Lots of problems with this one!
I debated even finishing this piece of Birch but the spalting was too much for me to resist. All in all I think it looks pretty cool. The inside not as nice as I like but it will probably have dried flowers or something in it.

Thank you very much Peter. Oh I was hanging on the edge of my lathe wondering if it was going to hang in there for me. Once I got to the bottom I could relax. The farther you reach in the bigger the chance of things going south with a sketchy tenon. But you still need to be relaxed when turning. If you too tense it is more likely something can go wrong. Thanks for watching, Gary

Hi Edward, it was either it was going to work or I was done. I had nothing left on the bottom to make another tenon or a recess. My first thought was to hot glue a tenon on which I have done. But the broken piece fit back in nicely and was locked in place so I figured it would hold the stress of the rest of the turning. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

Thank You Gary, Thank You Dave at Calmwood Creations.. WOW Gary this is VERY different. At 12:31 I agree with your "wow" cause that grain looks like it's going to offer some interesting figures! HA those wormholes were giving you problems (my way of thinking is the more wormholes the better, omg!). I know Gary this soft, punky, wormy wood was perhaps not that desirable for you BUT for me it was WONDERFUL. Watching how you had to fix the tenon and more or less baby it along to achieve a finished turning. This is one of your most entertaining turnings. LOTS OF DRAMA Gary & I love it ..... until your next adventure... TM

Thanks Gary, wow what a labour of love that was. It’s a real pain when the tenon splits right off like that. In Australia we have a timber called Gidgee, extremely dense very hard hardwood, which also often splits tenons off. You’d think I’d only use mortises on it now. Slow learner 😤😂. The spalting made this piece. Above your lion face I see a unicorn or pony at least.

I think it came out great! We cut down our birch tree three or four years ago and I have been working my way through the wood. Shellac based sealer is definitely my best friend. If it looks like it may be a particularly nice piece I will get out the penetrating resin. Either way, a little3 patience and extra effort is always rewarded with beautiful turnings.

WOW, major credit for getting something out of this. I found some birch sitting out so I took some (not sure if I should have, but it's not the first time I've done it and it won't be the last) and found the same rotten problems. Now it's just sitting out by my shed. This made me think I might be able to get something out of it.

I am just going to say it straight, pieces like this are always worth it. They are the most interesting, usually require some extra thought to finish, and sometimes even teach us a few things. This is pretty much in my wheelhouse, for some reason, most of my stuff has at least a little punkiness in it by the time I get around to working on them. This one was funny, because I was just finishing a really soft birch root vessel thus morning. My is not as smooth as yours is, but it may get to sit awhile and I can sneak up on it and try again to get the sanding better. I put Howard's feed and wax on it, and maybe that will soak through and give it a little bit of something that let's me polish it up a bit better. It was fun though and that's all that counts.

Thank you William. I did have fun turning this even though the wood was not in the best of shape. But on the outside I think that really added to the overall look. The inside was really hard to get sanded. Maybe she can put some dry flowers in it. Thanks for watching, Gary

I see a standing bird where you saw Spiderman. This was a lot of work but that's not news to you! It wasn't my labor but if it was, I would have to say it was worth every frustrating minute! Lots of great color and spalting. Combine that with your cool design and you have a winner! Nice finish, too. Not easy to do with all that punky spalting. Great job, Gary! 😊 Phil

I will check out the bird. Makes sense because it did take off flying like a bird for a second. I poured salt on its tail so it would not fly away again LOL. Oh it was getting to be a pain getting down to the bottom on the inside. And a long time sanding. But it was worth it just to see what nature and those worms created. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

Well done! You ended up with a lovely bowl/vase. So happy the tenon held up. I might have used either wood glue or hot melt, but your use of CA worked very well. Great job turning a difficult piece that ended up being a great piece. Thanks for sharing it.

Thank you Doug. My first thought was to turn tenon on a piece that would fit across the bottom and hot glue it in place. I think you know I am a big fan of hot glue. But I decided to test the CA and see how it felt. After gluing it I got on top of my lathe and stepped on the tenon and it held me fine LOL...No I did not but I did watch it close as I was turning and it really held nicely. Thanks for watching, Gary
