and police investigators reveal how it took nine months to discover the story was false.

Olivia Parsons. What I had was what I called THE HATE LOVE RELATIONSHIP. I loved my mother cuz she was my mother, but I couldn't stand her for what she allowed to let happen to me. At her end I had no feelings for her. I was still her slave, except I was no longer sleeping w/her husband (4-14 yo). Something I also still can't do is forgive. They're both dead, but I still can't forgive. 😿😾

@czarmayne
@czarmayne 5 жыл бұрын
I related to having no feelings in the end. I am Hannah just not in that scale. You love your mother ‘cause you’re a child but when you realize what has been happening as you grow old, you just lose not just love but respect and everything. In the end, just nothing. It’s not a matter of forgiveness or whatever. It is what it is.
@obnoxiousbluebird6634
@obnoxiousbluebird6634 5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it's not a matter of forgiving someone to give yourself peace, some people truly should not have forgiveness imo. It's a matter of letting go, even if that means getting to a point where you don't just have no love you have no hate either, you just let it all go. Sometimes that's the healthier option, it all depends on the person, the events and the belief system. I'm trying very hard to be respectful to Apphia Az and their faith, but I have to say Kricket Langendoerfer has survived a horrific childhood and come out the other side, they don't need to ask anyone or anything to GIVE them strength, they've already got a ton of it!

Bunker Sieben - I have a degenerative neurological disorder and it causes extreme pain. One of the few things that helps me to still walk with crutches is getting spinal injections every other week. Without them, I need my wheelchair almost every day. With them, I use it maybe once a month. Last year, my insurance refused to cover them because there’s no evidence that they help. I’ve had them done for years now and every time we’ve tried to reduce frequency, I’ve been right back in a wheelchair. My doc helped as much as he could, making zero profit off any visit I had that year (28 appointments), but my family was still paying $450 per month for the treatment. This was on top of massive other bills. Finally starting on Medicare likely helped save my family from bankruptcy.

The community helped me so much, example, driving from our home to St Judes every week a stranger I never met paid to put tires on my car, and almost 30 years later I'm still grateful. Please don't stop helping out. You'll let these horrible people continue to hurt families who really need help. Praise God, my daughter survived Glioblastoma multiforme( not sure I've spelled that correctly). Brain tumor in right parietal lobe. No Chemo, only surgery and radiation, at that time and maybe now chemo wouldn't pass the blood brain barrier.

C Nonya Right??? Not to mention finding out that your parents did this to you would be extremely traumatic. She is going to suffer, mentally, for the rest of her life because of this. She'll definitely have trust issues and severe anxiety and depression, if not full blown PTSD.

+C Nonya-Not only what Sam said but apparently, her mother took it so far that Hannah was put into therapy sessions to cope with the fact she was going to die. . .They put a little child. . .into therapy. . .because she believed she was going to die. . .That is just SICK. Poor Hannah has confirmed that she has suffered from a tremendous amount of issues over the ordeal. She has been depressed almost her entire life now, to where she developed depression at 12 and even suicidal thoughts. . .Thankfully and mercifully, she has never acted on them, but the duress of that depression and suicidal thoughts were probably never go away. . .And while this wasn't confirmed, it is possible Hannah does suffer some kind of PTSD (crying in her sleep, agitation, flashbacks/nightmares, etc.) over what happened and always will. This is not something anyone can ever fully recover from, let alone someone who was forced, by their own mother, to go through this at a mere 7 years old. But thankfully and pretty miraculous, it seems Hannah has found her way to find a way to live her own life-she does suffer quite a bit and knows she probably always will from what happened-but she looks to have turned into a pretty wonderful young woman.

I was a seriously sick child from age 5 onwards, with diagnosis given when I was 7. There's zero chance that my father wouldn't have known if I hadn't been sick for real. Sick children display symptoms at home, too. Children that are not sick aren't capable of pretending to be sick 24/7 even if one parent claims they are sick and coaches the child into pretending. It's just not possible to be clueless about something like that if you live in the same house, even if you work long hours.

In 2010 after Teresa (Terri) Milbrandt spent 6.5 years in prison for this case, she was arrested again nine months after her release from prison for prescription fraud. One of her other daughters was also arrested with her. Together, they forged prescriptions in July, August and October to get pain pills at a Walmart Pharmacy in Springfield. Also her husband Robert served 2.8 years of a 4 yr 11 m sentence for his role, and Terri's mother was acquitted.

The sickest part was the child going to counseling to prepare for her death. I imagine that counseling would be helpful for a child who actually will be dying young. How in the world could you put your child thru that when it was so unnecessary? The psychological trauma of preparing for death as a child when she didn't even need that. Ugh.

Wow! I googled this family, this story doesn’t end here! Terry the mom went to prison for 6 1/2 years for her crimes against Hannah, theft and fraud. Then in 2010 she was involved in a drug scam involving her older daughters!! Apparently, Katie 27, was a medical assistant, who forged prescriptions for Vicodin, and had her mom pick up the drugs, which were shared between her mom and two sisters!! I can’t find out if she went to jail for that too? It was proven that she did not have munchausen by proxy syndrome. Which made sense when it came out that she’d been in prison in 1989 for bank fraud! What a POS!! Bob the father, spent 4 years 11 months in prison for scamming the town. He maintains his innocence and that he didn’t know Hannah wasn’t sick. The grandmothers charges were dropped. Hannah spent a year in foster care & then went to live with her aunt (on her fathers side), until her father was released when she was 15. At that point she lived with her father (who she feels didn’t know), until she was 18. What really infuriated me was how her father said that Hannah wasn’t hurt by anything the mother did!! Down playing the fact that she drugged his daughter!! Saying it was just Benadryl!! He comes off as such as idiot here!! His daughter was told she was going to DIE at 7 years old!! Her hair was shaved!! She had to wear a mask!! She wasn’t allowed to play with her friends!! He’s super lucky that his daughter forgave him!! Well he was wrong... because Hannah says that she’s still dealing with this at 21 (the interview was done in 2017). She struggled with depression at 12, and had suicidal thoughts! Poor girl!! Hannah is studying social work at university and wants to help foster kids. She moved back to Ohio and occasionally runs into her mom on the road. She’s terrified of Teresa and feels her mother will try and deny what she did! Despite what she’s been put through it seems Hannah is doing pretty well, and she’s blossomed into a beautiful young woman. God bless her.

Don't be too quick to denounce the father. My ex-wife tried that same thing with our first child and it worked for a short time on me with much less serious medical conditions. Newly married at age 22 I had only 30 days that entire year I didn't go to work. I thought our baby was just very prone to every allergy and every cold virus that existed!!! It changed when I was working at the home of an allergy specialist and told him these tests are costing between $500-$1200 every couple months and I was barely keeping myself above water financially. He "offered" to give us a free consultation if we wanted and I jumped at the chance. Immediately my wife became very skeptical. I kept insisting we go to him at least once since it's free and she kept preventing it and we never went. Our child suddenly stopped getting sick and seemed perfectly normal. It was years later I learned about Munchausen syndrome by proxy and I told her about it and she shrugged it off. Fortunately neither of our children had any other medical issues but she did end up having serious mental issues a decade later and still to this day.

After having my daughters best friend diagnosed with brain cancer at 13 yrs old I just can not wrap my head around this. Praise God she is now 23 yrs old but that diagnosis at such a young age affects all the children who love the child sick. Going to hospital to see her was extremely hard for my daughter. So this doesnt just affect Hannah. Those children that love Hannah lost a piece of their innocents as well.

He didn't know anything was wrong until he was arrested. You have to understand how people like Terri manipulate others, and if you still think it's bullshit, then you must be a manipulator just like her. My mother manipulated my dad, aunts and grandparents for years about my health and mental state. My father hated doctors, and my grandparents didn't believe in medications. My grandparents were the ones who found my mother out and uncovered her game and had me removed from her "care".

I have had chronic health problems since I was 5 and my dad rarely would go to the hospital with me whenever I broke something (brittle bones), and my issues were real. Apparently he has had very bad associations with hospitals (from when his dad passed, I know he was absolutely devastated.) Lots of people have phobias, so I wouldn't automatically jump to him being a bad father because of this.

Unlikely she would have gone as far as murder. Violent, psychotic behaviour is atypical of compulsive liars. It’s far more likely she would have said the treatment was successful. Carrying out and getting away with murder can be overwhelmingly complicated; lying is far more practical.

@@majormana1 my grandmother had this. She was never diagnosed. They lived in a small town where you ask no questions, and ignore what you may suspect. My aunt was so abused, she has blocked memories up until she was 11. She also abused her own self sooo it wasn't just by proxy with her. She lived with me a while and actually put her own eye out, poked herself up the rear with a sharp object to cause severe bleeding, and sliced open her palm for medical attention and church sympathy. Thankfully, she died a few years back. Unfortunately, it was from leukemia and her family wasn't there for her because of all the things she did. None of us went to her funeral and we don't know who ended up with her ashes.

He tried to arrange to attend medical appointments but they would always be conveniently cancelled or rescheduled. When a kid is sick, most people wouldn't automatically suspect it's fake. He likely trusted his wife. Hannah doesn't believe he had anything to do with it.

This isn't that uncommon. Being around people who have gone through cancer it doesn't always include bills. a lot of the times the medical clinics will go out of their way to enlist the help of drug manufacturers. and you don't actually notice the port. What struck me as odd is the port doesn't have to have a bandage to cover it. It's just under the skin. If he didn't bathe her, he wouldn't know. The other side of that is. I don't show my husband all my bills or script bottles. It would be incredibly easy for a well loving father to not pay attention if he trusted his wife. I would have to say the dad may have thought odd things but would he actually think his wife was an abuser? that would be hard to accept

She drugged her daughter--so once awakened from a stupor, she was told 'you just had chemo.' Mom goes to jail for 6.5years. The consequences this child will endure, throughout her lifetime, must not have been considered, during sentencing. I believe Grandma is innocent. Dad? He NEVER once insisted on going as a family to the doctor or hospital or chemo session? Pretending he's innocent, he's a LOSER as a father.

John Puryear if he was working, he would probably never insist. My dad has never been to the doctor with me. Not when I ran a fever as an infant, not when I got a concussion when I was 6, not when I got pneumonia when I was 9 or 10, not ever, and I've been in quite a few hospital stays for serious things. He worked 2 jobs, he trusted my mom to tend to me (she is a nurse) and stay with me in the hospital so he could get food in our mouths and keep a roof over our head. So it is very possible that he would never attempt to go to the hospital with his child.

The fact that they took from a young girl who is REALLY dying from cancer - you can't go much lower. Except maybe telling your little girl that she's dying. And I kind if have a hard time believing that the father knew nothing. I mean your daughter has cancer and you don't go to any of her doctor's appointments. Not once you do try to find out who is treating her so you can talk to the doctor? Apparently they were shelling out hundreds of dollars for medical treatment. He either never looked at the bank account or Terri was making purchases on something - which he didn't notice?
