Taiwan has some of the best wind speeds in the world, and urgently needs to boost its supplies of green energy. But getting an offshore wind industry off the ground is proving complicated. The FT's Rachel Millard investigates

Thanks for having interest in Taiwan at all and then even talking about the offshore wind industry! It's a pity that report was limited to developers and only top ranking government officials. Particular the Scottish involvement in Taiwan's supply-chain, would have been an interesting case.

Top Notch video. i have made a video on NJ's recent failed wind farm experience and there are excellent points in the that apply as well to that situation. Do you accept requests to reuse portions of this video. if so, please let me know.

📝 Summary of Key Points: 📌 Taiwan aims to become a leader in offshore wind power due to its high wind speeds, which is crucial for its semiconductor industry that relies on clean energy. 🧐 Taiwan has set ambitious goals to cut carbon dioxide emissions to net zero by 2050 and have 27-30% of electricity come from renewable sources by 2030. By the end of 2023, Taiwan had installed over 2 gigawatts of offshore wind power, making it the leading market in Asia-Pacific outside of China. 🚀 The government aims to have up to 13 gigawatts of offshore wind power installed by the end of the decade and up to 55 gigawatts by 2050. However, requirements for domestically made turbine parts have raised concerns about cost and supply chain readiness. 💡 Additional Insights and Observations: 💬 "Developing offshore wind power is complex and expensive, and Taiwan's supply chains are underdeveloped." - This highlights the challenges faced by Taiwan in becoming a leader in offshore wind power. 📊 By the end of 2023, Taiwan had installed over 2 gigawatts of offshore wind power, making it the leading market in Asia-Pacific outside of China - This statistic showcases Taiwan's progress in the offshore wind industry. 🌐 Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has signed a deal to buy electricity from wind farms developed by Orsted, which helps kickstart offshore wind projects and allows TSMC's customers, like Apple, to claim they are using green energy. 📣 Concluding Remarks: Taiwan is determined to become a leader in offshore wind power to support its semiconductor industry and achieve its ambitious renewable energy goals. Despite challenges with supply chains and domestic content requirements, the government is taking steps to support the industry's growth. With long-term deals and partnerships, Taiwan is making progress towards a greener future. Generated using TalkBud

Palavras leva-as o vento!!

How can manufacturing locally be disadvantageous than importing? If the corporates indeed want to contribute they must produce locally contributing thereby to employment generation and uplifting the incomes in the region they are investing in.

Screw your employment. They are already providing you with cheap clean energy. Its not their responsibility to give you a handout. The scale of this problem is such that we don't have time or money to waste on you if you can't pull your own weight

it is not economically viable to start local manufacturing businesses for the 8000 parts that are to be assembled into a nacelle. I'm sure that a large number of highly standardized parts can be sourced locally, but more specialized part are typically manufactured in a low scale by suppliers that already specialized in making these parts decades ago (at the start of the large wind turbine revolution in Denmark and Germany around 1990).

Base load can be supplied by energy storage such as pumped hydro, kintetic batteries, hydrogen or classic lithium ion batteries. It is way cheaper than building a nuclear powerplant.

Ukraine Intelligence should check historic sea level fluctuation and design their rebuilt ports. Then get a temporary monopoly with investment from food security such as Saudis who built Canada's G3 grain terminals. IF sea levels rise and IF Ukraine's ports are rebuilt correctly, Ukraine is world's bread basket and farmland and infrastructure are more valuable and a temporary monopoly on European food exports. Investors will want proof and so Ukraine should send independent experts to Rome's pontus grain port, 200 AD.

Sea level rise is not an if, water expands as it warms. The rising level is already measureable. However, you seem to overestimate its rate. The predictions are for a couple of centimeters per decade.

*Wrong.* The *_future_* of wind energy generation is vertical towers not overly expensive and massive blades. Less expensive to build, install, and maintain and can generate power with far less wind input.
