I borrowed a similar design and made it my own for this minimalist Knife Block. This was the proof of concept for production run of my new production woodwork company Thistle Collective. We will be launching soon. This is made from Montpelier Black Walnut and 200 year old White Oak barnwood. The slats are removable for wider chef's tools like Honing Steels. #woodworking #knifeblock #minimalist #cooking

Love it. One of the things I really hate about the 'standard' knife blocks is that you are really limited by the knives you can put in them (length & width of blade). This design completely solves this issue and is simple enough for folks to try at home although many will not be up to your very high standard.

So, I saw this video awhile back and I really like “different” and this was different than all other knife blocks. It inspired me to make one. I just finished it actually, I wish I could post pictures on KZfaq. Mine is different, it is not as big and probably only holds up to about 6 knives but I left space in the middle for large wooden spoons and things like that. The story behind it is that I picked up an old pallet that had been sitting in my pastor’s front yard for over a year. Most of it was rotten and just needed to be thrown away, but I was able to save some pieces of it. That’s when I remembered your video. My pastor loves to cook so as a surprise I thought I’d make him this open knife block out of this old palate that was good for nothing but throwing away. The pieces I was able to save, after I sanded them cut them down and then covered them with epoxy….man! The grain popped and the different colors in the wood was just crazy. Really beautiful I sanded the epoxy down to a satin finish and used some walnut for the top slats where the knives go. I think it is one of my best projects to date. My idea for when I give it to my pastor is to tell him that every time he looks at it to remember that just because something looks like it’s not good for anything but to be thrown away, doesn’t mean it can’t be made into something useful. Just like God does with us. Just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration. 😎👍

@@mattbutts7519 I agree, I love when he narrates and let’s us know the ins and outs of the process! lately I’ve noticed a lot more ASMR type videos floating around but i find it hard to focus on them and then it becomes background noise for me and I lose out on the experience ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Beautiful work and great design. I too missed your narration but your usual outstanding lighting and camera shots told the story well. The noisy house comment to Ivy was interesting.I thought I’m the only one that faces that battle. It was good to see you back creating videos. My goal is to someday figure out an effective way to light my videos like you do. Perhaps that’s something you could add to your series of “Film School Friday” techniques that you used to make.

Great camera work and I think the knife block is a real looker but sorry to say I personally believe lacks practicality because there is no divider to keep blades from dinging each other whilst being inserted or withdrawn from the knife block additionally I would think the height of the knife dividers would be prone to breaking as well as being a place for little bits of kitchen detritus and moisture to collect thus creating a potential place for the creeping crude to grow as well as be a home for corrosion and rust to attack your blades especially if you are like me and favor high carbon steel blades over knives with stain free steel blades. That all said I like the over all look just not how you came to that look.
@wmwalkerco
@wmwalkerco 3 жыл бұрын
It's been on my counter for some time now and I have to say I still love it. I keep my knives sharp and I haven't experienced any dinging. The air movement actually prevents "creeping crud" as opposed to conventional knife blocks that harbor moisture. I appreciate the feedback but I'm happy to say it's been an exquisitely functional knife block thus far.

I've been using it for more than a year now and never an issue. How are you currently handling your knives? Mine are all hand wash only so there is quite a bit of care involved so you don't cut yourself

@@wmwalkerco Mine is made out of beech, with routed slots for the knives, rather traditional really. I made it 25 years ago and the blades can only touch wood. Apart from an occasional woodworker, I do cook daily and consider it my #1 hobby. Knives are only washed by hand, and only by me 😀 Knives in a dishwasher would end-up blunt and nicked ;-) Because I am so careful about the blades, I would never put them in a block where blades can touch each other.

Sorry but, your dado blade walnut insert is gorgeous. Is that wood species pronounced "Mon-Pell-Yay" "Wall-New"? Good stuff as always - thanks! I typically enjoy your narration, but am OK with your mixing it up.
