Hi guys and welcome back to yasminecollects! We have yet another CRT TV themed video. This one is the beloved VCR/CRT TV combo type unit- typically something you see on eBay under "gaming tv". These are a great way to get familiar with analog and enjoy VHS tapes. However there are major annoyances in maintaining the VCR- hence why you'll see these listed with broken vcrs constantly. That's not the case with this one though, it's practically brand new in the box! QVC sold this Memorex MVT2090 model and likely marketed it as something family (and travel) friendly. We'll be testing this CRT extensively including performance- does it work? and comparing it to my other daily driver CRT which is a broksonic. This is also a good opportunity to compare a higher end VCR with something as truly bare bones as this. I use a very low hours Panasonic PV-V4520 VCR daily and you can really see the difference in quality.
Maybe I'll get too curious and open this CRT up to view the VCR build...and remove that automatic head cleaner!

as a new subscriber who just found this channel, I do know that these TV VCR combo units were built by a company called Funai. These tv's where the last of the line in fact Funai was the last company to make VCR's the last one was built in July of 2016, in fact i remember buying one of the last VCRs with a DVD combo i don't remember the year. but i do remember it was less that 19 Dollars brand new.

6:14 That is a car charger unit that typically came with Sony Discman CD players (particularly if they were for use in cars), or to charge car cell phones back in the day, or rechargeable flashlights, and it also came with that Memorex TV/VCR combo unit in order for it to be powered by the cigarette lighter input jack in any car. That way, one could watch a movie while camping or to entertain the kids during road trips and to give them a "healthy" glow as they were absorbing radiation generated by CRT TV's like that. Hahaha! :)

I have a Magnavox crt tv. My mom bought it new in the early 90’s. The TV itself was from October of 1991. She had it in her apartment, and in the first house they she and my dad bought back in March of 1996. (They still live in that house) It was put into storage for a very long time in the attic of the house covered with an old blanket. I was in the attic one day and I found it, I took it out of the attic and plugged it in and the static sound and “snow” appeared. I connected a analog to digital converter. I still use it sometimes, works perfectly. I also bought a Universal Remote, because the original remote was lost a long time ago.

We used that memorix tvvcr combo for 2 van trips to Disney land and later kept in kids room afterwards. It was the best little entertainment unit for the price and size. My mom still has one we gave to her as a mom days gift. We got both at wally world back in earrrrlllyyy 2000s.😅 gr8 viddie yazzy brought back memories

This is a cute little TV. I had a similar one in my bedroom when I was a kid. It a Symphonic TV from the year 2001 and it too had a built in VCR. It was a little bigger than this one though, I believe it was a 13 inch model.

No one should be getting mad at you for anything! Although not gonna lie the occasional stark difference in audio volume might MIGHT get me there now and then 🤣. Your remote doesn’t have a backlight but rather just a simple glow in the dark material charged by light. That unit definitely is LOW hours to virtually NO hours because that glow section would be a gross shiny yellow by now if the remote had had a lot of use. This is a 2 head VCR that were the most durable at the end of the line, you probably don’t need to worry about the head cleaner for a long time. Neat find for 50 bucks. I smell your first Trinitron around the corner…

Now that’s a very fair point, I have this problem where I literally scream at the camera if im excited 😂 you can tell I’ve simmered down in the voiceovers bc those happen a couple days after LMAO. will keep the volume levels in mind. Thanks for explaining the remote situation, I really think it’s the worst remote I’ve used. That video will surely come, and I will definitely be screaming 😂😂😂

Nice looking CRT, picked up a very good one indeed. The whistling or high frequency sound is nothing to be alarmed about, it’s the high voltage anode going into the fly back transformer, it’s common with these oldest CRT’s. how ever the expensive ones have suppressors and regulators which reflect the price. The auto head cleaning mechanism doesn’t necessarily clear the tape oxide however it is a catchment device and regular service can keep it clear. The brightness indicates low hours of use. I serviced CRT’s and electronics for almost 38 years so this should last you many years on moderate to average use. A gold find indeed, happy retro venturing 📺

36:15 The reason there is a stark difference in image quality when you hit pause, fast-forward, or rewind, is because your Panasonic VCR has 4 heads while your Memorex VCR has only 2 heads most likely. As a budget brand, Memorex is akin to Citizen, Emerson, etc. while Panasonic is a better quality brand (with Quasar being an offshoot of Panasonic, so also good quality, not to mention Technics which is also part of the Matsushita family) akin to Sony, Yamaha, JVC, etc. and my favourite VCR brands overall in terms of reliability are either Panasonic or JVC with JVC having been the inventor of VHS in the first place. :)

Fun fact, I believe the Broksonic and the Memorex were both manufactured by Orion, they were like Funai in the early 2000's making electronics under big names. The way I noticed is the Broksonic and the Memorex both have the same TV On Screen Display menu. The Memorex VCR menu is also similar to my 2004 Toshiba DVD/VCR combo that was made by Orion. And yes that TV does have a Auto Head Cleaner, although it's probably a soft piece of white styrofoam, and not a squishy yellow piece of foam like your Magnavox (Funai made unit), so hopefully it will give you less trouble. I so badly want to info dump my knowledge about the units but I'm holding myself back. 😁😂

This is a cool video I love your new CRT TV you got off of Facebook marketplace, my 2000 RCA CRT built-in VCR combo player is still working great! I haven’t used it much, but I love the CRTs, though. They’re much better than the flatscreen TVs and they last longer too! Originally when I got my RCA, I opened up the inside of it and it was very clean, but I cleaned it and polished it. I also blew it out with my air compressor too. 😃📺

23:03 Mass-produced tapes have that sometimes. I have a copy of Disney's Sing-Along Songs: The Bare Necessities from 1997 that has 90 minutes of film on it whereas the program itself is only 30 minutes long. That's what we call a "recycled copy" where a tape like that could possibly be recycled from another tape. Disney's not the only video company that does this. I owned a lot of pre-recorded SpongeBob and other Nickelodeon tapes that had nearly two hours of film on it, those tapes being from Paramount. Your Cat In The Hat tape looked like it was recorded on a nearly 50-minute tape (I got a good freeze-frame of it BTW LOL) so that's another good example! What I kinda like to do on the static parts of recycled tapes is to record videogame footage on it ROFL🤣🤣🤣 Nice TV BTW, I kinda want one myself! As several people mentioned, this VCR is made by Orion which is a bit better than Funai, although I've never owned an Orion-made VCR so i wouldn't be able to tell you my experience with them. There are plenty of Canadian-exclusive VCRs that I've seen online that have an Orion mechanism so maybe I'll get one of them down the line!😉👌

Most TV/VCR combos were made by Funai, and the VCRs always die on them. Memorex stuff is usually made by Orion, and is much better quality, so not too surprising that this one still works :)

The crappy things about the TV/VCR combos are that most of them (well, the VCR parts) are not hi-fi stereo, and that they're more difficult to repair than if they had been stand-alone units. But at the same time, I had thought, in the '90s, it would have been the greatest thing to have if I was on a long distance trip in a bus.

hey so the sound could be the sound of arcing, in a dark room if you see what looks like a purple glow somewhere in the tv inside around the top. (along the anode cap down to the flyback). If its not, awesome. New tv!

The remote likely doesn't have a backlight. The middle section looks to be glow in the dark material. Also you have a rabbit ears antenna that mounts to the top of the tv and a 12v plug to plug it into your car. I am sure this is all in the manual. Manuals were better back then.

I´ve got 2 or 3 but none of these this new. Mine are early 90s. Most of therm here were made by Philips and they are SUPER prone to malfunctions and nightmare to fix. Sony sets are very rare here.
