This is a video of my beloved late master Zhang Zhen Hwa of Shanghai , an inner circle student of Mater Fu Zhong Wen (one of Master Yang Cheng Fu's top disciple), selflessly sharing the internal knowledge of Yang Style Tai Chi Push Hands with 2 Soul Tai Chi & Bagua practitioners (the first African American gentleman is Sifu Rudy Curry jr of Queens, NY, a renowned teacher of various Chinese Martial Arts) who truthfully demonstrates the nature of inner peace, and at the same time, tearing down the barrier of culter and race! Master Zhang at the time was in his late 70s and weighed a mere 110 lbs; this video was filmed in Kissena Park, Fresh Meadows, NY, Where Mr. Zhang would teach Tai Chi and push hands every morning, regardless of weather conditions, except for days of heavy rain, all the way through his late 80s! In spite of his age of the time, the skill set he had demonstrated in the art of Yang Tai Chi was inspirational!
I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to late uncle Ernie (The gentleman who was standing in the background, wearing a white jacket & white cap), he was master Zhang's most loyal student and one of the most honorable man I have ever known! He was always there to support master's teachings, all the way to the very end. I would never forget Master Zhang's heart breaking reaction at the time of loosing him, and the pain never faded away for my master. Please R.I.P. uncle Ernie!
God this video brings back so much memories of training with master Zhang at Kissena Park, being Master Zhang's ending disciple, I'm humbled, honored and grateful at the same time! I pray for the courage to carry on the torch!
I hope the friends of Tai Chi will enjoy this video and wish you all the best!

If you know Taiji then you know this is a genuine master. Very rare. The student is skilled and the responses in his body, the whiplash movements of his head in response to masters Jin is powerful evidence of internal power application. An gem of a video. Thank You.

I did thai chi when i was younger and the one thing i remember more than anything else was being incredibly healthy. Literally without any injury and illness for two years. My teacher moved back to china and i just stopped. Everything came back, all the normal sickness and injury that i had before i started learning. It is a beautiful art with amazing benefits that i will never truly understand . But it really works.

A lot of the early students in my Tai Chi class came out of competition Judo. They felt that Tai Chi enhanced their Judo fighting skill. This was in the 1970's. In the 1990'sone Olympic level Judo player found a Tai Chi master in Vancouver that he could not throw. So he stayed and studied Tai Chi for a few years. The first master Raymond Chung learned from Yang Cheng Fu's oldest son who was a fighter.

I'd like to know the parameters or conditions of "not being able to throw". In full free randori ,a tai chi master would be thrown dozens of times be it Judo or Olympic wrestling. The claim that an Olympic Judo competitor could not throw a Tai Chi master is just absolutely silly unless the Judoka was being very respectful as many are, or it was just soft training, or it was some type of drill. I played Judo in the 1990s so I would probably know of the Judoka. Over the decades I heard the claim for many styles of Kung Fu, etc. where a combat athlete could not do something or another to some skinny master. In every case, it was just a drill, or just great respect, or just false.

@@patrickcollins1855 Recall reading of a group of martial artists that did standing meditation and went around demonstrating their skill to others. Not sure that is true, but in a database of studies, there was one where people that practiced qigong/taichi were better prepared for high altitude than the group jumping rope, jogging, etc. Wood you recommend any teacher sharing online for learning standing meditation? P.s. If you like reggae or country music, well, perhaps: Still is Still Moving - Toots & the Maytals with Willie Nelson

@-Cale Well, the whole point of internal martial arts is to keep the practitioner healthy. The fighting part is just a bonus. I personally believe Wing Chun was meant to be an internal art. Two women created Wing Chun. The art was named after the first student by her master. Wing Chun taught her husband the art, and then he taught other men. That's where knowledge got lost in translation. Anyway, I read that external exercise may harm internal exercise gains. PS there standing meditation teachers all over KZfaq. Watch several because everyone has slight versions. Yet, the main thing is to keep your tongue connected to the roof of your mouth while standing. It's like connecting a battery to the positive post. Your feet on the ground are connecting the negative post. You don't have to stand in front of a tree. Yet, the energy from a tree can help one's progress.

@@patrickcollins1855 Thank you for an interesting and helpful response, which is appreciated. Once, as a child, earth and sky began to meet through my body during a storm, and I knew that lightning was forming. When I moved, the charge followed and then shifted to a transformer. The lightning blew it apart, 20 feet, perhaps, from me. The knowledge you shared about the role of the tongue is just what I needed, I think. Thank you for encouraging and inspiring practice. P.s. Although I do not practice Wing Chun, I am very happy to know that we may thank women for one more thing.

Like 'Sticking Hands', 'Pushing Hands' is a Tai Chi and Shaolin training method. Whilst it is useful in martial arts training and certain martial applications, it should in no way be considered a martial defence style in and of itself. A half decent fighter or a natural athlete would kick your butt if you brought only this to the table.
