A hike from the beautiful village of Mürren to the top of the mighty Schilthorn in the Swiss Alps. It started gently, became challenging and ended with a nerve jangling final stage.
For me, a perfect hike needs to include:
- Great scenery (or interesting scenery)
- Some variety
- A little solitude
- A bit of a challenge. It's good to be stretched. Knowing enough to be safe but with a bit of room for adventure.
How about you? What are your key ingredients for your perfect hike?

Amazing video and great hike! This video was recommended to me. Unsuspectingly clicking on it, I immediately got excited and felt happy after seeing the tram station because I didn't expect a video from someone that lives this close to me.^^ I hope your doing great and that you will have fantastic hikes this year.

Great video!! Thank you for showing how the trail looks up at the top towards the summit, that is super helpful. It looked like the trail markers were quite hard to find - is there risk of getting off track easily? I don't have a ton of alpine hiking experience due to my location (new york city) - is this a doable hike for someone in reasonable shape, or is there another summit you'd recommend for those with limited experience? Thanks!!
@GavinMetheringham
@GavinMetheringham 4 ай бұрын
Thanks! It's a pretty OK hike in terms of markers. Swiss paths are generally well marked and the painted red/white on this walk were fine but I'd always recommend having a map or some other way to navigate. On the top part there are makers too and the path is defined enough. Knowing what the top part looks like helps for sure! I wasn't sure if it was doable when I was up there but it wasn't as difficult as I thought. Exposed in parts but OK. I'd feel much more confident doing it a second time! My main consideration was the weather and would have had no hesitation going back the way I'd come up if the weather had turned or the cloud had come down or too much snow was remaining higher up. Its a proper mountain! Its a lot of ascent but if reasonably fit and you allow time to enjoy it I think it would probably be OK, weather permitting. (Having a cable car to come back down changes things so much too!!). In terms of alternatives, the area is full of them. I did Niesen two days later and loved that too. Easier but more ascent I think and a funicular that goes to the top. I did a video on that too. But I did Niesen out of curiosity mainly. There's a great resource here: www.journeyera.com/category/switzerland/ which gives loads of hikes around Interlaken, Murren etc like the Eiger trail. Definitely worth a look and plenty that are a bit easier than Schilthorn but still give amazing scenery so might be a good place to start. Switzerland is stunning so wherever you go you'll love it! Happy hiking.

@@GavinMetheringham Thank you so much for the detailed response :) I think I will try to do this hike and take your advice to definitely turn back if the weather takes a turn for the worse. I am a little worried about the top, but like you said - sometimes things look scarier from a distance, then you see the path lay out in front of you when you get closer. I haven't been to Switzerland before and am very excited. Going to step up my running game a bit to prepare for the uphill climb. Thanks for link, going to check that out!!

Great video, Gavin! This is the best Mürren to Schilthorn video I've come across. We are planning to stay in Gimmelwald in June and this is on our short list of hikes. What time of year did you do the hike, and how much exposure was there? I saw a couple videos with some narrow ridge sections, and I have some height issues.
@GavinMetheringham
@GavinMetheringham 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin. Thanks a lot. I was there at the beginning of August. The path to Rotstockhütte is straightforward, from there to Rote Hard is just steep. The last section is definitely exposed in places. It has hand holds and cables and ultimately is considered a Swiss white-red-white hike (so T2 (mountain hiking) /T3 (challenging mountain hiking)) but not Alpine hiking. Having said that, when it is exposed it is properly exposed and I wouldn't want to do it in windy conditions or with snow on the ground. But that's me. I've not done loads of this kind of walk. From the ladder to the top you'll notice I didn't film much which for me is an indication I was focused on climbing safely. That part felt a bit intense. Biggest factor is the weather. Good weather I think it's OK. Hope that helps a little.

Great video mate. Planning at least the first part of this hike to the hut in September. Does the portion from the hut to the summit ever feel sketchy/scary? Or is it just hard. Trying to see if it’s right for my wife and I.
@GavinMetheringham
@GavinMetheringham 2 ай бұрын
Cheers. So it's the top part that's a bit sketchy but if the weather is ok - no risk of rain and not windy - and you're comfortable on the terrain then I'd say go for it. It looks worse than it is I think because you can't really see from a distance where you actually walk. But the path is visible as you go. I was by myself and that never helps - the doubts creep in!! There wasn't any point I had to scramble. The part from the hut to the ridge is just steep. The only concern would be snow so I would suggest hiking poles if you have them. I was glad I had mine. The only other thing was I was willing to turn around at any point and walk back down. It was such a great hike I didn't feel like I needed to get to the top if the weather did close in. It felt like a grown up hike not to mess around with! I don't have loads of experience and am not especially fit but it was ok. And one of the best bits is you can chill on the top and get a drink and a ride down so taking your time going up is totally doable (as long as you get up there before the last cable car down!) Hope that helps.

I did another walk that was not quite as epic but I loved it. If you Google it the pictures are pretty cool - Mt Niesen. Video also on my channel - my first video actually. More ascent - 1700m rather than 1300m but no sketchy bits, just a lush hike and a cable car down. Could be an option. And it's 2362m high instead of 2970m so snow not an issue in summer. Back up plan maybe although there are great walks all over that area. Hope to get back there this summer.

Total ascent 1406m, descent 148m (me going up and down filming myself accounts for the descent mainly and some ascent). @@GavinMetheringham Going down was pretty scary to he honest. My mom and I got to the top of the mountain at exactly 18:00 but didn't realize that the cable car actually closed at 17:55 (yes, we missed it by 5 minutes 🤦‍♂️). We instantly panicked because were extremely tired from the hike up, and were out of food and water. We climbed up without any hiking equipment, and just regular running shoes. My mouth was extremely dry and I was fully expecting water to be at the top, but the building was closed. After the door to the building wouldn't open and after finding out that the cable car was closed, we wasted no more time and just stared making our way down as fast as we could. By the time we got to the stream by the rocks we were so thirsty that we actually decided to fill our bottles up with the river water. I was scared to drink the water because I didn't think it was clean so I just put it in my mouth, swirled it around a bit and then spit it out, over and over. We kept pushing until we made it to the restaurant, and then we filled our bottles up there with cleaner water. At this point we knew we would make it back to our hostel safely, but that if would still be a long hike. We ended up making it back to our hostel at around 22:30, because it was even further than Murren. What a day
