BigPEmu is upon us, and Atari Jaguar emulation has never been better. Let's walk through some of the Jaguar library and, uh,. "enjoy."

Fun fact: the Sega executives put out the 32x because they were afraid of competition from… THE ATARI JAGUAR

Aside from the infinite props to Rich Whitehouse, mad respect to Mike Mika for allowing him to release the core as open source. I can’t wait until this gets rolled into Retroarch.
@TheKins
@TheKins Жыл бұрын
There's no source code release for legal reasons, just a stand-alone release seperate from the Atari 50 collection. Which is still pretty generous of Digital Eclipse to allow! But also it means don't expect a RetroArch core.

I bought a Jaguar at launch back in the day, Tempest and AVP are absolutely fantastic. And I still have the Tempest 2000 CD soundtrack! I like humongous fan of the alien and predator movies, it's too bad to hear that you're not into them. So I was beyond excited when AVP came out on Jaguar

I used the Russian emulator a lot and it's actually really good. The weird trick to run games on it is you need use a load the cartridge option first and then press a run button to play. Didn't have 100% compatibility, but most games ran fine.

I doubt you'll go back and play it after this but if you map the strafe buttons (7 & 9) to the right and left bumper AvP feels a lot better to control.

1:55 - 2:10 it's so nice to see someone being able to do what they enjoy. Jeff knows who he is and what he does and not feeling the need to cover something when you don't feel like. A side note. I appreciate how for years and years he always going back and playing older games/systems that didn't get the type instant gratification coverage that games do now. I wonder what streaming would have been like if the technology was there for it back in the day but all the games were the same. 'Hey guys the new Gauntlet just dropped! i got three friends with me, let's see what 's new in Gauntlet 2! Will it live up to the hype!'.
@onikaze8445

it would be nice if the emu had a way to show the keypad overlays so you know what each does. WIsh I had caught the livestream so I could shout out to try Hoverstrike, and Battlesphere. other games of note were Club Drive, Checkered Flag, Defender 2000, for some reason Bubsy and Rayman stick out in my head as one or both being unique to the jag in some way, as in a different or modded version from the other releases, not sure why. I'm pretty sure Iron SOldier 2 was for the Jag Cd. Really looking forward to some jag VR emulation. I saw Missile Command vr in the list of roms. it would be great if there was some way to collate all the stuff that was in development for it, like Dactyl Joust.

It actually does have the option to show the keypad overlays on the controller. The dev shows it in his tutorial video on KZfaq.

Tempest X on PS1 was a refined version of Tempest 2000. Then TxK on Vita was similar but refined again...
@TheKins
@TheKins Жыл бұрын
Tempest X was modified from the Jaguar game specifically to avoid having to pay Jeff Minter royalties, IIRC. TxK was by Minter, and resulted in a bunch of legal argy-bargy with Atari until they got together and did an enhanced version for consoles as Tempest 4000.
@phanboyiv
@phanboyiv Жыл бұрын
Tempest X is different, but I wouldn't say it's more refined. The Saturn port is much much closer to the Jag original and about as close as you can get without playing the Jag version.

I think a really big "issue" with the Jaguar was that it had some amazing and underrated games for the time. But not really enough to be a must have console compared to the PS1 or the SNES. And that's a real shame because so many people overlooked games like AvP and Tempest 2000.

Can someone explain how this emulator was created? As in why is this one so good when all of the attempts prior to this never were able to work like this?
@TheKins
@TheKins Жыл бұрын
Presumably because the author worked on it full-time as a paid contract instead of as an on-and-off hobbyist project, allowing more time to be devoted to dealing with the Jag's... eccentricities.

The Jaguar Doom isn't perfect, but considering pretty much every future port (until we start getting "perfect" ports around PS3/XB360 era) is based off it, it's probably THE most important port of the game.
