In this video I take a fun look at a mechanical counter that was sent to me by a good friend; Another Maker. I go as far as tearing it down and taking it even further!

2.5 minutes in I'm 99% sure it's a solenoid. They had them long before I was born almost 60 years ago. You're spot on on the theory

25-50ms was max time between pulses. Meaning this counter can count a 12V DC signal that cycles on and off 20-40 times a second. Pretty fast.

Interesting, an extra notch could be added to make it base 5, or I suppose five notches could make it binary (along with repainting the numbers of course).

The mechanism reminds me of an escapement in a clock.

I had one like this years ago but with a reset button. I have no idea where it went. :) Lots of fun to play with.

I'm wondering if you could reduce the skipping at high speeds by varying the pulse width. Can't think of a use for a mechanical counter that fast but I want to see it nonetheless.

Just got one in the post ... Mine has reset button .. As a newbie any chance on a more detailed how-to guide on wiring up the MOSFET etc ?

I love these electro mechanical devices, and now I've ordered one for myself, no idea what use I will have for it 🙂. Is there a way to reset the counter?

The automated paper folders used in printing used those type of counters. They had a knob on the side to reset them to 0. They ran very fast. It was also very noisy when the paper was hitting the bar that stopped it so it would fold the paper.
