Gary When gluing the rings together, which method would you recommend, the lath method or the press method? I’m thinking lathe might be easier to line things up? Asking cause I’m doing my first tornado vase.
@ThePapa19475 сағат бұрын
That is a very good question. For sure the lathe is easier to line the rings up.Takes less time because with a cone or cole jaws they are centered and you do not have to deal with that. Other reasons: With something this small the lathe works great. Where as bigger rings I may use the glue press. With the smaller rings I turn the ring round and flatten it sooner. There is less to turn off to get them round so there is not the stress of a larger ring. But I will use the lathe on larger ones. I may use coles jaws to get them lined which can apply pressue to the joint. If I do not get the cole jaws out then I will use a flat board to put pressure against that ring to get a good joint. But what you are doing I would use the lathe. And if needed you can use a flat board to get equal pressure. Hope this helps, Gary

@ThePapa1947Күн бұрын
I pick the side I want to be top and hot glue a tenon on it. Then flatten the bottom and hot glue a tenon on it. Flip and clean up the top and then cut the rings.

Gary, this is just beautiful work. I’ve been out of the country for two weeks and came back to this most wonderful video. I don’t know if you share the plans, but I am certainly thinking of making one of these myself. It is great. I do have the software that I purchased years ago and enjoy working with it. I have spoken with Lloyd several times and have enjoyed working with him as well. If you would share the plans, that would be wonderful. Thank you again, Van.

Did you use a floating bottom?
@ThePapa19472 күн бұрын
Not really. What II did was cut a step on the inside of the bottom ring then glued a disk in place. The disk is so small there should not be any movement that will cause any issues. I did the same thing on the out side of the bottom disk. I have made many turings and have only done one actual floating bottom. I have one that is 50 years old that does not have a floating bottom and it is fine. Maybe it is the humidity here in Oregon.

Thx Gary, your segmented turnings are my favorite. Really appreciate the how-to info you provide. Really looking forward to doing some of these once my leg lets me stand for extended periods. Question, what do you do with all your creations? My wife only wants to keep a few. Still working to make a consistent design that holds water safely she can use as a live flower vase. Looking forward to more segmented creations.

Excellent! You have created another wonderful piece that looks really, really great. I am just starting on my segmenting journey. Started rearranging my basement shop today to accommodate cutting, gluing and sanding segments. It will take a few days, but hopefully the new arrangement will make the cutting and gluing go smoothly. No room for the table saw and sanders in my small garage shop.

Thank you Valerie it was a lot of fun to do. I have a few weeks where I can try and get my shop in better order. Now that my aliments are mostly fine I plan on it anway. I have a nice work bench in front of my table saw and cleared it off yesterday. Just so I do not have to use the table saw for a flat area LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary
