i took a Taxi to Fallujah alone and i had met a contact via couchsurfing, but they weren't able to have me stay with them , there are no Hotels in fallujah so this place was my only option as it was getting late , too late to drive back to Baghdad , although in future i would just go to fallujah on a day trip and return as this place was the most expensive place i had stayed ! we all thought it would be a lot cheaper..... This place was once a buzzing tourist resort! It won an award for the best tourist resort in the middle east! it was very weird being there alone to say the least! The whole process on getting in with the security and they didn't want me to stay there alone as no foreign tourist has stayed there ! lol....i was just freaking out a bit as i realised i was in the middle of nowhere, with no power, no internet and it was so cold and there was nobody else there that night! All part of the adventure !! hard to imagine what a happening place this was back in the 80s! i saw pics online and it was such a vibrant happening place! next vlog is my day in Fallujah

Thank you Emma for visiting Habbaniya lake resort. This brings back so many memories! You’re right it used to be very vibrant. Many families from Baghdad used to go there for vacation during the 80’s!! It’s so surreal seeing it so deserted 😢 it looks as though the lake is drying, because the water has recessed from the beach!!

it's so sad to see the resort of Habanya became like in the video, it should be rebuilt to receive the visitors during the spring/summer time, i can see some rebuilding stuff around but seems no one is working .. too sad!! Al-Habanya lake is NOT salty, it's an artificial lake was created as a water reservoir for the Euphrates River, so there is no way for salt to be there because we in Iraq does not have any "sea" or ocean close to use beside the Arabic Gulf which is close to Basra (far south of Iraq). And actually, in Habanya, there was a huge british military camp back in days (until late 50ths) it was one of the largest military bases in the country, many Iraqi people worked over there but when GB ended their presence in Iraq they handed over the base to the Iraqi Army.
@WanderingEmma
@WanderingEmma 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm I had read several reports online that said it had increased salinity due to water shortages and other environmental factors … ( nothing to do with it being near a sea ) … but it had lost a lot of natural wildlife and some birds because of the salinity in the lake … there are quite a few sources online that say that … that’s why I said that lol … maybe we’re all wrong lol… I didn’t get close enough to taste it 😊🇮🇶
@enkidu77
@enkidu77 2 жыл бұрын
@@WanderingEmma Maybe the reports are correct but as much as i know as soon as they need the water from that lake to use for agriculture and for drink they open they take it from Habanya and Tharthar lakes.
