Ever wondered where the aquascape structures for saltwater aquariums comes from? Join us as we visit the famous MarcoRocks in Homestead, FL. Victor and Josh learn more about MarcoRocks as they cherry pick 2,500 pounds of beautiful dry rock harvested from what used to be an ancient reef. MarcoRocks has zero impact on our living reefs, and the dry rock they picked won't be dry for long!

Best of luck with your live-rock project Marco. It's lovely to see a mined rock, without an impact to the natural reefs. It's even better to see you curing it, inoculating it, and growing coralline on it. Bravo

For those that say dry rock is the bane of a new Reefer, it's true. It's a dinoflagelates guarantee and often times runs people out of the hobby. I just went through it in my new build. However, like everything else, forward progress must be made, and we simply cannot keep taking from the ocean. Anyone that's using this and having trouble, or will be using this, there's an easy way to bypass your ugly stage. You'll need a Nitrate, Phosphate, and Magnesium test kit at minimum. You're going to start with your normal nitrifying bacteria and cycle for a week or two. Right after your ammonia and nitrite drop, you're going to dose Brightwell NeoNitro and hopefully you'll have a few fish to feed for phosphates. Keep your Nitrate levels at a steady 10 to 15, no harm if a little more. Phosphate should take care of itself from feeding fish, but don't overfeed. Keep your Magnesium up at 1500 as this helps fight algae outbreaks. Marco rock leeches these nutrients from the water until it gets established. That's what causes Dinos and you can't stop them because your Nitrate level is always near 0. Keep the Nitrate level up by dosing and don't let your Phosphates get high. You'll bypass most of this stage of not all.

This is fantastic! There are many ways to cure a tank, but this sounds like an excellent way to go about it! Thanks again, I'm sure our audience will appreciate it.

You could sell the byproduct, negative space is so popular these days and you need rubble and powder to build a scape. Sure people mostly make their own byproduct but its a pain smashing up rock to powder.I would buy it.

While it's great that they are going to offer these pre-cycled wet rocks, this is really something that LFS's should be doing. Shipping dry is far cheaper. That way shipping costs can be kept down and LFS's can offer something that shipping makes online less competitive at. They just need some big vats and space to put them. That way people could even choose the rocks they like.

Hello! Currently, dry rock prices range from $2.89-$7.99 a pound depending on what type of rock you purchase. Also, rock purchases can only be made in-store and not online. The fully cured rock, however, will be quite a bit more and the price has not yet been determined.

Marco rock is going to drive so many people out of the hobby. Starting with dry rock is the worst way to start a tank especially for new hobbyists. They will be chased out of the hobby with all the problems that come with starting with dry rock. That’s why there is a huge uptick in Dino’s and cyano in the recent years
@andrew_schoener
@andrew_schoener Жыл бұрын
Chased out! Lol they’ve been around for almost 20 years, chill out. The problem is people starting they’re tanks wrong and not being patient, not the rock.
@Botzz28
@Botzz28 Жыл бұрын
@@andrew_schoenerwell the not being patient part is because it takes way to long for a tank to get established with dry rock. The biodiversity on the rock just isn’t there. When a new hobbyist goes through all of those dry rock problems they don’t have the experience like I do or you do so they get chased out of the hobby. People like me can have patience because I understand the process but other who are not as familiar with the hobby will not outlast the monthssssss of ugly stages of the dry rock. I just broke down a tank because I started with dry rock and it was an absolute mess for 2 years. I started a new tank last month with KP live rock and it made a WORLDDDDDDDDD of a difference. I will never ever ever ever start another tank with dry rock and would never suggest it to anyone EVER. ESPECIALLY newbies.

Not having patience is what drives people out of the hobby. Not the rock. If you have the patience to start with cheaper dry rock and are educated properly then their rock is fantastic. Rushing the process is the problem. That said, did you watch the whole video? I'm not sure you did...

It will absolutely cure fast, but with "wild rock" comes unwanted algae, inverts and pests that will often haunt you as your reef matures...
