That means that the American Civil War had 39 times the number of casualties. Damn. Goes to show how technological warfare over an enemy is preferable than being equal to them.

@Magni56 also it is worth noting that the shogunate had simply become fatigued by this point, the boshin war wasn't the first rebellion of the late edo periode and the shogun probably felt like enough was enough. like the shogunate likely could have won the battle of edo seeing they had the numbers and hadn't so far deployed their moderne weapons into combat but they chose to not let the city become a battleground.

@@jonasnee IIRC it's even more of a mess as BOTH sides didn't wanted that war, what with last shogun getting said post from being under house arrest (HINT: he was pro-emperor). Peaceful transition broke because "unofficial delegation" was assassinated, then Boshin itself started in the middle another negotiation about purely financial matters (as in how much money Tokugawa will transition to new government which had none) when morons on both sides essentially gone "IT'S A TRAP" and started fighting.

I've actually had a similar idea for an empire 2 total war that takes place throughout the whole 1800's, taking off from the previous empire, the century would be perfect as you can go from muskets firing in rows with breach loading cannons, to bolt action rifles, maxim guns, and heavy artillery, all in a single self contained campaign and keeping to the total war formula. think the Victoria games, but total war.... needs to happen.

@@evanwoodham6296 A lotta people seem to hold a grudge against Warhammer for overshadowing the historical entries since, I don't think it's Warhammer's fault that CA keeps half-assing the historical titles since FoTS, and giving everyone what they DONT want, instead of stuff they would totally go for, like the American Civil War, Franco Prussian War, etc.

Luigi Bros in a sense, the samurai class never died until after ww2 ended . The samurais and their descendants simply became the officers of the imperial Japanese military during the Meiji reforms while peasants still made up regular troops . Tojo’s dad being a former samurai guaranteed Tojo to be an officer

I hope they do a Total War set in the time of World War I. Think of the possibilities, tanks, fighter airplanes, more modern warships, submersibles, bigger artillery, fully automatic, semi-automatic and bolt action fire arms, chemical weapons, outdated spear and saber horse Cavalries. Think of how fun the challenge of waging war with those kinda of destructive tools. I mean FOS already showed those of us who have played it the challenges of dealing with better more powerful cannons, more accurate and longer ranged flintlock muskets and rifles, the real game changer that is the Gatling gun, armored warships with their flanks bristling with cannons. Before FOS one could get away with winning a battle simply by bringing enough spears and swords and morale to a battle. FOS still allows for as much but in hands of a skilled commander a smaller group of riflemen can defeat a much larger force of melee based units. It also showed that when rifle groups clash one cannot simply line them all up in a head on fight if one wants to win, learning the art of flanking and exploiting terrain such as using hills to stack lines of riflemen up to pour twice as much fire upon ad enemy since the slope eliminates the blocking of view for units in the rear becomes essential. To be honest I am disappointed that Total War franchise has taken steps backwards with the its releases since Shogun 2. Also call me a sicko if you want but I loved the blood dlc for Shogun 2 (I think it should have been in their from the start but dlc is the hip thing to do in the game industry right now apparently). It really made the battles seam more real and gritty which I believe they should be. After all its sort of an insult to war to downplay its violent and down right horrifically brutal nature. War is a nasty thing full of pain and suffering and I feel games about it should convey as much. I won't lie I kinda wished they'd have made so that men would lose limbs and generally get blown apart when high explosive cannon shell blows up in middle of a jam packed infantry line. Still sending bodies flying and having the force of the blast knock even those out of the lethal part of the blast radius was a nice touch. Now of course some of you will argue that this would be merely glorifying war which is bad. I'd counter with the fact that if we downplay war's brutal nature in games were glorifying it more by passing it off as being less serious and traumatic and there for okay.

TheRougeSky Same here, and unlike what many people would say, it *is* entirely possible for a Total War game to achieve a World War I setting. However, it would only be possible if the game engine has a significant update to accommodate the new style of gameplay; the current engine would not be able to support it, or at least it wouldn't be able to support it very well. There would also need to be lot of rethinking of how the game would play out to also accommodate the new units; tanks, aircraft, long-range artillery (could be off-map support, like the naval bombardments in Fall of the Samurai), new naval warfare, and trenches/new cover system (it needs to be better than Empire or Napoleon's). Government management and revolutions also need to make a comeback (the Soviet Revolution was a major event in world history, and forced Tsarist Russia to withdraw from the war). These things may need to be gradually implemented into the series, so it would be best for the Total War teams at CA to create a game set slightly before that time period during the mid-late 1800's (Empire II, perhaps?). Fall of the Samurai was a step in the right direction, but there needs to be more.

Well I suppose its really only a matter of time. sooner or later CA is gonna run out of good ancient pre-20th centery era history focal points and will have to turn towards the early 20th century and perhaps beyond. World War I would be the perfect test ground for modern and even future set Total War games as politics and warfare at that time were evolving and become more complex. CA could then use the results of a WWI set game to irony out the new details and game mechanics that would have to be implemented and refine them for releases to fallow.

I want a total war playing in Africa where mid game you playing as the tribes, Britain will try to colonize and muskets are able to be stolen from foreign powers after war

This actually isn't a bad idea. Map is Africa south of Sahara, start could be 1700 or something. Western presence starts small and passive, only trading and manning coastal forts. Game is a race to subjugate other tribes and westernize in order to repulse the late game crisis: The Scramble for Africa. Unit variety might be an issue, geography could be an issue, what would the tech tree unlock? Could work, not sure how well it would sell though.

@@kapitankapital6580 Tru, but not enough, even Ethiopia had to import from Europe in early 1900's. Only the Muslims had any sort of modern professionalism on the continent. Would be cool though, the European and Muslim campaigns being easier than the others

@@saucy2833 sure, they didn't make them themselves, but there is quite a difference between that and having to scavenge them off of invading European armies. Africans traded extensively with Europeans for hundreds of years before the scramble for Africa, including for slaves.

Somehow I don't think post-WW1 game will work. WW2 was mainly fought in cities and I don't think they'd be able to make a game that reflects WW2 warfare but it'd be interesting to see them try............................

@cheesypiees wrong, its an expansion, read the description of that game in steam, it says it doesn't need the base game but its still an expansion non the less, for example, world of warcraft...then came the burning crusade (witch is an expansion) but imagine getting the burning crusade and play it with out having the original world of warcraft, thats the same
