Phil did stupid stuff like throw that Nazi salute from the back of the stage during A New Level. I saw Pantera about 10 times before they hit it big with Cowboys From Hell. I saw him do it at one of the shows at the Back Stage club in Houston and I just dismissed it as him just being an arsehole. It never dawned on me that he could be racist until I started reading about people saying he was. My best friend and I once stood in the back room of the backstage club listening to Phil tell an entertaining story about a fellow rock musician being stoned out of his mind telling folks to "reanimate" him. No doubt about it, the guy liked to perform. The best friend I ever had is White. We've grown apart; but, still manage to see each other once a year since she moved to Illinois almost 30 years ago. I was standing back there with her. He saw me and he didn't give any indication that it bothered him. We were at all of their shows. I saw him ask Doug Pinnick of King's X to come backstage and I've seen a couple of interviews where he has denied being racist, stating that he has friends of all "races, colors and creeds." Now....that just may be him being politically correct....or.... maybe he isn't necessarily "racist" ..but, has had some biased views in the past....and...has hopefully matured and become more educated about certain things. I don't think he's necessarily a "racist"... I just think he did some things for the hype of it...and... yeah... he could be a big arsehole....especially when he was high. I know he knows there are a lot of Jewish and hispanic fans of Pantera ...in that audience that night... Hopefully, it was just a case of him being drunk and doing something really stupid. I know this is old news... but....I can still comment on it. Last I heard, he claims to not be a racist.
