A neat midi trick with Harmony Bloom & midiGATEs

Today someone asked me to explain how to use midiGATEs (you could use other apps that filter midi notes, I like this one) to send different midi notes from the same instance of Harmony Bloom to different instruments. The desktop version of Harmony Bloom has a built in way of doing this I think, but the iPad one doesn’t (EDIT!: Actually it does, but only in the Standalone version, which is no good for me or most users, as I always use it hosted). Either way, midiGATEs is the best solution I can think of in terms of live performance options. In this video I give a spoken explanation and demo of that. I show how to route the midi inside AUM on my iPad - if you know how to route midi inside your host / DAW, whether on iOS or desktop, the same general principles will apply. Now here’s a further extension of that idea, use lfo gates (midi lfo modulator) to control the probality of midigates. Certain notes in any sequence would then further flux in and out. Nice

You mean midiLFOs I think? Yes I used to do that a lot back when I did more big messy midi jams on the channel! You can also, for example, send the same lfo to 2 instances but invert it in one, using AUM midi settings, so that when one gate is more open the other will be more closed. Or just set different ranges for each within which they can roam. So many possibilities!

funny how I connected the bloom to scaler and was wondering how something like this could be possible without setting up multiple instances of bloom, and here you are uploading this video like an answer 🤩 glad to hear you are feeling better 💪

Yeah, it's a great app for anyone who likes working with midi. Pity Art Kerns, the dev, has not released anything new in a while, I alwaus enjoy his beautiful and practical UIs

I dont have midigates, but you can actually run the app stand alone and sync it that way too into AUM.. I'm glad you're feeling better. Midigate method is definitely much more intuitive. I was wondering why it wasn't available in AUM. Maybe the dev will add it soon.

@GavinskisTutorials I've been using this on Desktop for a bit and was surprised, yet happy, it went to iOS, but another missing feature is importing and exporting presets, too. I am sure it will all pan out, and the dev seems pretty on top of everything, so I'm sure it will come in the next update.

@@GavinskisTutorials I have heard iOS makes for complication in that department but I agree 100%. Look at Bram Bos for example. One of my favourite developers yet import presets is overtly complicated for the most part. He's gotten much better but I think I have seen him mention the complexity of it based on iOS systems

@IwatoHyena yeah many Bram apps are lacking in this area. He should really go back and update the old ones. Adding internal preset systems to all the apps would also be an important thing to do.

Thanks Holden! Pianoteq is probably my desert island app, just in terms of the sounds. If I could only have one instrument app, it would be it, I think. Not as tweakable as a synth, of course, but I love these natural sounds dearly!
