The Portia Spider, a truly astonishing arachnid. The Portia Spider is smaller than the St Andrews Cross spider, but the size isn’t everything. The Portia spider can alter its predatory strategy, employing trial-and-error testing. It will purposefully take indirect routes to its prey. These behaviors suggest problem-solving intelligence. When the St Andrews Cross senses the proximity of a predator, it starts trampolining to discourage an attack. But the Portia Spider, as well as extraordinary eyesight and high intelligence, has an extra weapon - a lightning-fast, super-accurate jump.

0:55 -1:02 So what you're saying is Portia the Jumping Spider has the Big Brain power and the Saint Andrews Cross is smooth brained. Imagine you're chilling in your house, and you see a small person with a poisoned knife ready to strike. You throw stuff and shake violently in fear and try to get away, but they have out-smarted you in every aspect; you get caught defeated by one of the smartest prodigies of your genus. The battle was lost before it even started...

Phenomenal book. I just started the 3rd in the series that just came out not long ago, very excited. I love sci-fi but was never a fan of uplift stories. Usually dolphins or apes or whatever... basically talking animals... unless they're aliens, that's too close to fantasy for me. But the author of the Children of Time series... wow the world they create. You don't just understand what the uplifted animals say, you evolve WITH them to a point of understanding and empathy you couldn't have imagined. How they talk, act, their technology, thought process, feelings, how they have used other creatures for their benefit like we do with farm animals... Wildy creative

Also the book Exopraxia by Peter Watts has the main charecter name an alien life-form Portia because it exhibits extreme problem solving abilities and adaptations despite having 0 concoiusness. Both books in that serise are amazing and make you think of non-concious intelligences and the value of them.

Eyes, jumping spiders (Salticidae) have two pairs of eyes facing forward and two more pairs of smaller eyes further back that can detect movement around them to protect them from predators.
@Sk1tz092
@Sk1tz092 2 жыл бұрын
They have 8 eyes. Three pairs of eyes positioned along the sides of the cephalothorax (called the secondary eyes) have a combined field-of-view of almost 360° and serve primarily as movement detectors. A pair of forward-facing anterior median eyes (called the principal eyes) are adapted for colour vision and high spatial acuity

Pretty sure it is named after Portia from 'the Merchant of Venice' - the Shakespeare heroine who disguised herself as a man to act as a lawyer - because portia spiders can also twang the webs of their victims in a way that imitates prey to lure them closer.

I think you are confusing highly refined behaviors for actual thinking. Most insects don't have enough neurons to make concious thought possible, and having a non-concious being have planning ability takes a lot of evolutionary tweeking. Most scientists can't even really explain how portia possesses enough neurons for both their complex jumping algorthams and the planning processes. Most jumping spiders plan 1 jump ahead but portia can plan up to 3 which is a lot of brain space to be taking up in such a small package.
