Koreans all know that people in the U.S. laughed at Hyundai Motor. Well, that's true. Because Koreans think the same way. But it's different these days. Korean KZfaqr, who drove Elantra N in Korea, cried and said this. I'm so grateful and proud of Hyundai Motor's development. The car you are looking at is the growth of the Korean automobile industry itself. Please enjoy it!

not sure about the GR yaris as far as right now. The tuners are already having issues with power and break balancing as well as blowing through diffs and trans. I mean out of the box its pretty awesome but given people changing the settings or trying to change ride angle/torque angle theyre still playing by ear with TRD with how to update the GR yaris to be able to be tuned and ran/adjusted easily for different tracks/driving styles. IDK how well this translates to how long the car will last if driven hard by its owners. If toyota cant narrow these QC aspects down as it is in japan with the local scene you could imagine the aspects to how long this car/platform will last. VS the gr86 per example which is essentially a 2nd gen frs/ft86. Considering that in their lineage the subaru and lancer evo history has been rich with tails of mishaps and illfated builds/end users.

Just picked up my Elantra N this week. It's quite a car for the money. I'm still in the break in period so I haven't wrung her out yet (and it's killing me) but so far I'm not disappointed. What surprises me is that with all the money Hyundai has sunk into racing how few people know about the "N" program. Even at the Hyundai dealers nobody, knows who Bryan Herta is and how successful Bryan Herta Motorsports is racing Hyundai's in the IMSA TCR class. It seems there's a huge communications gap between Hyundai Racing and Hyundai Marketing. That makes the "N" models sleepers and I'm ok with that.

Good power and performance offered for the price of the elantra 6 spd. The gr yaris price point in the us market is up near the 400z along with the 2022 type r. At that rate i may as well do a bolt on turbo with stock internals on the new GR86. Have to let that car hit the masses first to see the limits on the stock trans/dif and pistons. I mean even though the elantra is FF at least in stock form or with a mild tune the stock 6 speed is good enough. I have fears with the GR yaris and how long the dif/trans will last on those from end user to end user with obvious aspects of intent/abuse in mind.

There is a blend of eye candy, tech, and substance in the Elantra N. I also owned an Omni but the GLHS and have been shopping for something in line with a raw but liveable experience. I do not plan to track it but do autocross. This was a valuable overview but I would have loved to see the footage of you chasing the Elantra in the Kona. I'll probably stick with my 2022 BRZ order but I love what Hyundai is doing.
@anhiirr
@anhiirr 2 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of being able to get a brz or gr86 drive it stock then get a turbo with any necessary internals down the road. Theres a cost efficacy vs the 40k range 400z and 2022 and onward type r. The 2022 definitely got the "noteworthy" upgrades that the car imo NEEDED to be truly appreciated in stock form. Whats nuts to me is that the premium package brz and 86 come with PS4 tires just like the premium package elantra n. Kind of blows my mind that these "optioned" cars come with those tires as "standard" it really sets a high benchmark for grip to the owner the second they get the car off the lot and hit their first on ramp/off ramp and do a fwy run etc or really get into it on a good run or etc. Before they consider running a different tire once it comes time to replace them. The rims are also bigger/wider with these options even if a lesser tire were to be utilized vs the stock/base rims/tires. For me that difference in size pushes me towards the premium/optioned brz/86. Ironically i looked up the 86 the white they offer is pearl effect coated...so it costs MORE than the metallics...kind of ironic as i was kind of looking forward to a "base" white that would cost less than metallics. Most cars these days have "run of the mill" paint finish even if it is name brand. I couldnt expect a black coat to "last" since mine wont be garaged. Ill most likely be wrapping and re-painting mine Which was already the point of emphasis with a "base" white paint being an option XD

@@boygonewhoopdataZZ Add in the really low gas mileage this car gets and you realize its not a huge bargain. 20mpg average is the same as a 480hp mustang GT weighing and 3800lbs ,that is what car and driver got with both cars . Some people are averaging 27-30mpg in the gti . Thats a huge difference with gas being $4.00 a gallon.
@ericmichel3857
@ericmichel3857 2 жыл бұрын
@@Spiritcr1jsher First of all these are rated 22 mpg city and 27 mpg Hwy for the DCT, the Mustang GT is 15 mpg city and 27 mpg Hwy, the GTI is 24 mpg city and 32 mpg Hwy. One random test tells you virtually nothing, there are way to many variables. I own a GTI with a DCT and almost never see even 20 mpg, but I also drive it hard in manual mode all the time, I like to go fast and wind out the motor. To get anywhere near those numbers you have to drive it like your grandma where the engine never goes over 2-3K. I also added a throttle booster because it was so dead otherwise, it can go fairly well, but only if you stomp on the gas, part throttle is tuned for gas mileage. That throttle booster was one of the best modifications for improving the fun factor but definitely hurt fuel economy. My guess is the N models come that way from the factory, just listen to that exhaust, what other manufacturer does that at this price point? These N cars are all about having fun, fuel mileage be dammed! I love it! If you are so worried about fuel mileage they have an EV or hybrid with your name on it. Let's say you drive 10,000 miles a year, if you are in a car that gets 30 mpg you will need 333 gallons of fuel, and at $3.50 a gallon you will spend $1,165 a year on gas, for a car that gets 20 mpg you will need 500 gallons which will cost you $1,750 a year. So for $585 a year, or $48.75 a month, or $10.83 a week, I drive what I want, the way I want. I don't get Starbucks drinks so... You can buy one of these N version Hyundai's for $33-$34K and pay the extra five or six hundred in fuel cost, and still come out a lot cheaper than buying some $50K sports car. A Mustang GT with the track options needed to actually do a 20-30 minute session is going to run around $50K these days, and you are talking about a two door sport car vs four door sedan or hatchback. These are not meant to be the fastest car at the track day, they are fun, affordable, very practical, daily drivers that you can also ring out for 20-30 minutes on a track and have a lot of fun, also on the street as well without losing your license. They cost more and the mileage is not great compared to the econo-versions, but that is the price you pay for having some fun. Trying to compare these with actual sports cars is just absurd. If you don't need the practicality then buy a sports car, why even look at these? What else has four doors, all that room, and can even come close to what these can do on a track in this price range? Brand new, 10 year warranty, under $35K, I can't think of anything, can you? I just notice you said gas is $4 a gallon where you live (it is $3.50 where I live) even so the difference is still only $668 a year, think about that when you are looking at mileage vs cost. Like these people that spend $35K for a Prius because it gets somewhat better gas mileage than some other $15K-$20K econo car. It makes no sense financially or environmentally, but a lot of folks did it anyway, go figure.
@Spiritcr1jsher
@Spiritcr1jsher 2 жыл бұрын
@@ericmichel3857 that 668 a year makes the GTI actually cheaper in the long run as you just proved . I dont care what the window sticker says . Of every one who tests the cars averages 20mpg ( car and driver , motor trend , Edmunds) than it a sign that is what you will get . The GTI in every test does way higher than what the sticker says in the real world . The mustang in every test averages about 18-20mpg . The hyundai company cars are a bit less money but after 4 years gas alone makes up the difference. You drive in manual mode revving the shit out of your car is the reason your MPG is low , do that in the other car and it will be even lower.
@ericmichel3857
@ericmichel3857 2 жыл бұрын
@@Spiritcr1jsher Well no, not really. Like I said I actually own a GTI and barely get 20 MPG with it. This proves either car can produce better or much worse mileage based on conditions and driving style. Case in point from Car and Driver's long term Veloster N article search "Our 2019 Hyundai Veloster N Got Better with Age" "While the N averaged only 24 mpg during its stay-1 mpg less than its EPA combined estimate-it did post 30 mpg on our 75-mph highway test, bettering its EPA highway figure by 2 mpg." So yes even the Veloster N can achieve 30 MPG possibly even better. EPA mileage ratings are determined using consistent controlled testing methods and are therefore the most accurate method of comparison. Yes, it is possible to do better or much worse depending on many variables, all this tells us is that individual results are virtually useless for comparison. Like I said some folks get well over 30 MPG with a GTI whereas I routinely get less than 20 MPG. If you are worried about about fuel economy there are far better options. The GTI is a good car but it is boring as f#ck, throttle response is anemic, the shift linkage and clutch engagement is long and vague, it is an understeering pig, and the exhaust noise is completely uninspiring. Most sport driving enthusiast that buy this car (like me) then spend thousands more to fix all these issues with aftermarket exhaust, suspension components, throttle booster, short throw shifter, shift linkage... With this N line Hyundai has done all of this for us, it is brilliant! Oh and it all comes with a 10 year 100K warranty, so when the warranty on that VW is long over on the VW it is not even halfway over on this car, how much is that worth on a car that is made to be driven hard? So the actual difference in fuel costs is nowhere near the example I gave, and when you factor in all these other things, the value Hyundai brings with these N cars is so far beyond anything VW offers, it is not even close.

IF these 6 speed elantra N's actually sell for the 32k entry they claim ill be shocked to see any with premium options or PS4 tires for 35-37k...if anything the base models will be marked up to 35k and the premium optioned ones will sell for 37...since the type r will be priced "out of reach" to some/most people when they see the base price of an SI or elantra N. Plus you work at a dealership...its not like id feel comfortable taking my type R to just any "shop" especially if its covered under warranty id feel the same with a Hyundai N if not like 50x over for hyundai given the amount of "tuner" shops that specialize in them compared to honda. Then again id probably want to tune the elantra N to make more power or look into if people are running e85 etc and so on. Even though it strikes as a more ideal daily e85 is almost points against the ideal daily direction

What about the plastic water jacket/housing for the thermostat? What about the crank, rods, bearings, etc. forged/not? I can't find much on the manufacturing process. Word is they will all be built in Korea. Did they redo the entire engine? BC the Theta engine had its fair share of bull crap exploding, plastic thermostat housing, no timing chain guide between cam sprockets, DGI without port injection to keep engine clean, electric brake booster pump?, MacPherson strut instead of double wishbone. Despite all this, I am hyped about this car primarily because buying a Type R is essentially luck of the draw and then even still you get whatever color, etc. that the dealer is given by Honda's choice. At least the STI is custom ordered. But, the Elantra N has so much tech that is enthusiasts' focused that it must be really fun. But, is it really fast? Is it reliable and strong like a K20C1? I'd really like to see the inside of the engine guts. How close are the pedals? and what's the height difference between them? Much lower weight with the cheap plastics.

This review gives me a lot more excitement towards the prospect of buying one of these. At first, I was like ohh it's a Hyundai, I should just get the new base model GTI and do coilovers, intake, exhaust, short shifter and tune. But it seems like this platform is just more fun. I was unaware that they've become successful in motorsport. I'm a fan of Biermann's work. I love old BMW. I've been driving a 330Ci for nearly a decade after selling my first car, my grandma's hand me down Toyota Camry, and it's been lovely to own. Unfortunately, I was hit by a drunk driver and that saga is over. Fortunately, I had great personal injury insurance coverage and Allen & Allen is no joke lmao. I think it would be proper of me to buy into Biermann's last works as he is retiring. I plan on absolutely ripping this car through the 10 year powertrain warranty.

Tons of N reviews in last 24hrs and Paul's the most informative for someone who actually plans on taking these cars to the track. I was leaning toward the Elantra, but .2sec isn't enough to offset the extra utility. Alex thinks bigger trunk in the Elantra can compensate, but dropping those rear seat on the hatchback, is game changing. Too bad there isn't a 4-wheel version of N (not N-line) so that Paul can take it back home to Colorado.

Oh c’mon man save the sedans. They’re disappearing 1 by 1 every year. My philosophy is: if it only seats 4-5, it’s gonna be a sedan. How often is that extra utility gonna be needed? Not trying to be rude, it’s just sad seeing the sedans dying off, we’ve already lost almost all the coupes and station wagons.
@psewgobind

@@jaysson1151 Only North America has a fixation for sedan. I've owned 10 cars in my lifetime and averaged over 200k in each. The two hatchbacks were my most endearing. (1998 Civic DX and 1985 CRX). Perhaps it's the hatchback that's making sedans disappear, vs it being jacked up and on 4WD.
@ragweedmakesmesneeze

@@jaysson1151 And honestly, as someone who used to have to rent a lot of cars for me and my family. All of these hatchbacks and SUVs are much harder to pack than a sedan with a trunk. So much so, I had a pretty simple "rule" when it came to renting cars. "As long as it has a trunk." Sure, I guess, if you can fold down rear seats you get more "utility" in an SUV, but cargo space behind the rear seats in most hatchbacks and SUVs is laughably small.
@jaysson1151
@jaysson1151 2 жыл бұрын
@@psewgobind I dunno, the hatchbacks seem to be disappearing with their sedan counterparts. At least the American brands did. Mazda is killing their midsize sedan next year. Although it didn’t come as a hatchback. Like what Marc said, the only time when cargo space is useful in a compact crossover or hatchback is when the back seat is folded down. Otherwise it’s laughably small and useless if you have passengers in the back seat.

If Hyundai made the Elantra a coupe and offered it with a manual option, I would buy it over the Toyota GR86 and the Subaru BRZ. I love small performance cars because of how fun they are to drive and you can actually enjoy them at the limit without going absurd speeds. People sleep on these cars because they are not as fast as say a Mustang, Camaro, or Challenger, but that's not really the point of these cars. When you think about it, these cars have a different way of making you smile from the way they sound to their overall playfulness. Granted I love a V8 hypercar as much as the next guy, but these cars have their place too. I know quite a few wealthy people that buy small performance cars over a Porsche because these cars got so fast, you can't enjoy them unless you go to a track.

As an automotive engineer I have to say, I don't know how a review can be done any better. I sure couldn't. There is a reason why you are such a great race driver. You are a very smart man. As to Hyundai's emergence onto the world class performance scene. Just goes to show what capable people can accomplish. I have lived the disciplines involved. Competitive analysis. Reverse engineering gets a bad rap but how its done. Find the brightest engineers. Analyze the best in class. Benchmark. Create a parametric best computer model. Identify weakness and then execute better than the competition. That is what we are starting to see from Hyundai. Lots of German accents in upper tiers of management. Asians are very talented and know what it takes. They work harder than the rest of the world because of their culture. Well done to Hyundai. Paul, your reviews are as good. Thank you. Apparently they found you which makes sense. Birds of a feather fly together. The Elantra in particular is a compelling car in this segment. Can't imagine where Hyundai is going to be in 5 years. Took Toyota and Lexus quite a while. Hyundai has learned its lessons faster.
