The James Webb Space Telescope focused on Jupiter's moon Europa and found something truly remarkable. It discovered carbon dioxide in a very specific place on the surface of the moon, hinting that something intriguing is happening inside it.
Decades of exploration of the solar system have shown that Jupiter's moon, Europa, is one of the most promising places where we can find life beyond Earth. That's because of the vast ocean the moon hides beneath its icy crust. The first evidence of the subsurface ocean came when NASA's Voyager spacecraft flew past Jupiter about half a century ago. The data from the spacecraft revealed that Europa was not just icy but had a young, frequently rejuvenated outer surface.
Further missions to study Jupiter and its moons suggested that Europa's underground ocean of liquid water contains twice the volume of all of Earth's oceans combined. However, what truly piques our interest in this moon is the possibility that it may have hosted life within its mysterious, dark waters, where organic molecules and potential energy sources might exist.
And now, the most powerful space telescope ever built has delivered its first significant results concerning the Jovian moon. So, how did Webb discover carbon dioxide on the surface of Europa? How are astronomers so sure that it came from beneath the surface of the moon? Finally, and most importantly, why is the discovery of carbon dioxide on the surface of Europa so important?
The 75th episode of the Sunday Discovery Series answers all these questions in detail.

@@IapetusStagyeah it’s kinda more of an “or not” scenario. What about if in 5 more decades the same holds true? We can’t know until that time has past, then it’s just hindsight

Juice will mostly fly past the moons Ganymede and Callisto and will orbit Ganymede. It will fly past Europe only twice. Europa Clipper is a mission designed especially to study Europa and will fly past the moon at least 44 times and probably more than that.

Or it could just be volcanic...There is no question that very large volcanic eruptions can inject significant amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens vented approximately 10 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere in only 9 hours.

typically grandiose choice of title "potential sign of life"-- bullish.... CO2 is not even a very strong biosignature on its own. It's obviously true that Europa may harbour life etc but to bill this one spectral finding as potential sign of life-- ludicrous

ok, Ice 10km thick. Ocean 100km deep .. The deepest place on earth is at the bottom of the mariane trench and is 11km deep. It need a serious load of robotic engineering to reach and collect data. Now let's just reach the bottom of vostok lake under 3km of antartica ice, with a remote control robotic device and once this is done, let's start dreaming.

NASA has been unable to send man back to moon since 1970s they dont have started working on any Misson to land man on mars till now mankind has been unable to dig hole and reach to mantle of the earth till now and you are talking about Europa and its deep ocean flyby mission is easy for any agency, send a robotic mission and land it on Europa and make it capable to dig into ice sheet 20 km deep so that it can reach to this so called ocean. Then we will see whether there is life or not😂
