I love discovering new techniques and I loved this new way I used Derwent Inktense Blocks with Pastel Painting to create a soft wash.
Inktense Blocks are known for their intense color (which I love) but they can also be used much like a watercolor palette where you can apply your brush with water directly to the sticks of color. So check out this fun tutorial of some lovely birch trees!

Hey Susan, always a blast watching your videos and seeing you create your art! I enjoy seeing you innovate and create with pastels in non-traditional ways. Now if we could only figure out how to get some Terry Ludwig sticks without risking a trip to the workhouse! Or maxing out a credit card!

I love your videos and been a fan for a long time, you mention two different types of paper, which one is it? The cheap print paper you mention in the beginning or the sanded pastel paper?

Can i do this on an Canvas or is this not possible. Love your lessons
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, and I have a video lesson on that. You have to coat the canvas with something to add grit or texture though. I often tone my canvas first (with a nice underpainting color), let it dry, add product such as clear gesso (not regular gesso because it's white and does not have the grit that the clear does), I usually apply 2 coats and then paint with pastels. Hope that helps.

Hi just wondering if you keep your pastels separate in their original boxes or just mix them in a large container. Thank you.
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 2 жыл бұрын
I do a little of both. Sometimes it takes a while to accumulate enough pastels, but when you do it’s nice to create a full workshop pallet. After you have a good working pallet though sometimes it’s nice to keep some in sets.

Where do you buy Fisher Sanded Paper? I saw that Jackson’s has it. Is there a source in the US?

Hi Sheila, I get my Fisher paper from www.proartpanels.com. I usually buy a pack of 10 sheets of the 400 grit. They have various sizes available.

Susan? How can Pastels be ink, or what looks like Watercolors? I haven’t been painting for a couple of decades. Sooo out of touch with Artist materials and their improvements.
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, and that’s a good question but actually the intense blocks are not pastels at all but compressed ink. They work great as an under painting before adding pastels. And the way that I’m using them allows them to work a bit like watercolor as well. You could actually use watercolor to do the same thing for an under Painting. So many products! It can get confusing.

There is one difference between regular watercolor paint and Inktense blocks. We can actually use Inktense blocks to directly draw onto the surface, and if we add water to it, it dissolves and behaves like watercolor, AND when Inktense dries, it is permanent.

Um what happened to the drawing you were doing with the nupastels, you jumped from there to the intense with a clean surface not sketched in with the nupastels.

Why are you using newsprint? I would rather see this on pastel paper or watercolor paper.
@lisathaviu1154
@lisathaviu1154 2 жыл бұрын
She is using a sanded paper. Only the first sketch was on newsprint. Sanded paper is often, but not always, sand colored and resembles the color of newsprint, but depending on the how fine the sand is, you can add many more layers than you can on regular pastel paper. If you try and do an underpainting on regular pastel paper, it is easier to do so using rubbing alcohol since the paper will warp from water and might not straighten out even if you tape it down. I don’t know if Inktense is soluble in alcohol - I have only used the underpainting technique with pastels and alcohol or tinted pastel paper (both sanded and regular paper.) I find that the sanded paper gives the best results though. There are several brands of sanded paper, which you can get at a good art supply place like Blick or Jerry’s Artorama. Use only junky brushes though, since sanded paper will wear down a good brush.

I just used the newsprint for the sketch… The painting was actually done on Fisher 400 sanded paper. Sorry it’s showing the sketch first was confusing.
