Congrats! Hope you have a great time working at the lab! As I'm starting to learn QFT now, I'd be happy to see any QFT videos you put out... but at the same time QFT seems like one of the largest "sub-areas" from physics I've ever seen, where you need to know lots of prerequisites from all over the place before you can even start. So it's definitely a big undertaking.
@AndrewDotsonvideos
@AndrewDotsonvideos Жыл бұрын
That’s awesome that you’re starting QFT, I feel like non-abelian gauge theories will come much more natural for you with your GR background than for most people who first encounter it. Same math, different group. Christoffel symbols -> gauge fields, parallel propagator -> Wilson lines, curvature tensor -> field strength tensor etc. it be interesting to talk with you about other parallels you notice along the way
@eigenchris
@eigenchris Жыл бұрын
@@AndrewDotsonvideos Yeah, I've noticed some of those parallels already. It seems in GR, you study curvature on "Riemannian manifolds", but in QFT you study curvature in "Principle Fiber Bundles". Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a good intro to fiber bundles that isn't just a mess of symbols and definitions, but it looks like most QFT texts don't bother talking about them anyway. I guess it's something only the pure mathematical physicists worry about.
@lukasschmitz9030
@lukasschmitz9030 Жыл бұрын
@eigenchris you might want to try Mark J. D. Hamilton's book "Mathematical Gauge Theory". It is perfect for self study or studying in small groups. Also, gravity/GR can also be thought of as a gauge theory on a fibre bundle. More specifically it is a gauge theory formulated on a manifold's affine frame bundle or even its affine spin bundle. These are bundles that are as closely tied to the manifold's structure as its tangent bundle is.

Man time flies I started watching you when we were both in undergrad. I ended up not getting a phD like I planned but kept learning Python/DataScience glad you stuck with it.

Keep it up Andrew! Your channel helped me decide on pursuing physics, and just last week I got accepted to a uni Im very happy with to start my undergrad in physics next fall. Good luck with everything in the future and thank you :)

Dang andrew congrats. Getting to do work and research at a place like los alamos is really cool. Asking questions is really important and I like that this is where this started from your TMD

Congratulations! I recall hanging out with the Sandía and Los Alamos teams at the 1st National Science Bowl in '91 (I was on the Pacific NW Labs team). In the 90s I managed to score an interview at Berkeley Lab, but they wanted more experience (sys admin position, and me just some bloke with a BS in Astrophysics). It was a great experience getting to sit in a Cray and all, but I'd have loved being involved with their laser project. The Gemini Observatories in Hilo were a similar story. The TRACE project as well. These are tight markets, so I'm very glad to hear you were invited to intern. Still debating a re-do of physics as a post-retirement project, or jump ship to math or my easy route of CS (likely CS combo with either, since CAS system design is a draw). Gotta justify all those books that I keep buying every time Springer has a sale going on... ;)

Wow, first of all big congratulations Andrew, I’ve been watching you for a few years now and I’m so happy and proud to see the incredible progress you’ve made in your career. You’re a brilliant person and I can’t wait to see all of the wonderful contributions that I know you will make to the world in the upcoming years. You deserve all of the success in the world, I know you’ve been working extremely hard for it. I’m an undergrad in engineering physics and this video has really shown me how stupid and dumb I am. I hope you end up doing your course on QFT because I and so many others will love to learn from you, even though I probably will not understand 99% of what you say. I will make sure to ask questions in the comments so I’m sorry in advance lol. Keep on doing your thing and keep on inspiring people to achieve things that they never thought they were capable of ❤

Questions mean you’re paying attention, never apologize for that ! Thanks for all the kind words. Imagine taking the same class for 3 years. I didn’t immediately understand this stuff, and I also didn’t need to learn it over night. I’ve spent the better part of grad school slowly becoming more comfortable with QFT, it’s taken years and I’m still not there yet. But all I’m getting at is, study 1 topic for 3 years and tell me you don’t start to get the hang of it:)

I think the opportunity to be an intern at a national lab is pretty cool. I don't really know how an internship is supposed to work (Franky I'm not sure there's consensus) but getting to see the grown-ups work has to be encouraging. If you actually get an opportunity to be a contributors in some way that's even better.
