A New Favorite! | North and South Book Talk | BookCravings

This classic book became a favorite of mine. Written by Elizabeth Gaskell in 1855, North and South is the perfect example of a beautiful romance with deep social content. Some people think this book is preachy, but I disagree. Maybe it is slightly preachy, but there is space enough for the reader to judge the ideas and conflicts that are presented.
I realized that every time I read a classic that is really good I feel surprised. But to be honest, recently what surprises me the most is a classic book that doesn't have considerable merits, what is pretty rare in my short experience reading them.

When I did my English Lit degree in the early 1980s nobody rated North and South as a novel...I even read a criticism saying it was deeply flawed. But still it was, and remains, my favourite novel.

Wow, I need to read this as soon as possible! Have fun on your trip. It sounds like you will have a great time. It would be cool if you and Mimi did a video together! Also I think you mentioned the Folio Society has a physical store? I would love to see pictures or a video tour of it if possible. I don't think I will ever get a chance to see it in person.

Pip Books thank you! Folio Society used to have a physical store in London, but it was shut down last year unfortunately ...

BookCravings Definitely not as famous as Jane Eyre and the like. I first heard about it from my mom since she's a fan of the BBC Series. I totally agree with you, it's great!
