As part of the 20 Years of The Angel of Darkness celebrations, I've invited writers to pen some articles delving into various aspects of Lara's darkest outing. This one in particular needs to be heard to truly be appreciated.

You know what? Artists create but then people interpret it and give it meaning or their personal meaning and view. Humanity does it all the time, it’s like seeing faces on Mars’ surface. We try to give things a meaning and logic. I’m a composer myself, and what I do is try to create the right mood and tell a story through the musical piece I create, but then who listens to it sees it in different ways or tends to attribute certain parts of the song to specific points in the game or story of the game. It’s basically really a personal view each time we listen to something, but the direction is the one the composer gives to us.

The music you hear at the end of Angel of Darkness (4:02 / 6:14) is hauntingly beautiful and makes me emotional each time I hear it. Seeing AOD Lara walk into the darkness like that (never to return to us/leaving us hanging in a way) is an image that will never leave me.

This is such a cool theory! I never would have thought of the theme this way even though I've sat listening to it on loop for quite a while many times. So happy a lot of us TR fans are keeping this one alive :)

Excellent analysis! I adore how richly textured AOD's soundtrack is, how elegantly it sets the emotional tone and reflects Lara's internal character arc. Listening to this analysis reminds me of how cinematic the full score is and how it enhances the whole story. Bravo! 🎉🎉🎉

@@Raidercast Funny timing, I just showed it to my boyfriend because it showed up in my recommended and it's also my least favorite collab, mainly because it feels so detached from the vibe of TR and Lara lol. My boyfriend was just kinda shocked watching it the whole time- I forgot the music video is the artists being put into the game to...idk save Lara??? An interesting collab for sure! lol

I *LOVE* A.O.D.; I wish they had taken (or been given) the time to finish it properly... and complete the trilogy. The main theme was my go-to tune for ages. Great video.

Love the analysis! I haven't really thought about putting specific parts of the theme to specific parts of the story, I kinda saw it like yes, all those emotions that this music makes you feel will be reflected in the story too :D Also I find it interesting that the section he matched to Lara and Kurtis meeting in the Louvre is the same section that plays at the very end when Lara finds the Chirugai :) But also yeah the parts of the previous themes that come back are a beautiful way to show that Lara is still there, her sense of adventure and discovery hasn't fully disappeared, but this is a bit of a drastic way of forcing it back too. And as someone pointed out quite a while ago, the AoD and the TR4 themes actually start the same! So it's a nice callback to Egypt, another connection, just changed because a lot has happened since. AoD also reminds me of TR3 a little bit with the "military section" (which in the TR3 theme I always associated with Nevada, not surprisingly), TR3 theme also felt like being told in advance what things you might expect during the adventure (though for full disclosure, it'd proably need the addition of something haunting and very creepy). But there are also actual parts of the TR3 theme appearing in the AoD theme, and well, because TR3 was my first TR and its theme is extremely nostalgic to me, hearing any parts of it in the AoD theme is like punching my emotions with a steel pipe, so yeah

This was truly an interessting analysis of the tomb raider aod score - for me it was kind of a fusion of a cinematic ost and a video game ost, two seperate medias who did way more combined around this time (Sons of liberty, mafia, final fantasy x to just write down some examples). Angel of darkness is for me the first tomb raider game with a bigger cinematic touch and yeah the music reflects often Laras thoughs if you ask me. Of course there are also enviroment oriented music like the strahov with its factory touch in the music or the louvre (which also still reflects laras feelings to be sneaky here). But its way more often in the ost about laras feelings, emotions and the situation she needs to handle. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, also great editing as always :) The music is truly outstanding in this game and I like the ost in general more than the ost from the tr games before. Damn now I want to replay the game...even if I propably going to suffer a lot in the boaz boss fight xD...

About the start menu theme: It sounds French, speacially this 2 second flute part at 2:03. This song reminds me of the "ballet" art form, the only type of dance (that at least I know of) capable of expressing darkness, sadness, and feelings alike - in contrast to the popular idea that dancing is necessarily a happy thing. The ballerina starts dancing slowly and graciously at 1:55, then you can see her fastly spinning around in danger at 3:40 and a death scene right in the end (6:30) with the violin reminding me of the The Dying Swan by Tchaikovsky, not in how it sounds but what it means: a sensible creature debating herself to death.

A great analysis video 👍, and by the way, the main theme for aod, does feature parts of the classic themes as well, but tuned beautifully to let you focus on the masterpiece directly, now i didn't find anyone talking about this but i found a video by a guy named vandersweater five years ago explaining it, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJyiaqyctbiUlYE.html Anyway, sorry if i got the comment a bit too long, keep up the great content 😎👍

Loved the analysis in this video, also the ideas about the Parisian Ghetto music I found interesting - it is the only part of the soundtrack which I admit gets on my nerves due to its repetitiveness and how large that section of the game is, but now I'm wondering if it is intentional to make the player feel Lara's torment at that particular moment and she wants to escape those intrusive thoughts but can't.

It's such a complex game to be hoenst it was and still is my very favorite. From the Parisian streets, to spooky cemeteries, to underground sewers, Louvre museum and crypts. Honestly this was such a masterpiece and would have been a game well ahead of it's time if more dedication and love was put into it. I do hope we see a remake of this. Would be a dream come true ❤
