The Sinquefield Cup sees Magnus Carlsen and 11 more of the world's best players compete in the Saint Louis Chess Club from 17-28 August 2019. The event is the fifth leg of the 2019 Grand Chess Tour. In addition to tour points the prize fund is $325,000, with $90,000 for 1st place.
Players receive 130 minutes for the entire game, with a 30-second delay from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided in a 2-game rapid mini-match (10 min + 5 sec delay), in case of just two tied players, and if necessary an Armageddon game (5 vs. 4) on 29 August at 13:00 local time. Ba4 provokes b5, so you can attack it with a4 and maybe, like you see in the game, the a6 pawn could become a weakness.

Levon was down to 1s at one point with Ian having over an hour on the clock. Nepo had 1hr 23 when Aronian had 4mins, Nepo had 1 hr 38 when Aronian had 20 mins left. At 7:55 in Agadmator's video Nepo had 1hr 43mins to Aronian's 36 mins. (nothing special about that moment, it's the bit I found in the live stream that matched)

yeah, the only problem about that logic is that b5 is played anyway in those kinda of positions, so it only gives a tempo to black, i don't know, maybe Ian want to be sure about the b5 move and had a very deep prep to refute it

In my perspective chess is strategic game much like a battlefield, you sometimes have an advantage in development. It is wise, to realize that the strongest thing about the position is your defence. And take a step back or force your opponent to take a step in so you will have somewhat of opportunity to find weakness aspecially when your opponent familiar with the battlefield.

During St Louis Rapid & Blitz Tournament, Levon defeated Ding in such a manner that Ding was forced to contemplate upon the board and ran out of time eventually losing the game & same thing happened to Levon against Ian but this time clock wrath was on Levon where he suffered abysmally on time dearth. #KarmaHitsBack In some or other manner for sure. Although it's a chess game and everybody is there out to win so it might seems lame to you that I am saying but then too the great example of Karma getting back for sure.

Not really sure what was the purpose of bishop A4 was but Nepo proved that the B5 push was kind of premature by creating that passed pawn after a couple of moves . Meanwhile Levon couldn't take advantage of his space on the queen side on the contrary it was were his problems started with that rook having to be passive while Nepo's knight was centralized and highly active .

Well the idea behind Ba4 is simple he wanna transpose all the position into Ruy Lopez Spanish variation . also the pawn structure in the queenside not that good as a4 will always take damage. I really like the Ba4 idea, in fact, it's winning a tempo since -black miss a move in his setup. check Ruy Lopez opening you will understand it.

oh cmon antonio, the main thing behind this game was nepo's blitz pace. he pondered the moves during the opponent's time. it was 20 minutes vs 2 hours in the middle and ended up with 1h.15m left on nepo's clocks. it was really exciting to watch just because of that sneaky strategy :)

I feel the purpose of letting black play b5 is to have a ruy lopez without black's pressure on the queen side and a misplaced black bishop. Mistake: There is no such thing as an old game of Tal :P

I would venture a guess that the Ba4 move by Nepo was him saying, “Okay, I am comfortable in this position, let’s see if you can do anything with the tempo.”
@smhollanshead

Bishop to A4 pins the knight to the rook. Levin breaks the pin by playing Pawn to B5. This pawn move forces Nepo’s Bishop to retreat to C2. I agree with you. Why allow Levin to expand his pawns on the queen side? Perhaps Nepo thought Levin would break the pin by retreating his Bishop to D7. Nepo’s Bishop A4 move is a misjudgment and an inaccuracy. It happens to the best of us. A rule I live by: Never attribute a chess move to brilliance that you can attribute to stupidity. Stupidity is much more likely and much more common. Feel free to use this as one of your quotes. Please give credit to the hoody guy.

Remember, in the Spanish, white PROVOKES a6 and b5, and especially the latter move is considered quite weakening, with good reason. Black was not ready to play B5, maybe later.
