We have talked quite a bit on this podcast about minimalism and living clutter-free. Even as someone who has been practicing the principles of minimalism for many years, I find that I have to constantly be aware of what is coming into our home so that it does not become overwhelming. Robyn and I chat in this episode about developing a decluttering habit in the new year. Rather than viewing decluttering as a giant one-time task we have to tackle, we should aim to make it part of our everyday mindset. We live in a time and place when it is easier than ever to acquire items, so we have to be intentional about minimizing in order to experience peace in our homes.
In this episode, we cover:
- The surprising role your age may play in your relationship to clutter
- Addressing the emotional component of decluttering sentimental items
- What minimalism can look like in a kids’ room
- Moving past the feeling of overwhelm to get started decluttering
- Tips for making decluttering a part of your everyday habits
- How storage spaces contribute to the problem of overwhelm
- Dealing with guilt when decluttering
- Addressing some of the common psychological obstacles around decluttering
- Choosing to make our homes reflect our current season of life
- Finding the right balance of minimalism for your personality and your needs
- The one thing you can do today to start a decluttering habit

ABOUT ROBYN
Robyn Buchanan is a mom, wife, nurse and youtube creator. She started her minimalism journey because she was overwhelmed coming home to a cluttered house after working in a chaotic emergency department.
Since decluttering, she not only uncovered her floors and surfaces, but also the deeper meanings behind our clutter, how clutter impacts our focus, why it’s so hard to declutter, and how life is freer without our stuff weighing us down.
Robyn lives on Vancouver Island in BC with her 3 teen boys and husband, 4 out of 5 of them have ADHD, including Robyn & her husband. She loves hiking, gardening and cooking along with Jane Austen, Monty Python and Harry Potter movies.

I agree with 98% of this and try to keep quite a minimal household and wardrobe but the one thing I disagree with are the books! I want to have a library of books for my children to read throughout the years. I buy the hardbound copy whenever possible so that they look nice on the shelf and don't get destroyed as quickly. To me books are an investment in my child's future. 😊 I probably would only keep a small basket of books in the children's room but the livingroom shelves will always be full of beautiful literature for them to explore! :)

I agree! About 8 years ago I was moving and very frustrated by all my things…so I donated boxes and boxes of books to the library. I had spent years collecting good books, many classics. I have never regretted donating anything before. But I regretted getting rid of all those books.

I love books, but after living for 5 years without much room to put them I value libraries a lot. We go to the libraries regularly and have some books at home. I grew up with a library full of books. I myself do not like to reread books, unlike my parents who did read the same books many times. I feel like in my age it's not wise to keep a library, but when my kids are teens and older, it may change

@Tuskenknits I did the same thing. Donated "heavily" to the library at a time when I felt I needed to reduce my bookshelves. Over the next few years, I actually ended up replacing many of the books. I don't feel books are necessarily an area of importance on thinning out. They are often times a backbone of education and mental stimulation.

Really enjoyed this one. When my husband died I quit work for 5 years to stay home and take care of and raise my daughter. I took a major financial cut and shopped at 2nd hand stores. I was so happy that people donated good, useful items! Since going back to work and having more, now when I declutter I make sure the items are in good shape and believe I'm blessing someone else, just like I was blessed.

BABY BOX: In my attic each child has one bin of baby items from when they were young that they will be gifted once they buy their own home. When we replaced our roof the attic needed to be empty. WOW! That was fun to declutter, put things in plastic bins and throw away ‘junk’. 2 weeks ago my husband “cleaned” the basement work space while I was at work. When I asked where it all went he said “Don’t worry. It’s where it belongs.” 😂 I don’t know what was even in that one pile so I’m playing ‘Elsa’ and Letting It Go! 😂

Realize that the kids books made now are NOTHING like what we grew up with. I am keeping books from my childhood or ones I have read with my kids because they have changed them from prose to comic book style (Babysitter's Club, Boxcar children Nancy Drew), from wholesome to wretched. All pushing agendas on our children of evil, while banning books that show decency.

When my father passed away, he had quite the collection of Ertyl Tractors, among other things. He started collecting them after age 50. He told me, being the eldest of 9, he was lucky to have a stick and a potato to play with when he was little. His sisters also collected Barbies and Royal Dalton dolls as adults. Grandpa was a farmer and they lived pretty tightly in the beginning. I do understand the psychology behind these actions. One thing I see is that the quality of the older items are of better quality, which tells me to keep it! I personally have saved items for my children who are now adults and I'm now asking, "do you want it?" If not, its got to go or they can get rid of it and help me out. I have been struggling with where to begin with decluttering but I must take a bite out of this elephant and begin! 🐘 Thank you both for this motivating discussion!

Really great books are one thing that I keep because we don’t live near big libraries. So I will buy our favorite beloved hardcover books. Mostly at thrift stores. Toddler books, however, are easy to come by and easy to let go.

I saw a minimalism video once where a woman took the small engravings off her award plaques from high school. You know that tiny gold rectangle on the front where it is personalized? She just put all of those little engraved rectangles together in one nice picture frame so she only had one sentimental item from that phase of her life to keep, rather than a bin of ten or more. I thought that was so smart.

My humble opinion. 😊 I think it depends on the person. I am definitely a maximalist. I feel happy with my collections and my pretty things around me. It doesn't stress me out. It brings a smile to my heart. It was still a great chat. My children are minimalists and declutter when it gets too much. Which I am proud of them yet it isn't me. 😊

Hi Lisa, I'm s long time follower on your KZfaq channel. I agree with everything your saying but im 64 years old with grown children out on their own. Just want to give you a different view point from an old lady...lol. I'm a saver, not a horder but I have stuff. When your kids grow and move out, they need everything to get started and we all know the prices of things and how expensive this world is. I find because of the things I have saved I was able to get them started and they so appreciate it. Just wanted to give you a different view point.

Mine and your kids are a new generation and they don’t think like us. I loved all my mom’s things and kept everything she had or gave them to me but honestly my kids or thier friends aren’t interested in anything. I also cooked like my mother so ofcourse I was happy to have a lot of her pans etc that I grew up cooking with her and I’m still using a lot. My cookie sheets are 50yrs old and they make better cookies than the new cookie sheets. This all being said all my children and I truly believe it’s most of them nowadays they want all new so I’m not keeping anything anymore.

AGHHHH. This was great and I so thank you two. I am just turning a young and pretty healthy 79 and live alone now. So true about mourning the stage that is over and... now what? I have been in my house about 50 years and every room needs to be decluttered. I was also a war baby and grew up at the end of the depression. I had grandparents who were German on one side and the poor Scots-Irish on the other and the very strong teaching was "WASTE NOTHING!" That is so very hard to undo. I am also an artist and a teacher, which makes it worse! I am very ambitious and have many creative ideas that usually don't get completed because of being overwhelmed with the things I NEED to do, leaving no time for "playing" or doing things I have been called to do...writing a book, or using my creativity for income. I am a certified life coach but have done very little with it as my business skills are so minimal. I have done bits and pieces but am overwhelmed with the whole house and actually, farm. And YES! It is so depressing and feels like a heavy weight that I don't want to carry! At this point there are two obstacles that I constantly face. My energy level to keep working at the same level that I used to, though I am very active and do still keep farm animals, a greenhouse and work at things every day. The second is the actual getting rid of things whether throwing them out or rehoming them. I live in the country so it is difficult to take things somewhere. I also don't like listing things for sale as I live along and am not comfortable with strangers coming to my little farm. You have inspired me once again..........so many thanks. ❤

I find that the younger generation is not interested in accumulating “things”. Minimalist is the new accepted way to live. It took me until my oldest turned 35 to ask if they wanted their childhood toys and books. The look I received was not the most respectful 😅. They wondered why I kept them for all those years. The next day I took a trip to the thrift store.

Yes! I hadn’t heard it mentioned before now, about why this generation has such a challenge with clutter. I’m 38 and had grandparents who lived during the depression too. We were taught to keep everything. My grandparents had a drawer spot for twist ties and rubber bands. Somehow their homes weren’t cluttered, but I’ve struggled all my life to get rid of things/their things, as in I’m always trying to declutter because my home overwhelms me. Dana K White calls it a clutter threshold. I hope that my children don’t have the same problem, and that they can appreciate the things they own, but not let stuff (gathering more or trying to get rid of it) consume their extra time. 📦📦📦

Poverty vs. Middle-Class. No true place to call home vs. owing a beautiful house. In poverty an old pair of boots that are too big or too small are kept because when Winter weather sets in and no new boots were come across because of the constraints of the reality of poverty those old boots now are a godsend. 🥾

Loved this conversation. I see the generational differences too between my grandmother born in the early 1900’s and my mother born in 1948 and I’m born in 1981. My mother was a total hoarder always “what if I need it one day?” And that day never came… when my sister and I cleaned out her house to sell it and move her into a better situation, we trashed TWO 15’ dumpsters of old junk and ratty things my mom had held onto… it was sad. I am very minimalist and battle with my husband who is a pack rat.

I totally loved this podcast! I’m 69 and wanted to jump in a couple times if I would’ve been able to. Talking about keeping things for our children doesn’t seem to be the generation that wants our things. I have given my kids quite a bit of things or offer and if they take it I see it disappears and they replace for new. They’ll use it till they get the money for all the new versions. Some things they come straight out and tell me no. So I’m not keeping anything. I loved my mom’s things she’d give me or have left to me after she passed but I used to cook with her and remember all the pans we used. My cookie sheets I still use are from getting married 50yrs ago but I’ve used new ones and I go back to the old, the cookies bake the best! My daughter did tell me what she’d like after my day but the boys aren’t interested and it’s probably because of thier wives. They want thier dad’s special things he has. Ofcourse my jewelry I wouldn’t get rid of. Other than that if I don’t use it or haven’t in a long time it’s gone. I can’t stand Knick Knacks on my furniture. Keep everything pretty clear. If I really like something I have an antique cabinet with glass from and I arrange what I want to show in there. Also I can’t stand much on my counters. My husband likes to put books on shelves and if they’re too old I can’t stand keeping them. This was a great podcast for sure and I hope it helped a lot of people that are struggling with clutter.

I'm a 30 year old mom of 3 and my clutter problem is from all the variety available today. I realy have to focus on building on the toys we have rather than expanding to a new variety. For example I have magna tiles, magnet blocks, wooden unit blocks, Lincoln logs, leggo, and giant blocks 😮 and it would be better if I only had a lot of two building systems . I am working on stream lining the childrens interest. Buying things that work together, if my daughter loves Barbie I just want to focus on barbie rather than several different brands of dolls that will look and feel chaotic to play with. Sometimes when things are of the same make and set it looks less chaotic, like a matching set to wear. So I am focused on finding brands that offer all of what I am looking for so toys aren't hodge podge and are more cohesive.

I have all of those building sets with 3 kids, too. If it's helpful, consider rotating them. My kids only have 1-2 building sets out at a time. And each type of building toy must fit into a bin. So right now they only have duplos and their wooden train set (which I count as a building toy). The rest all go into the toy closet for rotation on a later date. If they ask for a different toy, I have them pick one up pack up and put away and so on. It never gets overwhelming and their toys always feel "fresh" to them

I grew up with a father who was a pack rat and our entire huge basement was just FILLED to the brim with boxes and parts and tools etc and same with our garage (so neither him or my Mom could park their cars…. It was double wide). It always just felt SO chaotic at home. I’ve learned to do the opposite based on my childhood and how I learned what feelings I DON’T want in my home. It’s hard when you have to teach yourself a different way of being, but it really keeps me on track whenever I see a pile start to fill up, I make a mental note for the coming weekend of larger projects I need to tackle, or like you say, do things as I see them (little clean ups here and there really do add up and keep things in a better flow!). There really is a balance between how much stuff we have and what we need, which if we strike it right we don’t have frivolous things hanging onto us. Your advice to get downsize clothing in a recent video I watched really helped me with my laundry piles too! That is still an area I am trying to work on so we don’t have too much laundry to deal with and more pieces we actually like and do wear. Appreciate your content so much as a mother (and fellow 1985 baby!) 😊

New to your channel and this is just the motivation I needed. My husband and I are buying my deceased father in law’s home. We inherited all his stuff in addition to having nearly 40 years of our own marriage “stuff”. I’m very motivated to not leave our four children a bunch of useless stuff when we pass. The time is right to declutter and minimize. So far the kitchen and living room are just the way I like them. Only the 2 offices (hubby’s and mine), the basement, the garage left to declutter and organize. Looking forward to listening to all your great ideas. 😂

I think it’s interesting that we have been taught about being wasteful with things but what about wasting our time and energy on the things.. I mean I would rather not be concerned about the thing but I should be concerned about the temple in which I am and to be a good steward of the time I have been given and where I place my energy. I think the mindset for our generation (I am 36) has to be shifted from the things to where and how should I use my energy and time best.

I spent the last 5 years wanting to declutter and necer being able to do it because i spent money on this! So i went through and boxed up everything i wanted to sell and they lived there for 3 years. Then i decided to donate it and it lived in the boxes for another year. Then i accidentally set fire to my house and we got a total payout because it was so damaged and so many of our possessions were smoke damaged or water damaged and unusable. It was so freeing knowing that we were literally being paid to get rid of it. The money was what i was using to hold on to the possessions i didn't want anymore. The worst part was seeing all those clothing that could help women get trashed because they were unsalvageable. Just donate it now. Dont wait.

Thanks for all the info. At 68 I'm not into minimalism but I am very mindful of everything that comes into my home. After wearing uniforms for 32 years our wardrobe is much different living on the acreage and having animals than someone who lives in the city. I really don't have a problem getting rid of stuff but my age as taught me not to be wasteful of the resources that I have. I do recycle, reuse and repurpose.

I am turning 70, divorced at 49. Once my kids got homes of their own, I gave them their stuff. Now, I'm going thru my home and only want to keep things I use or love. I have bought new things, replaced worn out things, purged many items. It's an ongoing process. But each stage of our lives is different, so we have to adjust/purge and make room for that stage. My hobbies have changed over time. Cooking has become more of a necessity for better health. Thanks for a great utube episode!

I had to smile at the lady from church giving you a large amount of cupcake liners. I keep mine in a canning jar in my pantry. if I had a BUNCH of them, I would keep a smaller canning jar of them in the pantry still, and put the rest in other canning jars homed in the basement until you need to refill your kitchen pantry cupcake liner jar. ;D

My mindset is that possessions already exist. So where should it exist? In your home on the floor or in the closet where you completely forget about it? Or somewhere where it’s not causing you excess amounts of stress and anxiety? Just be more intentional about what you then bring in your home afterwards.

Just an idea to store cupcake papers in Mason jars, they stack well upside down or right side up in jar and you can keep a couple of jars nearby and store rest in a clean dry place for later. This is a very honest conversation that we all ponder and need to do today and throughout the years. Enjoyed this very much, ty both. Keeping family heirlooms or history of family means more after your children have children and we are old and can reminisce and tell the stories (or after we are gone.) Minimum pieces and collections. It may mean more to one child or grandchild or family member than another. Sometime those types of things to ask kids and grandkids and extended family before donating or throwing them away, it could be very appreciated. They are just things, but also your family roots that you can connect to through the generations. -John's wife

Moved often growing up so didn't get the chance to accumulate many things; but noticed later in life did move alot less; so in the last decade; only 3 times, but noticed that being in one location you just can't help to accumulate many things. This episode covers some great tips; if u notice that items aren't being used, then it's a good reason to get rid of them; making a list to help in getting items categorized well is important

Yeah knowing yourself is so important. My SIL and I are both more minimally minded but she has far more stuff than I do because she is naturally very tidy and organized. If I tried to have the amount of STEM toys, kids clothes, books, etc. that she has I would be total wreck bc I can’t keep track of any of it 😂

I kept everything because it took me months of saving to get that slow cooker, I needed new sneakers for 2 years and finally was able to buy a good pair, but I keep the old pair because I can work outside and not worry about messing them up. Hand me downs are a thing in my house, so yes I have boxes saved up till my younger kids grow into it. The price of everything is going up, the rice cooker i bought last year is now 20 dollar more. The lockdowns didn't help either, if anything it made me not want to toss things less

I'm 34 and I've been decluttering in layers for years! My youngest (3rd) is 7 months old now and I desperately need to get rid of stuff out of my house! I'm just not coping with everything! My younger sister, nearly 21, lives in a 1 bedroom apartment with her husband, an 8 month old and lots of pets. They are such hoarders 😅 I used to live like that but I just couldn't anymore!!!

Wow! It’s good to know that I’m not the only one feeling overwhelmed seeing the useful stuff on the kitchen counter. But when I clear the kitchen counter for my sanity, my husband will comment that the kitchen looks sad , empty and nobody is living in the house. Made me nuts coz I think the kitchen looks peaceful to me. I cook a lot so I also have many kitchen items that I use and useful. I have to declutter more so I can think straight. My relationship with the kids and husband is not good because of the mess in the house. I want a clean house and I am constantly seeing their stuff around the house that don’t belong in a room. I felt violated, disrespected and a slave in my own home. It makes me angry. Time to get rid of more stuff. I need peace of mind, not clutter. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! This is very helpful! ❤️🙏

This podcast!!! I am stressed to the max, I want to declutter, but feel so defeated as I don’t know where to start as I have a few things large porcelain dolls and a crystal set that take up a lot of space, but the market isn’t good right now and I don’t want to give the stuff away unless it’s to a true appreciative collector, it holds me back…emotionally hard.

Here’s something that may help you….if you don’t use it or it’s packed away get rid of it. I’m very minimalist and always have been. I can’t stand anything on my counters only 2-3 things. So just go from room to room and take your time and have 2 containers. If you don’t use, like or haven’t seen it for a long time get rid of it and what you want put in the other container. Once that room is cleaned out then organize the room and put the items you want or use in a place to look at or use it depends on the room you’re decluttering. One thing I can’t stand is Knick Knacks sitting around on side tables, coffee tables etc. I keep everything pretty clear. Also it’s easier to dust 😅

Lol... I love my silicone bundt pan and don't even use it for cake! We use it for high hydration, enriched 100% freshly milled wheat bread (which needs a mold). I discovered that when I needed extra extra loaf pans for bread. We actually keep it covered on the cake stand on the dining table. Now I would choose that over the extra loaf pan because it looks beautiful and cuts the perfect slice for our needs.

I’m not necessarily a minimalist, especially as we’re all home all the time and the kids need things to do, be it legos or drawing, whatever speaks to them 😜. But I do perform a big declutter and organization right before we start school in the summer and again in the winter. I’m not a shopper, but with 9 kids we get a lot of “stuff” come through the doors. I try my hardest to minimize the amount of stuff, especially the cheapy junk toys, that makes it to their play areas. I appreciate the gesture, but why does the library, bank, Youth Group, etc have trinkets and stickers for the kids ALL THE TIME??

I find decluttering so freeing. Like a physical weight lifted. Thankfully i have not struggled to get rid of things, but im also not sentimental. I think someone who's sentimental would struggle more. I have 4 kids, a family of 6 living in 1000 sq ft and we homeschool. We HAVE to have less otherwise we can't move around! :) plus organization is my husband's live language (lol) so o try ;)

I think also focusing on bringing less into the home in the first place. I also try to repurpose, repair, sell, donate, even look to see how it can be recycled can all help avoid the landfill if possible! I recycle clothing items that are no longer good quality to even donate (even recycling underwear/bras/socks) there's many free services out there to mail your stuff to so they can be repurposed into furniture filling or insulation. A balance between sustainability, frugality, and minimalism is the goal for me.

So interesting, I too watch the minimal mum and I’ve de-cluttered my clothes to a very manageable level but my craft stuff? I’m struggling and I feel so guilty that I’m too overwhelmed with it all to the point I just want it gone. I know that when I have more time I will go back to some of them but I don’t want the inventory at this present time, I need to get it down to a manageable level or maybe I need to get it gone but the guilt is in how much it cost me 😬plus I never know when the mood will take me to make something 🤷‍♀️ Edit: Peace over Possessions, that made me think. I’m stuck, worrying about what I have, what I need to do with it. Having listened to your podcast I think for this current season and in order to be able to move on, I need to move 80% of my crafting stuff out. I will keep the tools for sewing and jewellery making as they would be expensive to replace but the macrame cord, material, beads etc can mostly go. There’s a couple of items that I want to sew so I will keep enough for that but with the proviso that if I haven’t made them in six months.. I move it on. Thank you for helping me to make a plan to move forward with this, you wouldn’t believe how long this has kept me stuck doing virtually nothing, it’s been at least 15 months.

All depends what kind of stuff your talking about… with electricity so many kitchen appliances that works with only electricity… Think about when one day we will not be having electricity… BUT WE will have to make some flour to make bread …with long storage berries.. well if we have a berry off grid flour grinder …I would be thrilled to be able to make some flour… and that as an example also for other things… ok for some things it’s ok to give away things still ok… but uncluttering is ok only if you are sure once you will get rid of it.. you will not need it the day without electricity… or if you won’t need clothe you put there to make skirts or covers etc etc…
